There’s so many times I said to myself… OK this is it… this will be the last light I buy, then again there’s always a GB and always a new and better light not too mention new LEDs :weary:

Modify? What would you do to it? Just bump up the amps a bit? (and add $75)

Don’t know if they could run it but it’d sure be neat looking as all get out! (well, ok, I know they could because I have 6 Efest Purple 18350’s running a triple XHP-70 which is, essentially, 12 XM-L’s right? This is the light making 14,455 lumens.)

Edit: See, you’re not a true flashaholic! He would also add his signature for another $50, add some trits, bump the amperage, change optics on the triples and get the price up over $400. SOME people don’t buy a light that cost’s LESS than that…

Dammit you guys, my wife is going to kill me ! I thought I would be able to resist this one. Ordered the dedomed xpg2, thanks for the commentary on the benift/cost of dedoming with this light Djozz and the photos of the backlit button Richard, that was the last straw indeed.

Also I was wondering, will the Panasonic 3400’s be enough to drive this light to its maximum output or do i need to switch to a vaping battery like the sony or efest IMR’s ?

Hank has said that it takes the high discharge cells to get the most out of it. I’d go with an Efest Purple 35A or LG HE-2, something like that. Button top, from the looks of how the cells fit in the tube.

Not sure what it’s worth, but I was just reading today about training camps for terrorists just the other side of the US border in Mexico. It would seem they are looking at knocking out power plants in New Mexico according to the big dawgs investigating that sort of thing. So are these high output lights toys? Or distinct tools for use in extreme circumstances? All I’m saying is the world is a wacky place, hedge your bets and lay in food stock, extra gasoline wouldn’t hurt either. Awareness is worth it’s weight in gold. For those not in the SouthWest US, well, y’all probably already know what I’m saying. Zombie’s rule in politics and our brains have already been eaten. :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha Dale, you and i think alike. The only way I can justify this kind of gear is as tool that will literally be worth its weight in gold one day as long as you have the solar panels to charge it and some spare cells. Can you imagine going back to candles after owning this light…… it was only 15 years ago when my off grid cabin was lit with candles, oil and propane lamps ! Now 35W of led lighting and 300 watts of solar provides all the lighting i ever need for the whole place (flashlights excluded of course).

Has anyone tested the Meteor’s PWM? Does it use PWM? If so, what speed is it?

I couldn't see any visually, but I didn't take it apart and scope it because it was the review sample and I didn't want to inadvertently break it (I've been known to do things like that!). It seems to be constant current, since you can see the tint shift between the modes. That's how most flashlight LED boost drivers work. There is always some level of output ripple in a switch mode supply, but I don't think that the output is being PWM'd directly.

No PWM is nice, but OTOH it also means the rainbow-config tint weirdness will be a lot more noticeable on low modes.

I think I’m 3rd on the list. I plan on doing a video review of the light, and if there’s PWM, my camera will pick it up. I can’t wait to try it out. I’ve got a few big lights like the Sky Ray King (BLF driver), Imalent DDT40, Acebeam K40M, Lumintop PS03, to compare this light to. I plan on doing video beamshots and a lot of size comparisons.

Cameras won’t pick up fast PWM though. For that, it’s necessary to quickly move a thin stiff white object (like a note card) through the beam. I can measure PWM up to about 20 kHz this way, while cameras can usually only see up to a few hundred Hz.

However, cameras can at least capture an image of the moving card. For example, here’s a light with a PWM rate of 488 Hz. Faster PWM looks similar, except the frames are much closer together:

Yeah they don’t pick up super fast PWM, that’s correct… but I’ve found that usually if the camera picks it up I can also see it… I don’t mind PWM if it’s a super high frequency that’s undetectable to my eye, or the camera. I also used to do the fan blade in a dark room, or shower test, and I can usually see it then as well.

Well I ordered the XP-G2 dedomed one from Hank. Next month I’ll probably order the Nichia from Richard. Now this is top secret information I’m sharing with you guys! In fact it is SO SECRET, I’m not even telling my wife. Possession of such ground breaking lights should be kept on the down low. Wouldn’t want this information getting out to just anyone who doesn’t understand this technology. Anyways, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Actually just the other day, I measured a modded out SupFire M6 at 5150 lumens @start, and 69 kcd. This was on fresh Sam 25R's, XM-L2 U3 2A's on 20mm Noctigons using a BLF 20DD by C_K (3.1), UCLp lens. Tail wires fully modded out, heavy wires, etc. This is very similar to RMM's full mod M6. Think I did other multi-emitter with high lumens with similar throw, like the fully modded J18's. K just checked my notes - J18's modded with XM-L2 U2 1A's/copper doing 6.42A at the tail for 2 cells did 6,100 lumens @30 secs and 68 kcd throw. When I got the tail amps at 7.4A, I got 75 kcd throw.

Also I measured a stock COURUI D01 at 680 lumens @30 secs and 67 kcd throw. Of course COURUI's will have a lot of variation piece to piece.

Ohh - also measured a stock Yezl Y3 at 62.5 kcd (pics and #'s in the OP here: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/27258). Again, Y3's will vary significantly unit to unit.

In case it helps, the original Skyray King got about 22.5 kcd and could shine about 300 meters. The XinTD C8 V4 got about 33 kcd or 360 meters. A Blackshadow Terminator gets about 50 kcd or 60 kcd, 450-490m of throw. IIRC a Jacob A60 gets about 70 kcd or 530 meters, but its beam profile is very very different than the Meteor. The Fenix TK75 gets about 92 kcd or 606 meters.

With such a floody beam, 530 meters of throw won’t look quite as impressive as it would with a narrower beam. The bright foreground makes the pupils constrict so that distant objects don’t look as bright as they would with a dedicated thrower.

The Terminator’s beam is probably the most similar to the Meteor, but it uses reflectors instead of optics. Have you ever seen a Carclo 10507 optic in person? It has an unusual beam pattern with a bright central spot, dim spill, and some evenly-spaced artifacts out in the spill which look like the hour markings on a clock. The 10511 has far fewer artifacts but also less throw. The 10508 and 10509 have no artifacts, amazingly smooth beams with no discernable spot, but even lower throw. The Meteor uses the 10507.

Edit: I should mention that the 10507 artifacts aren’t very noticeable during actual use, especially outdoors.
