New XP-L High Intensity Emitter

It’s really pretty simple, if the bottome of the TIR in the Carclo lens is more than 1mm above the step on the leg, it’ll fit. Otherwise some modification might be necessary. So be it. I have no problem sawing/slicing/melting/drilling/carving on pretty much anything.

So what modifications will we need to do to get it to fit?

  • Maybe use a very sharp exacto knife and saw the edges of the Silicone lens on the LED so that it’s 45 degrees instead of 90 degrees?
  • Maybe file the bottom edges of the optic to widen it slightly. Similar to what we do now for domed XPL, just not so deep into the optic?

Interesting. The fact that CREE actually sent you a picture shows that they’ve thought about it. This isn’t just some off-the-cuff customer service rep giving a clueless a response.

It was Carclo that sent me the render, not CREE.

For what it’s worth here, I simulated these emitters by placing a 1mm sheet of copper over the die and shaving the dome off with a scalpel. 1mm fits under the triple optics. I’ve already assembled 12 of these into the M43 but actually didn’t see the output I expected, probably due to losses by shaving the dome off.

So this will be my second attempt.

But the optics did fit over my shaved emitters.

Edit: I cut a square hole in the sheet of copper that fit over the emitter die.

I've got some on the way, but here is some feedback from someone who has tried them under a Carclo:

So it looks like some small modifications may still be needed. I'm sure that we'll have it figured out in no time though.

WooHoo! Best bad news of the day! Ready bank account for impending reduction!

Care to disclose which tints/bins you ordered?

I have 12 of these in hand as of a few moments ago. Off to the stove top we go!

Not much difference in appearance between these and the ones I cut with a scalpel. I’m not real confident the outcome will be satisfactory, but I will try.

+1 Please share! (Fingers crossed for 1A or 1C)

OUCH! (on more than one front)

I spashed solder into my eye. But of course I didn’t stop there. I got the 12 XP-L H1 in place and it was acting odd. Holding the button down for Turbo it’d ramp up then shut off. The 35A cells are at 4.15V. I tried again. A double click for Hi and it’s really bright. From there I held the button down and it went to Turbo. Stupid bright! How about 7141 lumens on Hi, 11,902.5 on Turbo, with the cells still at 4.15V.

The M43 Meteor, at 11,900 lumens. OUCH!

High level one does 1735.5 lumens. That Turbo is ridiculous!

Edit: Start up does just over 12,000 lumens. I attempted a 30 second run and at 20 seconds it was getting really hot, making 10,381 lumens. Wow. Ok, I’m impressed!

And for the record, these flat little XP-L H1’s fit under the Carclo 10507 perfectly with this 12 emitter set-up.

THIS :exmark:

How is your eye? :~

11900 lumens?

Sounds a bit high considering the M43 w dedomed XPL is 8000 lumens.

What’s the lux at 1 meter?

great job

wait until new LED of cree arrive(more that 200 lumen per watts LEDs) then you can give more upshot and got more impressed!!!!

12000 lumen is ultra brights for flashlights

may you can get more lumen if in future they arrived!!!

Does sound high, but my meter in my light box reads a whopping 35,110! (multiplier is .345) And it lights up a 2 car garage sized playroom like freaking daylight! It’s way over 8000 lumens, trust me on that one. 12 emitters at 1000 lumens each, 3A will do that, but holy cow! 36A? Freaky! Wonder if I dare pull the negative and get an emitter amperage reading with my clamp meter… it’s supposed to be good up to 40A.

Eye hurts. I have a Dental Office shoot tomorrow, Rehearsal Dinner Friday night and a Wedding Saturday. What lovely timing! lol I finished the light before digging the little beads of solder out of my eye though, I mean, a guy just has to have priorities or what is he? :stuck_out_tongue:

I thought M43’s turbo peaks at 2 amps per emitter.

1000 lumens at 2 amps?

Mouser has U5 and U4 bins for the XP-L High Intensity, these are lower brightness bins according to the datasheets, there are U6, V2, V3 bins, which are higher bins.

Dude, Dale. Hardcore.

Wouldn’t be able to do it myself. My eye would come 1st.

Maybe we need a Flashlight building scars and injury thread.

I was having some trouble with the light dropping down from 12,000 lumens to 7900. Could not for the life of me figure out what happened.

Come to find out, one of the 2 screws holding the driver down was loose. I had taken the driver out and put new 18ga wires on it for neatness sake. Somehow I didn’t get both screws tight. Now the ground supply is good and it’s back up to mega lumens, with LG HE-4 cells freshly charged it’s making 12,523.5 lumens. Ahhhh, sweeet!

I don’t understand it, will have to get an amp measurement on the negative lead coming into the board up top.
