AA Deal of the Day

Hey wolfdog1226! We have the Olight M23’s in and I’m shipping yours right now. I’m about to test them to see if they have a thermal or a timed step down for ya.

Thanks,I just got the shipping notice. My guess is it is a “Timed step down” just by the way the Olight rep describes it in the specs.

Could you do this for me?! Olight did not reply to this question in the CPF thread.

DOES TURNING THE LIGHT “OFF” THEN BACK “ON” AGAIN RESET THE 5 MINUTE STEP DOWN?

,THANKS

Pretty strange. In Olight’s description it says it has a 5-8 min step down, but I’ve had 2 pointing at the wall for 25 min (just to see if one would step down first) to the point where they are ever so slightly uncomfortable to pick up (not ridiculously hot but…… hot) and they haven’t stepped down.

Right,a TOTAL of 8 minutes. Steps down in 5 and then after 3 more minutes the output is reduced to 60%. That is how I interpret their statement below from an excerpt of their specs.

Olight info:

“Built in thermal management system that limits the high output of 1020 lm to 5 minutes and then gradually ramps
down the high output by 60% after 3 minutes of constant use.”

I believe here like in other parts of the specs they worded it wrong. Meaning reduced “TO” not “BY 60. If it was reduced “By” 60 it would be lower than Medium[350L]!

Anyway, great to know that they did not get hot after 25 minutes, heat will be a non issue because I am hiking and my hands and the air flow help a lot. M3X/SR52vn both NEVER get hot.

Were yours in front of a fan? Probably not!,sitting on a desk and pointing to the wall?!

So after 25 minutes you did not notice any type of timed step down where the light ramped down that was noticeable from a “Visual Perspective”?

My guess now is that it has thermal management[I definitely prefer that and that’s what they specify] and only STEPS DOWN when the heat reaches an unsafe temp.

Thanks,

The M23 looks sweet, I’d like to know how it performs.

Yeah, it performs nicely for sure! But in answer to your questions, yeah just sitting on my desk casually blinding me slowly even though they were pointed away. And yes, I actually tried this with 6 different flashlights and I never saw a visual difference after at least 15 min with each.

That’s good, looking forward to getting it On Friday.

One reason why the M3X [which I bought from you guys in August of 2013!] is still in my rotation and the only stock light in it until the M23’s arrival, is because it has no step down and never gets hot, plus 1000 lumens and 91Kcd is plenty for my secondary lights!

Excerpt from Selfbuilts review:

On max, the M3X has very high output for the class, with no sign of any sort of step-down.

Appears that because of great heat sinking the M23 will follow suit! 8)

It’s that time of the week! Daily Deals for the next week. Only at www.andrew-amanda.com

I got it @ 2pm EST!

Here is my assessment before I take it outside when it gets dark. None of these are deal breakers, just an honest critique and assessment!

1.Beam Profile- No doubt Vinh Q. Nguyen does a better job and he de domes them completely,I believe this has a protective film on the LED.

Not far outside the hot spot there are about 7 or 8 distorted rings. In real life use[outside] it won’t be that noticeable after about 30’.

2.No doubt they used the same holster as the M22,which is understandable. However, The tail cap for my M22 is noticeably smaller in diameter making the M23 much more difficult to fit through the hole at the top of the holster. It literally took me 6 or 7 seconds to close the flap! With Two hands spreading the opening is much easier! For me that is NOT good because my left arm is occupied by Capo my Siberian Husky! In other words when we are hiking[every night] and I want to get this out of the holster it will be more difficult.

It will get worn in by ripping the opening! The M23 tail cap has the exact same DIAMETER as the M2X tail cap. Only difference is the 3 crenulations of the M23 vs. 4 for the M2X.

3.The “Boot COVER on the tail cap is very mushy once the light is activated,Honestly, never had one this mushy!

4. Spring in head is a GOOD thing,my FT IMR batteries all work in it.

5.Definitely solid and built well like my M22 and other Olights

6. Has a nice tint,similar to my D25Cvn Ti XP-L 5700[Dome on]

7. It definitely has thermal management and steps down. Not noticeable by eye until you turn it off which I did after 10 minutes, then immediately turned back on and THEN I could notice the higher output. Also ,the light was noticeably hotter by touch after 5 minutes than it was after 10 minutes! In addition the Olight 3400 battery started at 4.20V. After 10 minutes it was at 4.04v[3 minutes rest]. If it was 1020 lumens for 10 minutes it would definitely be lower. Not your fault ZANE! Can not notice it unless you did what I did, sense of touch test, Voltage test and turn on/off visual test!

8. I keep adding things! It is 81F/27.222C on my loft. It NEVER got too hold to hold. From start to now @ the 30 minute[10 min. increments] mark. From my experience this is a VERY GOOD thing because in actual use the light always stays cooler than tail standing w/ no fan!

Did you notice that I am a Perfectionist!!

As long as it is durable, reliable and “Throws to specs” I will be happy. I am Field testing it[by myself, no assistant tonight] from ~ 500 yds, just outside the 477yds[436m] specs.

How about a beamshot…pretty please?

Did you try to remove the SS bezel? This did get rid of the rings on my M20SX and M20.

Thanks for sharing your impression!

Sorry………my camera is old[2006] and can only take wall shots!

Yes,I just tried! You can NOT do that w/ this light, the lens will follow[fall out] and also the reflector if I tilted it enough which I did not!!

I have a modded light[ OSTS TN31mb] with the same thing but not as many rings. Michael [OSTS/OMG] told me it was from the light of the LED hitting the small opening at the bottom of the reflector.

It really is NOT an issue when using it outside in real life application.

Last night I used it for the first time.

-VERY nice tint

-Field test from 490 yards and it shed a decent amount of light on a White SHED!!! Olight specs. 47.5Kcd= 436m/477yds.

-My field test of 490yds is 50Kcd and 447m of throw.Looks like it still had a little left.

-Never got hot in 76F/24.444C using it on max for 40 minutes. I turned it off/on again after 6 minutes or so to reset the step down.

-I would recommend getting it.

-Wait for a sale or do the “Deal of the Day” when it is up for that week. OR…“Make me an offer”like I did from Andrew/Amanda.

Chatted with Andrew and ordered the Nitecore EC4 Wednesday morning, they shipped the same day and it’s already here! Using the same cells and with roughly the same performance as my old Fenix TK35, I hadn’t expected the EC4 to be so much more compact. Although it’s still too big for my liking to EDC, it’s perfect to keep in the laptop bag for backup. Price was very good as was the fast shipping and overall quality of the light.
