Convoy L2...Guess who's back???

How do you get a 6v 5amp (Max) Buck driver to rock and roll a XHP-70? :~ It just starts to get bright at around 6amps? Then there is the heat to deal with, (heat sinking, potting) so you don’t smoke the driver? Can you get a buck driver to do 7-9amps? Cause I’ve been told different? Wouldn’t you be better off with a 7135 driver, if you want or need regulation? Just asking? On a side note- I would like to see a thicker shelf if running a XHP-70, like 10mm or better? Driver cavity diameter, don’t matter to me, I can make adapters, for anything? So what ever get’s decided I’m good with.

The measurement of the inside (battery tube) end to end is almost exactly 2.75 inches or 69.85mm. This would of course be smashing the springs to non existence so I’d say it’s a no for a 26700.

So, what do you think of this new L2? Do you have some photos and some beamshots?

In short… I love it. It’s excellent even in it’s stock form. I honestly didn’t expect to be very impressed with it until it had been modded with at least more power. Mine is just a pure stock L2 with the default XM-L2 yet I’m very impressed. The throw is ridiculous for a stock light, pretty much matching my heavily modded XinTD C8. I’ve never seen a dome-on emitter throw such a tight defined hotspot. With a few tweaks it has crazy potential. Keep in mind this is not a pocketable light. It’s big and heavy…beautifully heavy. So much aluminum that at 5 minutes on high there is no heat to be felt. I just tested indoors sitting on a table pointing at the ceiling with no additional air circulation. At somewhere between 12 and 15 minutes the body started getting warm and then it quickly spread throughout the entire flashlight body. The huge deep cooling fins just eat heat for breakfast. In a couple weeks a few more of us (particularly those with modding skills) will have these and can offer more valuable input. I know Simon wants to move on to the next version but honestly I think it would be a big mistake to drop this design. You will absolutely NOT regret buying this light. It’s just awesome. I don’t own anything like it. Honestly I think Simon knocked this out of the park. He hesitated on making it because I think he actually lost money on the original L2 and he is a little uncomfortable selling a light at over $40 but when you have it in your hands you see exactly why it costs that and it’s a bargain at that price. The threads are beautiful and disassembly and reassembly is butter smooth. I will try to get some decent pictures tomorrow. I need daylight for good shots since I’m just using my phone for pictures these days. I can’t promise beam shots but I’ll try. Sorry for being so wordy but that’s just kinda how I roll.

My L2 just shipped SmileCool.

Thnx!
I got a tracking number from Simon so my l2 is also on my way.

Ordered mine with the XM-L2 T6-3B
Without the BLF discount

Could you imagine if they came out with a 8.4v 26650 size battery? :open_mouth: Talk about having your cake and eating too!!

Can anyone give me a rough idea of the hotspot size at 100 and/or 200 yards? Also, any thoughts on a XPG2 in one of these. I’m thinking long range hunting/search light.

Look up DST threads. It should have a relatively similar beam profile.

Okay so I have good/bad/mixed news from Simon… The following statements are where we stand with any changes as far as I know. Simon told me this yesterday. I do my best to summarize what the majority of BLF is asking for but I think Simon gets input from plenty of people and when it comes down to it he calls the shots. With that said here is where things stand:

  • There will be no extension tube or OP reflector for the current L2 :frowning: At least for now he does plan to continue to sell the current L2 in host form and as a complete light.
  • The upcoming (2×26650) version of the this light is being designed specifically as an XHP-70 light and it will have a new name. It will be available in complete light and host form in maybe 2 months if there are no further stumbling blocks.
  • The complete light will come with an XHP-70.
  • MCPCB will be 20mm.
  • Driver shelf will be either 22mm or 30mm. If 30mm Simon plans to package it with an adapter for a 22mm driver.

I don’t have any details on what driver he plans to use in the stock light and I think it’s a little early to ask prices. Originally it was supposed to have a side switch but Simon cancelled that because he says “side switch is no good for DIY”. Those were his words. I don’t think the general BLF population agrees with that opinion and I’ve told Simon as much but again it’s not my call. If a lot of people speak up and cry out for the side switch I will be happy to reiterate our “group opinion” but I can’t speak for all so make your thoughts know on the side switch.

Any way you look at it I’m excited to see Simon selling a stock Convoy equipped with an XHP-70!

:_( 4 side switch. <- crying out for a side switch.

How about a poll? Would you want a side switch in a convoy 2x26650 host?

OH BOY! |( NO extension for the L2? |( But I know why… if he did make a 2x26650 extension for the L2, who would want his “NEW VERSION”? As far as the E-Switch I would like it…IF it had a push button and it also activated the light too? Take the UranusisonFire 818, it has both E-switch and push button, and you have the choice of using one or the other to activate the light and the push button locks it out too, way cool!!! Or it might as well be a X6? :frowning:

The bigger and fatter the light, the more important a side switch becomes. Larger lights are difficult to shift in one hand from a “pointing” grip to a “mode selection” grip. So the side switch is a game changer for sure.
That said, the kill switch in the tail ensures safe travel, long term emergency storage with no drain, and a lock-out ability for various reasons.

I cry out for a side switch too. :_(

The Convoy L4 is a favorite due to it’s combination of tail clicky and side e-switch. Carry on with that lineage and be popular or lose out to the other guys.

How do I get 15% discount for the host option? Do I need to send message to Simone?

I don’t like tailcap clicky + e-side switch on larger lights. It’s good on single cells like the L4, but on large flashlights I much prefer just a side switch. Anodized tailcap threads for lockout.

Though if it comes down to having both or just the tailcap clicky I would definitely rather have both.

Well, I'm all bout side switch's for sure now. I got the lock-out feature built in the 85 firmware now, so it's a lot more secure (I'm using this lock-out feature every day now). For DIY modding pleasures, it's sooooo much better to have a switch mounted in the housing with just 2 wires hanging out into the pill, like a SRK. Much better driver options this way. If Simon had a host with both side switch and tail switch, best of both worlds, to name a few: Yezl Y3, Eagle Eye X6R, UranusFire 818, Convoy L4 (Simon's), Warsun X60 and their re-branded equals, etc.

Also (I think) that type of housing mounted switch should hold up much better. I've had a couple of driver mounted switch's fail on me - they were repairable, but still... They have to take a lot of force, and for the types where just 2 soldered joints are holding it down, besides two thru hole plastic pins, it shouldn't last long by design. There are, of course, better designs and poorer designs. The SolarStorm SC0n series of lights have a tab on top of the switch that extends into a slot in the pill top, so you have a much better secure mount that can take more force.

What I did was submit the order with a message, asking for the discount. Then Simon updates the price of that order.. Then you pay. On Ali, the order can be made, then you can pay for it at a later time.

Thanks cant wait to put one spare LD-2 that I have left, with some nice tint XP L HI ! Have anyone tryed the V2 3C from intl-outdoor ?

This is pretty much the response I expected to hear about the decision to cancel the side switch. Halo, buddy if it makes you feel better you are the first person I was sad for when Simon told me that. :_( You’ve been screaming for a side switch since I said “new L2”. I don’t think there is any need for a poll. For what it’s worth I just sent Simon one final message on behalf of “the little switch that should have been”. I told him that I announced the details of the new light and every comment I got about the switch removal was sadness. I made it very clear that BLF does not agree with this decision. I’m not going to beat a dead horse if he holds his ground but one last shout form “the voice of the people” can’t hurt. I can’t say whether or not it will change his mind but I started doing this for Simon because he needed a way to speak to BLF just as much as I thought he needed to hear the voice of BLF. I put equal value on praising the good stuff as I do telling him when we don’t like something. I’ll still own the new light when it comes out but I’ll be just a little happier if this new light has a side switch. I’ll keep you all posted.
