New: Noctigon Meteor M43 ; in production New color added: Tan

Can anyone give any examples of lights with approx 70kcd in throw? I am trying to imagine what it would look like

Actually just the other day, I measured a modded out SupFire M6 at 5150 lumens @start, and 69 kcd. This was on fresh Sam 25R's, XM-L2 U3 2A's on 20mm Noctigons using a BLF 20DD by C_K (3.1), UCLp lens. Tail wires fully modded out, heavy wires, etc. This is very similar to RMM's full mod M6. Think I did other multi-emitter with high lumens with similar throw, like the fully modded J18's. K just checked my notes - J18's modded with XM-L2 U2 1A's/copper doing 6.42A at the tail for 2 cells did 6,100 lumens @30 secs and 68 kcd throw. When I got the tail amps at 7.4A, I got 75 kcd throw.

Also I measured a stock COURUI D01 at 680 lumens @30 secs and 67 kcd throw. Of course COURUI's will have a lot of variation piece to piece.

Ohh - also measured a stock Yezl Y3 at 62.5 kcd (pics and #'s in the OP here: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/27258). Again, Y3's will vary significantly unit to unit.

In case it helps, the original Skyray King got about 22.5 kcd and could shine about 300 meters. The XinTD C8 V4 got about 33 kcd or 360 meters. A Blackshadow Terminator gets about 50 kcd or 60 kcd, 450-490m of throw. IIRC a Jacob A60 gets about 70 kcd or 530 meters, but its beam profile is very very different than the Meteor. The Fenix TK75 gets about 92 kcd or 606 meters.

With such a floody beam, 530 meters of throw won’t look quite as impressive as it would with a narrower beam. The bright foreground makes the pupils constrict so that distant objects don’t look as bright as they would with a dedicated thrower.

The Terminator’s beam is probably the most similar to the Meteor, but it uses reflectors instead of optics. Have you ever seen a Carclo 10507 optic in person? It has an unusual beam pattern with a bright central spot, dim spill, and some evenly-spaced artifacts out in the spill which look like the hour markings on a clock. The 10511 has far fewer artifacts but also less throw. The 10508 and 10509 have no artifacts, amazingly smooth beams with no discernable spot, but even lower throw. The Meteor uses the 10507.

Edit: I should mention that the 10507 artifacts aren’t very noticeable during actual use, especially outdoors.

thanks for the replies guys! Much appreciated

Ordered the dedomed xpg2. Can’t wait! But will have to sell the niwalker mm15vn though to make wallet space now :frowning:

It's on its way to Texas, so that our favorite stubborn and opinionated Texan can give it a review and torture test.

I was expecting much less, in the 20Kcd range because of the ultra small optics used, the TN36 is rated 22Kcd and many buyers seem to have regrets because they ignored the candela rating concentrating only on lumens as I assume they were expecting 6000lumens to light up the hills at a distance, that sort of interpretation of "wall of light" expression.
So in case you are not looking for a ultra tiny pure flooder and to take advantage of the quick access UI Zebralight style, for like tight wooded spaces you are better of with single LED-large reflector lights. As for 70Kcd, as ToyKeeper says "The bright foreground makes the pupils constrict so that distant objects don’t look as bright as they would with a dedicated thrower."

You meant a Texan.

I wonder what will happen to that test light when it’s done testing on the last list? is it going to be a giveaway? or send it back ?

I`m in for the giveaway! ;)

and K40M does 70k too.

You’re sending it to Justin? I guess I’ll get it when he’s done. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not stubborn and opinionated, I’m persistent and brilliantly educated.

And along these lines, for those that know me, my daughter bought me a T shirt a few years back for my birthday that reads “I DO know it all, I just can’t remember it all at once.”

Edit: It just dawned on me, if I get to torture it shouldn’t I be at the end of the list instead of the beginning? Roll down the windows babe, we got lights to test! ROFLM

Edit II: For those that are squeamish, I will not be throwing this out of any windows or to be honest, torturing it in any other way. Might let Daniel play with it some, 7 yr olds have a way of finding flaws in most anything.

Noooooo! UndecidedFrownCry

I’m really curious how it detects excess humidity inside the light… the docs say it has a special shutdown mode for that.

That special shutdown mode I like to refer to as a “short”

Cant wait for see the mini movie for the M43!!!

I wish the ‘counter’ was working on Hank’s site. I would like to know how many are flying off the shelves.

Well… Hank said he only make 300 … just look how many left on the page

if I’m not mistaken, I thought the number on the page has remained at 265 since the first time I saw it?

I think the Meteor will be a great light for impressing people, in addition to being good for actual use. Little light, big reactions. But as far as reactions go… sometimes things don’t go quite as I hoped. Here are two times things went a bit wrong:

Shortly after I built my Cypreus, I used it to look around a park at night, making sure not to shine it near or toward anyone within visual range. Someone else attending the same event came to ask about it and had some of the usual questions like “What is that?” and “Where can I get one?”

I was feeling pretty anti-social so I explained that they’re not sold like that and I made it from parts, but this didn’t deter them. They wanted to know how much it cost, because they worked with several children who had severe light insensitivity (probably legally blind) and the kids could really use some bright portable lights to see better.

Red flag. Pimped-out Cypreus plus … young children? Bad idea.

I tried to explain that it would be a bad idea because, not only is it bright enough to hurt people, but it’s also a significant fire hazard and I know an adult who hurt themselves with one. Also… small children. Fire. No.

This didn’t deter them either, so I told them how much it cost to make one and suggested they get some SK-68s instead. That worked, but … wow. Responsible for special-needs children and not concerned about giving them dangerous objects? Problem.

A couple days ago I asked my Significant Other if I could buy a Meteor. A “rainbow meteor”, even. She didn’t know what I was talking about, so she asked something like “In the sky? Um. I’m think I’m okay with you naming a meteor… What quadrant is it in?” I told her it was the Noctigon quadrant, and that it was called “M43”.

She was like “… wait, I’m confused. What?” I told her it was like a Skyray King, only much cooler. Then she understood, sighed, and said “… oh. I get it. I don’t understand, but I get it. I mean, I don’t understand why you get so excited about flashlights. I was more excited when I thought it was a rock.”

Let me repeat that. “I was more excited when I thought it was a rock.”

Sigh.
