Convoy C8 Super Zoom El-Cheapo Mod!

Here it is, took 5 minutes, really proud of it

One of the ugliest beam I have seen

Measured a few lights to compare with with my new lux meter HS1010A.
This one went: Convoy C8 XM-L2 Dedomed ZE 8m#3580 1m¤159400

Don´t know hove correct it is, take it for what it is.

All the text is dissoriented, don´t know why.

Time for a walk to try it out!

Edit: Replaced the dissoriented text with a pic!

What kind of lens is that? Very cool!

Find it in my drawer, think it belongs to a headlight of an Opel Calibra from the nineties, not shure. It can be from some projector to.
Took a long walk in the moon light, very nice throw
Does some one know how to calculate the throw to ansi 0.25Lux?

Edit: Find the calculations.
8x8m=64 64x3580=229120 229120x4=916480 and square root =957m 0.25Lux Ansi.
or 1x1= 1x159400=159400 159400x4=637600 and square root=798m
The safest way was to take the longest distance measurement with a thrower it sayes wich is 8m in my case.
Correct me if I´m wrong!

How did you get your lux measurements?

hey Zanders…I really like this… it’s so different!
And didn’t cost an arm and a leg

Beam is fairly focused. That looks like a very fun mod.

Nice! Looks like you left the reflector in there. Take it out to get rid of that awful “spill” and it’ll look even more impressive.

Haha, it was just an quick experiment for the night walk, as usual. Never thought it will throw that far and get so much Lux out of it. It´s like put your glasses on when you think you seen something 800m away and put the lens back in the pocket when done. Much nicer beam stock for walking. I have ordered a real zoomie just in case I like it.

Thanks for the tip! It will be tonights project, there goes my dual purpose light :-). Must dubbel check so the led board really seated with the screws and not only pulled down by the reflector. Sometimes they only catch the edges of the pill, to much amps now.

Nice  speaking of zoomies….

My Jax Z1 was (very kindly) modded for me by another BLF’er. It’s using a de-domed xpg-2 emitter and I’m getting between 192-195 kCd depending on the battery used. I didn’t ask for the full boost because of (perceived) heat issues.
It is by far my favourite flashlight right now, and this is considering that I’ve never really liked zoomies in the past.
(That’s a pic of my “Z1yh” next to its thrower-cousin, the Supbeam K40)

Yes, it was not so serious. The focus must be adjusted slightly in different distance, just a touch 1mm or so and it got razor sharp. When I took the reflector of there is no spill at all. I think I lost some Lux, not sure. Will measure more to night.

Nice lights! I have one C8 with XP-G2 but have no good luck with it as you can see in the tabell. Have one more on order to come, will try that one out later. If calculated at 8m this cheapo mod gets 229120Lux with XM-L2, not bad if its right. Maybe get more if I manage to get the XP-G2 to work. The only problem is that you soon need a monocular to see how far it throws
That Jax looks really nice, will take 26650.

Edit: It should be Candela I think, 8x8=64x3580=229kCd.
candela = lux × square meters. Learning something new every day

Yes the Jax is really nice and well-made.
Btw, I also have a modded Convoy C8 as well, again using an de-domed XPG-2. It was modded by the same BLF’er who supercharged my Jax Z1. I’m getting around 103-105 kcd at 30 secs.

Do you use your C8 throwers with the with the stock lense or a zoom lense? If you use a zoom linse - which one?

Nice numbers you got there. Hope my new XP-G2 be close to that. Took a walk to test the new beam without reflector, nice and clean shot. Moister and snow on the ground make it hard without being blinded. Will try it out again when the snow is gone with monocular to see how bright it is 1km away . Nice experience thou, learned a lot. Back to basic

You probably did if the lens is perfectly flat on the back side. Some of the reflected light that doesn’t make it thru the lens gets reflected back to the emitter.

Measured it 3 times after and got two lower readings and one slightly higher, so it,s not changed much. I will try the Lux meter at a few hundred meters some night to see if the theory is right. Unfortunately it starts at 1Lux (400-500m). Read some where that 0.25Lux is an average of the hole moon phase so it´s not much light at all.

Today I dedomed a XP-E and tested it in a C8. Got the same problem with this as with the XP-G2. When the current goes up the led change color to the more blueish and there is a drop in Lux. The XP-G2 there was a limit somewhere around 4A, this XP-E can´t handle 3.5A with prot. Panasonic but handles AW 2200mAh fine and get 2.5A in tail. Wish I have a bigger power source in wall, just 2A.
Had this effect with some XM-Ls to but short after the blueish they went if you don´t turned it off, but this small ones just keep running with much lesser lux readings. Just have to find their sweet spot in amps.
Anyway, just measured the XP-E with 2.5A and El-Cheapo lens at 8m. 4010x64= 256.6kCd not bad. The beam spot box on the wall is 12x12cm with 8m distance, very narrow beam now. Time for a night walk.

Edit: Ridiculous, the beam is almost like a laser beam now
