Looking At The TrustFire SST-50 LED

Benckie,

You've pretty much answered your own questions. The SST Series make better toaster ovens than they do LEDs, unfortunately. I don't have any experience with this torch in particular, but my suspicion would be that it's underwhelming compared to an XM-L based one.

thanks for your replie

it would help to know the bin but i guess that would be impossible to find out, but i didnt email Jim @ Manafont to see if he could find out.

a WJ bin emmiter to me would make the heat worth while not sure if its worth pumping 4 amps into a WG bin emmiter to make 700 otf.

im after some thing to compare to the jetbeam bc40 i realy like thats only 700 oft and seams to be driven hard i just like the look of the trustfire sst 50

ill wait a few weeks i think as some thing else could pop up

sst50 led is outdated and as you said you don't know what bin you'll get -but sticking an xm-l in there would produce a nice thrower (if the driver draws 1.5A from two li-ions)

+1

Look at the big guys, no one is using SST50 anymore. Even Thrunite Cat is using XM-L now and it's better.

Had had three trustfire with sst50 (2x18650 classic ones) all of them were hardly driven@4amp+ None of them were exceeding 650 OTF. Put a xm-l with another driver @3amp and got up to 800 OTF. Doesn't this sound really nice?

SSt50 leds unfortunately seem to be worser even from mc-e/p7.

There is nothing wrong in getting it. My collection does not have a MCE and SST50 and 90. I need to get them are a good price.

For your MC-E, I would recommend a Fenix TK40/30. Great torches for the cash.

I have several SST-50s, all underwhelming compared to the much less expensive XM-L.

I just looked up the specs on the new EZW XM-L, and the U4 bin is amazing !!!

It should produce similar luminous flux (~1250) at 3A that the WJ-binned SST-50 does at 5A !

More efficient means less heat and longer runtimes. Add the smaller die size, and the ability to 'throw' is even better.

In this case, it appears the latest bin XM-L trumps the SST-50 in all arenas.

I think the SST-50 driver would be to much for an Xm-L, 1.5amp at 8.4v, 3 amp at 4.2v since the SST LEDs are rated for 3.6v max 4 amp out put at 3.6v is very possible from the driver not to mention if the driver has any form of boost depending on the Bin of the led even if it produced 650 to 700 otf lumens it would have to be driven dam close to 4 amp. If it produced around 700 oftl I would be happy as I want soming to compare to the jetbeam bc40 that’s sitting on the bench.

I think that the neutral EZW package XM-L, with its higher forward voltage, would be a good candidate for a 3A driver (thermal path permitting.)

The XM-L EZW Is a 4 Die Package, And I don't see how you could ever get 1250 Lumens from it.. Ever..

Looking at the 6V Version, 700mA gets you 340 Lumens from a U4 Bin. At 2000mA, you get about 212% of that number - or about 720 Lumens. By that point, the Flux/Current curve is already flattening out pretty quickly, and by 3000mA, It will probably be flat if not declining due to heat build-up.

The XM-L EZW is essentially nothing like an XM-L. They're VERY different animals.

Good call on the curve. I got a bit too excited about the potential of a high-CRI XM-L.

I guess I'll stick to the new U3 single-die XM-L for torches.

well i did not end up buying the light i brought gears or war 3 for my xbox360 finshed it in about 8 hours or so with a run through on causual mode the game and the trustfire SST-50 where about the same price i think i might of got more use out of the torch but the game was good but to much story line and to many movie sections.

i dont think ill be able to beat the jetbeam BC40 for price quality or throw and spill last night we measured the throw of 7 lights and the jetbeam was second from the top for throw and spill but was number one for quailty.

I must add; while acknowledging XM-L superiority (have about a dozen T6/U2 lights, otherwise defined as "too many") I still have a strange desire to own at least one flashlight each, sporting some of yesterday's super-star emitters. I have a 3-mode MC-E equipped L2i, powered by one of the good Reverend's Panasonics and I nominate this light and its MC-E for the M.I.E.W.T.O. award. (Most Interesting Emitter When Turned Off)

However comparably inefficient the SST emitters are, I plan to own both in the very near future because, just like Mt. Everest, they are there.

i hear what your say foy i already have 5 Xm-l,s T6,s and as i collect more ive had to start giving them away to buy more lolls I've given my old man 3 Xm-l's now, my mum 1 Xm-l and my wife 1 Xm-l I think I've got a Xm-l addiction.

but like you i do have the strange desire to own some SST-50,s either bin or SST-90,s i should of brought the one i linked i bet i would of been happy with it too even if it was around 700 oft lumens, i still might get one yet.

as for your M.I.E.W.T.O. award that has to be the best picture ive seen infact all your pictures are top shelf, i thought the Seoul P7 emiter looked bussy under the dome, but that MC-E emiter looks like 3 baby daddy long leg spiders got glued in under the dome lols

awsome pictures but i hope you guys know what a daddy long leg,s is or thats going to sound stupid, so here is a picture just incase people dont know what im on about.

That daddy long leg pic is awesome. I love macro photography; everyday things look completely different real close.

dontlikespidersandsnakesFoy

i cant take credit for that pic as i pinched it from google, but macro photo are awsome you can see so much more like in that photo above you can see the joints in the legs, i have a couple of of daddies around the house and no matter how hard i look i can not see them, i used to get into photography i had a decent camera and a collection of old school camera,s and a bunch of of lenses but these days i just use a cheap digital.

ifyoudontlikespidersandsnakes you might not like australia

do you guys get these in vegas

these are not our most poisonous spiders but the most common in western australia and in summer they are rampant

Uhhh . . .no, we don't. We do have a lot of black widows, however but damn that spider is awesome. Actually, I want very much to visit Australia. We ship a lot of cars there and I think old Monaros are cool.

GTSmeFoy

No...these are

Funnel web spider.....and yes they rear up like that to strike. The Red back is related to the Black widow

(what an interesting thread hijack)

the old manaro,s are cool i think we stoped sending the new ones over the states but you guys call them gto,s or ponties some thing like that, we have some cool old ford fast backs simular to you guys the none mustang types.

@ Tas62

cool pic and speaking of spiders rearing up one of the best memories as a kid was of one of these a huntsman

my old man who is super freaked out about spiders tryed to squish one but it was to fast for him and reared up like the funnel web pic and started to chase him around, this lasted for a while till the huntsman ran up the wall and hid, then my old man unloaded a can of fly spray on it and then it was back on, the huntsman was trying to get my old man while he was trying to spray it wih poison, till he legged it into the bath room and the huntsman walked off out side towards the shed, i guess you had to be there but it was funny as hell.

the huntsman is a hunter it does not build a web, they super fast, they will get around 16 cm or around 7 inch in size for the greys and ive had pets in the orange type that get a bit bigger, they have massive fangs but are not classed as poisonous but will give a nasty painful bite, they are normaly dosile but will put up a fight and take of things biger then them like dogs ive seen and the mum,s gard there young.

once when i was about 20 i took a girl out to meet the grand parents at the farm and we had a few drinks and where going to burn off a heap of rubbish i picked up a old dead log and draged it over to the fire and 200 odd baby huntsmans about 1 to 1.5 inches in lenght started to run over my body i tore all my clothes off and has running around screaming hitting my self in the head trying to get them off while every one wet there pants laughing.

now lets not get started on 12 foot pluss snakes lols and yeah my thread off track a bit but hey ill be honest its a hell of alot more intresting now then it started out.

@ foy thanks to your pictures i had to buy a solaforce host Tongue out
