So, you just JB weld the head onto the Maglite D body and adjust your heatsink to focus and you get a very tiny hotspot with MTG2 and 104.5K lux and still an absolutely perfect beam and hotspot.
see my build video: Note in video I say 3.5A at tailcap but I get 5.14A at tailcap.
Also my Lux readings for DX 52mm SMO at 40K lux was with Dome on & 35K lux factory Incan Mag reflector was 35K lux with dome on.
Yes, that reflector is very good for the MT-G2 and should be tested on the XHP50/70 as well. I just never liked the quality of the HF head, but it is about the best you can find for a few bucks, considering the very expensive alternatives.
I did try the DX reflector above but did not have much success. It still has the shadow. I feel that the longer reflectors may have better luck tuning the shadow out. Dont let me stop anyone though.
Here is some interesting piece of data regarding lux. BTW: I have 2 identical MTG2 builds with same bin LED’s, wires, exact same heatsink and design of it and UCL lens. Even get exact 5.14A at tailcap off 2 IMR 26650 cells. All my MTG2 Mag builds generate at least 40Watts of power.
72-73mm SMO DX reflector with MTG2 Dome ON….I get 105.5K lux
72-73mm SMO DX reflector with MTG2 Dome OFF….I get 104K lux
Yes, to my naked eye the DOME ON does seem significantly brighter.
Than I have the KAI Maglite SMO reflector. With Dedomed MTG2 same 5.14A I get 55K lux, but when I stick the factory Incandescent SMO Reflector despite the dimensions being equal it only does 40K lux. http://www.kaidomain.com/product/details.S004024
Unfortunately; my current heatsinks are too tall to focus an MTG2 with a factory Maglite LED reflector but I know it should do at least 50~70K lux.
Most shocking of all is my 1C Maglite with stock LED deep Mag SMO reflector. I has an XPE2 highest bin available in DD off 18650 cell does 2.2A at tailcap…. This little guy does 92K lux and is almost funny to use cause its such a pencil beam light makes it seem almost useless but fun as heck.
One thing to keep in mind is that my Factory Incan SMO reflector, KAI 52mm SMO reflector, and this jumbo 73mm SMO reflector all focus to perfection with Dome off/Dedomed. Normal dome on MTG2 has a slight imperfection in center, but nothing you would ever notice outdoors, but might bother whitewall hunters.
Dome off significantly and negatively affects the lumens. So, much that you will notice it.
