Home Depot Deal Alerts & Discussion Thread

The flyer that contains info on the Triple 3C light came out. Sale is Novenber 19 to December 2

I finally noticed the $4.88 35 piece HDX drill bit set. They are among the Holiday gift displays, in the same general area as the Holiday flashlights. 35 bits for $4.88 IS a good deal. They are selling fast, looks like half of the stock is gone already.

I also saw that clamp worklight that I bought and returned. Even though they just came out, they are already on clearance. $14.04, ends with a “4” means it will be reduced to $7.02 very shortly.

Look what’s back! When I first came across this display I had this urge to buy one.
Then I remembered that I already had 3 :Sp

This deal looks compelling, but solar pathway lights just don’t work as well as one would like.
At $4.53 for a 6 pack, it works out to 75 cents a piece. That’s cheap!

A couple of days ago I helped out a friend as a consultant with an upcoming restoration job he had in another town. After we surveyed the site we went over to a nearby HD. He wanted to see the d-cho mojo in action! As we headed into the store we parted ways though. He wanted to check out the chainsaws. I headed into lighting and quickly came across a Plugmold tamper proof outlet strip. Original price was $81 and it was marked down to $21.03. The date was old enough to be a penny so I grabbed 1 (there were 2) and headed up to self checkout. Sure enough, a penny. So I bought it and headed outside to off load it into the car. I went back in and grabbed the other one and found him looking for me in one of the isles. He told me we had to go, his office scheduled another appointment for him. I explained what I had already done and gave him the second one so he could have the pleasure of checking it out himself. When we got to the checkout he scanned it and verified that it rang up at a penny, but he got flustered and set it back down on the WRONG side of the checkout. I told him he had to move it over to the bagging side and when he did it scanned AGAIN. To that, he got even more flustered and I explained to him it didn’t matter, it’s ONLY a penny, SO WHAT. Of course by then the self checkout helper noticed the problems and came over. Good thing he had already paid and had the receipt because he took issue with it. He called electrical about it but they never came so he finally just let us leave. My friend was impressed and once again I felt the thrill of victory.

We already cooked two turkeys and a meat pie or whatever it’s called in it. heh

I found a problem with the cooker. It rusts. The metal ceiling of the heating area rusts.
When you leave it off and closed for a while, the moisture would condensate on the top and the heating area would be all wet. Then when you turn it back on, it dries out the water very quickly causing it to rapidly rust.

The metal cage looks like it will not rust but the ceiling and propellor would. The propellor has not rusted much at all, just some coloration, but the ceiling has quite large rust areas. Also the screws rusted.

I wonder if after a lot of use the ceiling would rust through and it would break. Or maybe the top layer of rust will protect it. Only time will tell.

That depends on who and/or where. Where we are it is very dark at night (rural area, no bright lights anywhere in sight except for the damn cars) and solar lights work very well. We got solar lights from Dollar Tree. They are low quality but they work well and look nice.

But in your area with a thousand LED bulbs you got for cheap of course they won’t do didli squat.

btw, I just discovered Harbor Freight and that they sell cheap tools… yes I’ve heard of Harbor Freight but never browsed or entered their site or store. Just now I did after being recommended some hole saws for cheap. I needed a hole saw to drill a hole in our distribution panel for a sub panel. At home depot a 2” hole saw is nearly $15!! For a little more I found I can get a whole kit of hole saws at Harbor Freight. So now i’ve been interested in Harbor Freight tools and we’ll see what they have in store and hopefully they sell that kit in stores.
Also i’ve heard that Harbor Freight will give you a free multimeter whenever you buy anything. Or something like that. Someone sent Dave Jones the “World’s Cheapest Multimeter” which he said he got for free from Harbor Freight when buying a $3 torch. Here’s the video: https://youtu.be/d75uoCu69WY?t=33m49s

Edit: actually searching on google it looks like that was just a coupon for a limited time… google images gave a lot of results of harbor freight coupons for free things so it looks like harbor freight often gives free stuff every once in a while.

Harbor Freight actually has some good stuff among the junk, you just have to know which is which. My last trip to HD had space cleared for the upcoming sale displays so I’ll check back there ASAP to get those HDX bits. I go through lots of them in my work where hidden nails are a given, rendering enough damage to make resharpening unfeasible.

If you watch it, he admits that as far as accuracy is concerned it is “spot on” He seemed surprised by that. Of course he laughed during the whole review as it is obvious that it is very cheaply made, and he wouldn’t recommend it for high voltages. In other words, it is perfect as a “starter” meter IF all you are measuring is low voltages.

BTW, why is no one surprised that the cheap Harbor Freight Calipers measure so well and why is it no one is surprised when the $1 Dollar Tree calculator calculates the square root of 2, accurately, out to 8 digits? They too are “spot on”

Because… it’s more expensive to make them not spot on? :stuck_out_tongue:

I went ahead and picked up one of the Defiant 850 lumen flashlights for $9.88 and a 2-pack of the 2xAAA Penlights for $4.88. When I first discovered this forum and started buying more and more lights, one of my first purchases was a 3D ArmorMax and shortly after, a DST. Since, then, I have purchased every single mid-sized or large Defiant flashlight that has been released. It’s kind of just become a tradition and as a result, there are Defiant flashlights under most of the sinks in my house and in most of the closets and cupboards- they come in pretty handy! My impression of the triple emitter 850 lumen holiday special- typical Defiant… It’s bright enough to impress non-flashaholics and actually throws fairly well for such a cheap light. Size is much easier to handle than the bigger ArmorMax, DST and last years LARGE Triple emitter lights from the holiday season… Is it really 850 lumens? I have no idea LoL - I don’t have any way to measure it.

The AAA pen lights are VERY cool in tint- almost purple. Definitely brighter than some other pen lights that I’ve seen that run on the little tiny button batteries. For the price, I would have no problem buying a couple packs to take camping or something just to have a small cheap light that puts out adequate illumination without worrying about losing them.

In conclusion: for $9.88, the 850 Lumen is more than enough light for non-enthusiasts and cheap enough to use it hard without worries. The pen lights are also priced right for what they are and if they last a month of hard use, then I’d be happy with my $5 investment. (There is a large Husky light that I have my eye on simply because of its looks- its almost obscenely BIG and it just kind of amuses me, haha… maybe I’ll post some thoughts on it if I grab one)
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Does anyone know if those $4.88 drill bit kits will be gone anytime soon? I’d like to get another one later when I run low on bits but not now. But if they are going to be gone then I would want to get another one now.

Also yesterday on Black Friday I saw a good deal for a drill/driver kit. It was a RIDGID kit and it had a LOT of driver bits but not many drill bits, and it was $9.88 I think.
Problem with that kit is that there are too many drive bits that you don’t need much but not many drill bits that you always need lots of.

I can’t seem to find it on home depot website so it was probably a black friday only thing?

Was at HD today and was looking at the Black Friday stuff while walking by, and then I found this:
A RIDGID 16 gallon wet vac! Price… $39! :open_mouth:

A while ago I was searching for 16 gallon wet vacs and the cheapest I could find was $100 for the Sears Craftsman wet vac. The cheapest for a 16 gal wet vac at Home Depot I saw was around $160 for a RIDGID vac. All of a sudden I see this and it is $40! :open_mouth: Huge difference!

It is lightweight and feels cheap and basic but not poorly made.

A friend and I hit HD on BF as they opened at 6 AM. I was there for the free coffee and donuts. He went straight for that vacuum.

If anyone is interested, some HD’s have a fair number of the older 5C Defiants for 10 bucks. I just picked up 3 at a local HD and some stores list over 30 in stock It’s pretty much a fence post with an led at the end but I really like these. Much more powerful then the BF 3c.

The 5C's and brethren seemed to be the end of high quality large Defiants.

poiihy,

Thanks for the Shop Vac alert. I picked one up. Seems like a great deal. My small anemic shop vac has been on it's last leg for years now. You the man!

Meant to post this earlier. I had to do some tricky free-hand drilling on the job (ironwork railing going through welds on an angle) and managed to break >$20 worth of my cobalt and TN bits so grabbed the new HDX set. The sharpness was impressive but they snapped at the slightest provocation. Nice having plenty of them as that let me get the job finished. This is the toughest field drilling job I’ve ever come across as low-grade iron comes with hard spots and the welds are always full of voids, plus drilling on an angle puts all the stress on one side of the bit till it’s fully engaged. I often break a bit doing this because of all that even using the best bits made.

tl,dr: Great for wood and softer metals, or ran gently in a drill press but don’t push them hard or they will snap. Still well worth $5 for the set

Phil

Next time you’re in Home Despot, pick a pack of punches.

When I worked as a welder, I found that if I use a punch (or three) as a stonemason would, to create a little pocket or dimple for the pilot bit, so it would engage the steel as fully as possible, that helped a lot. The finish bit would eat out the dimple.

OTOH, all the bits I broke made me very good at resharpening bits!!! That reminds me, if you do choose to resharpen your bits, almost no one has a Dressing Tool, which you’ll need for precise grinding.

HTH…
(EDIT: I don’t know if this needs to be said, but when cutting steel, rock, brick, whatever, anything even resembling Cutting Fluid — even plain water — is vastly better than trying to cut it dry…)

Yeah I’ve noticed this too. They drill very well but they break easily.

I found at Walmark a set of Black & Decker drill bits without a case that you can use to refill your case. But it was about $5, a little more than the Home Depot set, but the Hole Depot set had far more bits than this Black & Decker set, and a case.

Don’t you mean “Home Cheapo” or perhaps “Cheapo Depot”

I was in Home Depot today and already some of the flashlights that were brought out for the holidays have been reduced. Original price and new lower price should be visible in each shot.

Also of interest (to me) is this clearance item. The clearance sticker is $1.04 but they ring up for 52 cents. Any day now, if they are still around they will ring for a penny.

These 2 gallon buckets are always handy, now they are a dollar. Nice quality.

This ia bucket of 50 bungee cords for $7.00 Some are very small, none very large

Wow! :open_mouth: Where can I find those multiway extension leads? I want!!

Also, for the bungee cords, what’s with the cardboard back saying $7.88 and the sticker saying the original price is $19?
I saw those bungee cords but wasn’t interested in bungee cords so didn’t consider getting them.

If they haven’t sold out they should still be there
They are $7.00, not $7.88

I’m talking about the price on the cardboard that the sticker is covering. It looks like it is $7.88. But on the sticker it says the original price was $19… What’s up with that?
Was $19 the original price, then it was for sale for $7.88 for Black Friday, and now it’s discounted to $7.00?

I know where the bungee cords are but where are those 3 way power strips located?
