What's the best zoomie at any price?

It’s pretty awful. Flood mode might be ok, but in spot mode, you end up with 3 separate beams. Each beam is offset from center, and they don’t overlap at all.

If you want the beams from all 3 emitters to converge you need a separate lens over each beam.

Jax Z1 is my choice. Have had the uf-1405 and the uf-t20 and neither come close to the quality of the Jax.

does this cofly kx-ao36 still have the ringy artifacts in the beam?
or why is this more desirable than the zeusray to you?

+1 for the Jax. I’ve owned a lot of zoomies and the Z1 is the first one that I really like.

In stock form mine did about 47kCd (at full throw) but I’ve since had it modified and now it’s my favourite light

Based on the mods members did:

UF-1406 - 45mm lens, 235klux@1m, dedomed XP-G2 S2@5A

Jax-Z1 - 38mm lens, 223klux@1m, dedomed XP-G2 R5@5A

Unless I miss something from the mod specs the throw is about the same.

At this time, my choice is the LED Lenser P5.2, either stock for an AA or with a 7135 driver for a 14500. LED Lenser P5.2 It doesn’t throw as far or feel and look as good as an SK-58, but it puts the whole output into the throw.
There are probably bigger Lensers that are just as good, but I don’t like 3 x AAA. The P7.2 has great output with the resistor in the head bridged, but 4 x AAA is no more practical than 3 x AAA. I don’t think the Coast American versions are as good, but I only have the HP1. The POP lite T62 Chinese version that I have has a poorly designed charge port.
Lensers are available on Ebay and from Fasttech and Tmart for under $30. They seem to be as good as the expensive ones that come with a warranty, except that they may have poorer quality control. At this point, I don’t feel that any light with single zone optics competes with them. The Carclo optics usually have a small refracting convex lens zone at the center, but the center is too small to leave enough space for a good sized pillar and the LED to zoom into.

I also find myself gravitating back towards zoomies. The last few weeks I made some further changes to my Aleto N8. Stripped off the Duracoat for the bare metal look, replaced the rubber side switch button with a metal button, swapped out the LED for an ZPL HI 5000K, and swapped the 3.8 amp Nanjg 105c with Mokkadrv for a FET driver with Moppydrv.

Much better. Tint is much improved compared to a dedomed emitter, throw is decent (28k lux with fresnel lens), and flood is quite bright and wide. I also like Moppydrv’s UI and customizable turbo timer.

Think I’ll probably try duracoating this light again though… but this time in tactical black. I want the paint to look flat so it looks more like anodizing and less like paint. Blows away my LED Lenser P5 and M3R in flood and throw while being much smaller. But it gets hot fast.

That Aleto N8 is awesome! It was the example I was thinking of when I said flat Fresnel lenses work well on zoomies. However, I don’t suppose it is available at any price. One really can make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. I guess starting with a fancy light is lazy of me.

In my limited experience Zeusray EDC100 for $7.99 is hard to beat at that price range.

Solid pill, xml2, big zoom area and brightness is all good. My sample also has last mode memory (almost instant), I didn’t expect that after reading some reviews here but I was pleasantly surprised
I like it so much that I ordered another 2 for gift (still in transit) and I hope quality remains the same as my previous order.

I see now that Zeusray EDC120 price is reduced from $9.99 to $7.99. Description says it has copper pill but it looks like brass actually.

plus over $5 shipping. Meh.

The original may still be a really good light.
Or not. They’ve been all over the map with that, screwing with the pill, using cheaper emitters, using a next-mode driver briefly.
They made it a lottery light.

It would be great if they’ve stifled whoever fouled them up and gotten back to making a consistently remarkably good light at a good price.l

I agree I did actually have a little bit of input on the first Zuessray with the xml2 and I still like it the only real limiting factor is the anemic tail switch that limits the current draw but now Iam waiting for a UNIQUE fire
utf1405 and modding potential Iam really pumped up !

Then that 1405 sure looks and performs like a beast!

a good friend is sending it toe and I really excited after reading about it ! Does any one have have a link or beamshots of some modded amped up ones?

How about all the links?

Search box, upper left corner of every page, and remember to change the view from “Relevance” to “Date” if you want new references first:

I am looking now

What do you think of these ?

Also can a modded XR-E Zoom with a glass lens be modded to throw as far as the XR-E Dereelight ?

http://www.ludicrous-lumens.co.uk/index.aspx?pageid=2616501&chainID=273892&txtQuickSearch=XRE+Aspheric

Here are some 37 mm , 50mm, and
67 mm aspherics which look to be well made but I am guessing they are not driven as hard as Dereelight, right ?

Seems like from what some of you say an XR-E driven hard in one of these nice glass aspherics, even a
20 mm should be able to throw 500 meters and still be useful as a light due to the Flood function ?

Anyway- to the OP - I am definitely not an expert but these are good Zoomies on the Ludicrous Lumens Site above IF you like long throw.

I do - but not a hunter.

Yes.Looks like a Lenser . If it could be overdriven or modded to use a 18650 it could be a great little thrower.

Not available now….it says.

what is the best 18650 zoomie now? xml or xpl….

I don’t know about the best zoomie, but when it comes to the best LED I’d take XML off the list of suggestions.
I haven’t tried the XPL in a zoomie yet, but the Nichia 219c is really nice. Such a nice tight solid uniform beam when fully focused. After seeing it I’ll never put an XML in a zoomie again.
