very true. in the front of the photos you can see several cheaper flashlights i modded with wide-angle warm/white LEDs and permanent diffusers to them with hanging lanyards to do much the same purpose.
I do have kerosene and gas lanterns in a different collection. ( photo below are many from Coleman, Bernz-O-Matic, Sears, AFC, KampLite, and one Petromax. many of them are vintage, oldest is 1921.
Looks interesting. it looks a bit better designed than most up-firing LED lanterns, (those with the LED on the bottom facing up and most of them cause a lot of eye glare and emit most of the light in the wrong direction when used outdoors) all of the up-firing lanterns i have i converted over to down-firing. (LED on the top facing down. Less eye glare, and more light when on tables, hanging in trees or a tent)
you might wait for a really cold day to light all the gas and kero lanterns.
they give off lots of heat!
those dollar store tiny desklamps are nice once modded with a upgrade pull led on a star and a prismatic laptop cell.
ad a 4056 board or what i did was gut a pen type ecig charger and put it in the base with the usb cord hanging out.5.1 ohm resistor limits a cree xr-e to about 250ma.
its quite useful now.
