"Glow-in-the-dark o ring" what is it and is it useful?

I wonder it has a feature of “Glow-in-the-dark o ring”. what is it and is it useful?

The o-ring that seals the front glass is made of a material that will glow in the dark. If you have the light in a dark room it will be easier to find because the reflector will glow. I find it to be extremely useful.

a glow in the dark button switch will be more beneficial if you left your flashlight bezel down most of the time

GITD is great if you want to find a flashlight but not so good if you want to not be seen/found while in the dark. So if you use your flashlight in tactical situations you may not want GITD.

I like the effect of a GITD o-ring under the reflector, but my logic tells me it is more for effect that for genuine usefulness:

  1. GITD compounds (unless a radioactive isotope), require absorption of light to ‘charge’ and emit a glow.
  2. If it was already bright outside (or there was another separate source of light) enough to charge the o-ring, then you either a) wouldn’t be using the flashlight in the first place, or b) would be able to find the light without needing the small glow.
  3. If it were dark enough outside to justify the use of a flashlight, the flashlight would need to be switched ON to charge the o-ring. Therefore if the flashlight were dropped, it would most likely be switched on and easily recovered without the glow. Unless it was using only a momentary (hold-down) button.
  4. The only time it would require the glow to find the flashlight is if it was dropped whilst switched off (after being on long enough to charge it in the first place). But you wouldn’t switch the flashlight off unless it was no longer needed, in which case there would likely be enough ambient light to find it again anyway.
  5. So in my opinion, the GITD ring only becomes useful in finding the flashlight if you have been holding a momentary button that charges the glow, then switches the flashlight off automatically when it is released or dropped.
  6. Go back to 2

I love the glow, but you are correct. It has limited usefulness, but is mostly for looks and fun.

I disagree with everyone that claims they have limited usefulness. I think it depends on the quality of the glow rings and how you expect to use them. I loved having them on both of my convoy lights which also had glowing switch boots, so either end would glow. I find it particularly useful for keeping the lights beside me at night. Typically I’ll use my light before going to bed so it would be already charged, but if not I’d run it on high for a few seconds and I’d be able to find it all night long.
