Old-Lumens Grizzly Lathe---New Chapter, The Saga Continues

I can tell you heads up....Justin struggled with this for days before making his decision. It was not easy for him in any manner. I spoke or e-mailed... or both...with Justin daily during this time. I will leave the specifics to Justin should he decide to provide any. We are all better for what we tried to do and what we gave. Lets let our hearts smile and just enjoy what we did for a good soul. Dan.

Sad to hear that he couldn’t keep it, but glad it went to a good home!

Reason, I don`t need one as one of the donators it was a gift freely given
with no strings attached. My best wishes for O-L

That’s the spirit guys! Many thanks for your kind and supportive comments, I know that’ll do Justin a world of good to read your sentiments.

All the best wishes for OL and DBC

I am Very sad Justin could not keep it, ..but it couldn't go to a better second home (Dale's).

Best wishes to Justin.

Thank you Very Much to Dale for helping out Justin,

George

i am not sure how i feel about that…

i we tried to help and now it seems that we could not help at all.

i hope Justin can bring a bit light into that story so we can imagine what happened.

I wish for old lumens the good .
i hope he come back with the time and we know what is the trouble.

When I was a kid I used to buy “Bazooka Joe” bubble gum. Inside the wrapper was a little comic strip about some kids.
One strip that I always remembered was when one of the kids was all bandaged up and on crutches. One of the other kids asked him what happened and how did you get injured. The injured kid told him I got this helping a little old lady across the street. His friend asked did you get hit by a car? To which he replied, no it’s because she didn’t want to go!

Sometimes when you think you’re helping someone, actually you’re not.

I’m not disappointed or upset or anything, but in all honestly I do feel everything happened way too quickly and the decision of passing the lathe was made too soon. Of course Justin has the right to do what he thinks is best with his gift, but what we did was never about the lathe, it was to support him in the most helpful way possible. The collective intention and action of the hundreds of members is priceless and this might be a bittersweet experience for some.

I can only wish the best to Justin, hope he is OK and look forward to hear from him.

I remember that one!

A gift is a gift. A serious problem had to raise it’s head; giving up a tool is not something any of us would do easily. I wish the best for OL.

I wasn't really ready to say a lot, but I did sort of shortcut it, when I changed the OP in the other thread. Subtle hints some people do read and the OP hint wasn't so subtle, but that's me.

Yes, life is what it is. Yes, the whole lathe thing has pretty much backfired and also brought to light some other things in life, that were probably best off not thinking about or bringing to the surface. Well, now they are on the surface and it is what it is. I decided that I will never make use of the lathe, for several reasons. Some are beyond my control and some are reasons like truly realizing that for me, hand made means hand made and adding a machine to it, is meaningless to me personally. Not gratifying and not meaningful, in a hand made atmosphere.

With all the things that have come about, they have built up to the point where I knew the lathe was leaving and I decided to make sure a member of BLF got it. A member who would make use of it, a member who has done a lot for the forum and is active in it and a member who is well liked here, as well as close to where I live. I believe I picked the best possible member, who is close enough to me, to pick it up.

My choice, my decision, the way it is. Be kind to Dale, it wasn't his fault, LOL. I dumped it in his plate so to speak.

I don't have much else to say. Enough said. I need to chill.

OL, obviously this is a difficult situation for you, but I hope you still feel comfortable here.

I wish you the best in whatever is going on in your life right now.

Hey there Justin, thanks for checking in here! I’m sure you did the right thing given the circumstances, and I know it wasn’t a decision that you took lightly. Thanks for making sure the lathe went to a good home. Take care, and enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Whatever the reason or reasons, I am sure it was not at all in the plans when this whole thing started.

I am fine with Dale or anyone else in the forum getting the lathe and my donation is good for the cause not just for the person. I wish the best of luck to Justin and support his decision . I wish the best of luck to Dale and hope the lathe serves him well as I know once he figures it out there will be works of art in the making with the skills he already has with flashlights.

I really just hope everyone can see that this was all for a good cause, and still is, and just let it go at that and knowing it is still in the forum family and will be used for the members here any way it goes.

Early in the process I had the feeling that we were pushing this onto Old-Lumens, as it is, everything seems to have worked out fine, we will still get to see what we wanted to see, Old-Lumens flashlights, and whatever will come out of another member with a lathe, it all sounds good to me, I’m just glad that it all worked out and that DB Custom was in a position, and close enough geographically to help out.

I am curious about the specifics, but i can understand how these things can be extremely difficult

I hope everything is alright with Justin and his family though, in the end thats the biggest concern.

All the best Justin and Dale.

I hope it cools down in Texas.

Looking forward to Dale’s creations !

YOU’re not the only one hoping for a cold front! I spent the afternoon working in the shop, clearing space for a 4’ long beast of cast iron in 109º heat! No air! (I have a large sliding door facing North that should allow plenty of air to flow, but the windows on the South side, where the wind normally comes from, have been stupidly blocked by my neighbor! He piled round bales of hay in a long continuous row about 2’ away from these windows!! Where did I put that cigarette lighter…) I’m beat! And not finished. And things hurt that ain’t supposed to hurt…

The bench is on the ground, a power supply runs overhead but needs to have a drop added, and the Hot Ill Tempered Grizzly needs to be snatched out of back of the truck. ( I can only assume it is Ill Tempered, as Justin has been teaching it foul language for a month now. I know, I know, when it was in the crate he was talking sexy to it, but all that changed once it ate the cake….)

Seriously though, Justin spent a lot of time and effort working on this, readying it for business, and I very much appreciate all his efforts that have gone into it.

So much to learn, so little time…

So whatcha makin Dale?
