Yeah something like that could work  i will be rummaging through the spare plumbing parts boxes later for a possible match.

I use 1/2 inch copper pipe, and sometimes bend smaller pipe to solder inside to make it closer to solid, or solder discs to the end. For the SS-5039s I have a piece of pipe I straightened and filed to fit, and I cut pills off the end. That is easier than filing after cutting to length. It also works to cut a slot in the pipe and bend it to size, as the slot does not interfere much with heat transfer.
For lower power, it is enough to file a thick star to a close fit in the head.

I have filed pills from # 3 three mode zoomies to fit AA size heads, without taking the LED and driver out.
I may use a pill from a Black Cat.

XTAR WK50, I’ve been winning auctions on these from xtarshop on ebay for $8-10. Great 4-mode driver, no disco, handles 14500’s, op reflector, pop a Nichia in it… perfect.

wk50 has decently spaced modes BUT they have bad PWM

Not on eBay, but AA twistie for $3.5. Used to be $4.8 at FT

Mentioned earlier in this thread; still $2.99 @ ebay:

Still a great twisty single-AA mod host too. 8)

Just under the bar at $4.99 + 2.99 s/h = $7.98. Says it ships from U.S.

Gazillion lumens and includes Ultrafire 18650 with single cell igniter.

Who knows, I don’t even understand counterfeiting a cheap component but they clone everything. Maybe its just a super low bin and/or maybe a reject from Cree.

I got my Windyfire 10A 14500 + the 2-AA hosts.

The Windyfire fit fine, but not any of my NiMH batterys fit :frowning: not even close.

I actually tested 2 Windyfire in it………it got VERY bright for 15 second but then it went dim  i was going to mod it anyway
For an maybe 1W LED or less i was surprised it did light up at all & it actually looked great :open_mouth: before it burnt out. I remember i had time to think if it keeps working i may leave one stock  before it went poof.

To bad i haven’t received the XHP50  to fix it up yet.

Duracell NIMH (Japanese Eneloops ?)did fit my torch,it was tight.I replaced the led with XML2 and new reflector.I also soldered new boost driver to the aluminum pill. The light output is nice, but this torch is quite heavy with some heatsinking,so it feels like a good host for more output.

Good luck with the XHP50 project !

Nice build  Which reflector & boost driver did you use?

I would like to find as many reflector options as i can, because the XHP’s can have a little ugly beams if you get unlucky with the reflector.

5-Mode 800mA From FT (SKU: 1127407).The reflector is a leftover from Convoy s2+ project. It’s only 21mm wide (12mm dep) ,fits Ok against the lens.Very nice flood but the reflector opening still blocks some light and the beam is almost square.

Ok thanks  good to know.

Won one of these 2AA's for $1.33 just to see what it is. Expecting it to be junk.

Received it. Yep, it's junk. All plastic. The twist zoom feature isn't bad, but the light is dim and slightly purple with no heat sink potential.

Thanks for checking it.

Did you or anyone post pics of the teardown or anything like that?

Thanks

I am in need of something cheap to sit and stare at for a few minutes test out and maybe giveaway to friend or two. How bout something $10 and under? Something that hasn’t already been listed.

This is an interesting light, for $3.99:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201252959846

"UltraFire" - sure, if you say so.

Side clicky, Single AA, three-mode High/Low/Strobe driver with memory, available in 9 colors.

Has a proper hollow aluminum thread-in pill that takes a 16mm PCB and a smaller (15mm? I didn't have my caliper handy to measure) driver.

Plastic reflector/lens is largish for the light size, so possibly some throw potential. Lens and SMO reflector are pressed in via the front, so not much room for modification there. My sample had some scratches on the ring, and a smudge on the reflector. The opening on the reflector sits perfectly on the ring of an XR-E emitter, so possibly a good mod host for your old XR-Es left over from other lights.

Factory emitter is one of the cheap "plastic dome over a yellow glob" type emitter. Mounted on a 16mm PCB, so it's easy enough to remove/replace.
