Cracked button cover on Sunwayman D40A

Did they ask you to pay $8 for “freight” ?

What email address for Sunwayman finally worked for you ?

Thanks,
Mike

Can you post what they actually send and pics with the cover off please?

Sorry for not getting back to you guys about this, I only just got around to ordering the covers.

Yes they did, but I did get them to send two covers.

cs@sunwayman.com worked.

Yep:

I’m looking at getting these to replace the metal switches that SWM has used. They’re just about the right size (slightly wider than the originals) but with plastic buttons. That should increase the longevity of the plastic cover a fair bit.

I’ve never been keen on that flexible plastic cover thing on anything (microwaves often use it) since it always cracks eventually.

I have 2 D40A’s and one looks just like yours, the brass switches stick up too far causing an imprint in the plastic cover within a few clicks then a crack soon after.
I ordered not only spare D40A covers but a couple F40A rubber covers, I trimmed the nubbins off the back of the F40A rubber cover and installed it on the offending D40A and no problems so far. I’ll try to get some pics up in the future.

How much do they charge for button covers? i have 4 x D40A and would like to replace the current poor covers with the F40A versions, which email address did you use to request the switches.

Ouch, I too have a D40A and this is bad news for sure. This is weirder still, since another light (in)famous for switch cover problems was a competing 4xAA light, the Nitecore EA4. Of course the shared issue is unrelated to battery setup.

I look forward too to a tutorial on upgrading switch cover with the F40A one.

They really don’t “charge” for the covers, the asked me to pay $8 to cover shipping, I gladly sent $10 because they have great CS.

There seems to be 2 different switch mechanisms used and I have one of each. The one that is problematic has a different rubber boot under the cover, it has holes for the brass buttons to make contact with the cover, the other version has a rubber boot with no holes and no problems.
Depending on how many were made with the problematic boot/cover I think they could make a replacement available and most would pay for it as an accessory.

My unit with the mod-ed F40A cover uses the original screw plate, the F40A uses a screw plate with a center rail and 2 more screws, mine fits fine and the low battery LED can still be seen through the rubber cover albeit much dimmer but I prefer it that way.

Here is a pic, the mod-ed D40A/F40A switch cover bubbles a tiny bit in the center due to the rubber boot underneath and not having the center rail (shown on the F40A) but with no ill affect yet.

Thank you very much for the pictures, do you think the F40A cover bracket would be a replacement fit for the D40A cover bracket,if so i may try and blag afew for mine.

The F40A button should be standard on the D40A by now much better looking and more durable i would hope.

I got a couple F40A cover plates from them and they are thicker and wider, I tried it on my D40A but because of the tight fit the buttons would stick plus you would have 2 empty screw holes and would lose the low battery LED.
The F40A was released after the D40A so perhaps the new switch was the result of issues on the old?

I hate hearing this as I got rid of the EA4 because of the silly button issue. I like the D40A much better than that nitecore. But hell, it'll be a long time before I wear out the D40A's button it appears. Guess just get another IF and when it craters? Ain't gonna worry bout it I guess.

ETA: Too bad Sunwayman doesn't include another switch cover like some factories do with rubber boots in their tail-cap clicky models.

As I stated, they apparently used 2 versions of the switch/boot I have both, one is flawless the other was a problem and rather quickly.
If you have one and it has no issues after some time of use you are golden, I have an alarm panel that used older bubble cover tech and it has held up over 20 years. The covers are made by 3M. The covers are not the issue.
So if your D40A is fine then do not fret, you can always contact SWM CS and get a spare for piece of mind.

There I was preparing my D40A for little walk outside after the sun sets and dang, the cover cracked, I took a closer look and both of the buttons have cracks!

And it hasnt been used that much, perhaps storing it for months helped the plastics to degrade?

Will contact SWM and ask them for replacement F40A switches.

For now I will make do with black “McGyver” tape piece over the whole switch plate, leaving the cracked plastic cover where it is until I get replacement covers.

Just posting on this and my Sunwayman D40A plastic cover cracked too…It only gets turned on and off once daily and mode cycled when batteries are recharged.

Will the F40A cover work? I will contact Sunwayman for a replacement….

They offered to send me F40A cover for free, except shipping costs are on customer, that was about 10$ or so.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but has anyone any idea/source for F40A rubber switch covers?
I kind of “forgot” about SWM customer services offer to send me those covers+soldering tin for broken spring in battery holder and now it seems that they are defunct as a company? At least their page is not loading for me.

Or is there any other workaround to replace that cracked switch cover with something else but F40A?
