I don’t know if this is a Connecticut thing only but my Dollar Tree is stocking LED light bulbs. They are only the 40W equiv but they claim 3000K color and they are dimmable. When I get home I will do a comparison and a tear down. I bought 2

Found: $1 LED light bulbs at Dollar Tree

Nice, a few of my family members are looking for led lightbulbs.
Here are the pics. They work and they do not give off a purple light. They are actually quite nice.
All three of these LED bulbs are 40W equivalents. Philips-Osram on the left, CREE 4Flow in the middle and the Dollar Tree – GreenLite on the right.
In real life the Dollar Tree light is ever so whiter than the other 2. Not so much as to notice unless they are side by side as they are in this fixture. the difference being that the DT light is rated at 3000K vs 2700K for the other 2. In fact it seems all have gotten their talking points from the same source.
Thanks dchomak!
im going to check the danbury store on the way home. thanks.
Nice! I’ll check out my local (Texas) Dollar Tree next time I visit. Those look similar to the Lowe’s $2.50 bulbs I’ve been buying recently. I prefer the higher wattage bulbs, but these should be decent for closet duty at least…
For $1, I might just tear one down to see how they are built internally…

Well, for $1, I guess I could try it too. I might run down to the local Dollar tree and pick up a couple.

Looks great for the 5-bulb vanity we have in the bathroom. 60w is too much, maybe 40w will be just right. The CFL’s we’ve been using take too long to get bright

We purposely us some CFL’s just for that reason. Who wants to be bombarded with instant on brightness in the middle of the night?
Not that I yet have to do that.
I don’t, really.
It’s really annoying for a quick trip to check your teeth in the mirror though.
We have a nightlight that keeps the small bathroom bright enough that we don’t need to turn in any lights at all.
I also appreciate the 3000k the DT bulb offers. I think 3500k would be about perfect for indoor lighting.

I just did a partial teardown of the bulb. It looks like it is actually made quite well, no way this was built to sell for a dollar. Therefore I assume there is a subsidy involved here even though there is no notice to the effect.
Here is what’s inside
First of all the globe is not glass, it is vinyl or some other petrochemical product.
With the globe off, 4 sides to the “pyramid” with 2 emitters per side.
2 phillips screws hold down a cover plate that reveals an aluminum base-heat sink.
This is as far as I have gone, any further and I will destroy the bulb. So far it still works.
But then again it only cost a dollar so what the heck. I will press on and get to the driver later
Thanks a great bargain. Gotta go check my dollar tree
None at my local Dollar Tree either…

I’ve got a DT a few minutes away so will check S.C tomorrow and buy some if they have them.

Nice find and thread. Thank you for all the good info. That assistant of yours is one cool cat.
I spy a UL RU Recognized Component Mark with file number on the mcpcb. And UL provides a data base for file numbers. File number E323040 That component is made by SHUNG CHING ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY CO LTD SHENZHEN. Note that an RU mark does not mean the entire device meets UL requirements, just the single component. Good to see an RU mark in there.

Wow. Those are pretty cool
My gratitude to those who are willing and able to help others (in whatever way you can)! Being human is more than just existing for yourself.
First store had none on the floor, but the employee said that they have tons of stuff to put out in the back room. Second store had plenty, displayed in 2 different spots. I asked if it was a subsidy promotion and the employee didn’t know what I was talking about. There were no signs.
Sorry, this may have been a false alarm, and only available in Connecticut. :_(
(I picked up 16 more)
I think I’m going to go check dollar general and maybe family dollar.
Wow, electronupdate has a lot of cheap bulbs to teardown and review! I’d like to see the 99¢ Lowe’s bulb and this $1 Greenlite bulb reviewed and tested.
I’ve been getting these 60w ones at the Dollar Tree stores near me. 800 Lumens 2700k. ($1.00)
Incredible deal. Ran into them about a month ago and stocked up, bought about a dozen so far, they’re brighter than I thought they would be, so I’ve been putting them in all around the house.
Have you tested for flicker?
Not sure I understand, should I test somehow? >>> (been using a few weeks and they don’t flicker, working fine so far)
Wow, that’s great! Dollar Tree around here only have 450 Lumen bulbs!
I know, I was pretty stoked when I saw them, I was going to post on here about it but I wasn’t sure where else there were Dollar Tree’s then I forgot about it.
I had just bought several 60w/-800Lm- 750 Lm at Lowes (Utilitech brand) on sale for $2.00 each and a couple at walmart (Great Value brand) for $2.39 ea. So I had all 3 at once and did a side by side comparison in my 4 socket bathroom vanity fixture.
EDIT: I just checked mine and the Lowe’s bulbs are 750Lm not 800Lm, but the Lowe’s 750Lm appear a little brighter! (But that may be because of their slightly cooler tint)
The Dollar Tree and Walmart are 2700k, and the Lowes 3000k. The Dollar tree bulbs look a little warmer than the Walmart ones. All were nearly equal in brightness.
The slightly cooler Lowes bulbs won the spot in the bathroom fixture. Didn’t need any globes either they look fine in there just bare.
I have been waiting for these LED bulbs to go mainstream, and looks like they are now starting to be. Remember just a few years ago LED bulbs were costing $20 or more and they were packaged like high end electronics. Eventually they will be packaged 4 to a sleeve like the incandescents were.
An mp3 player isn’t packaged as attractively!
100W incandescents, 4 to a sleeve, definitely nothing fancy in the packaging.
And now the 99 cent bulb at Lowes. This no frills packaging means that LEDs have finally arrived into the mainstream!
Hmmmmm? Lowe’s has the Utilitech bulbs in six-packs now, for a bit under $12…
I visited my local store yesterday looking for any deals and couldn’t find any clearance bulbs or .99 bulbs so I just got the six pack of 60W equiv. I put three of those in the bathroom fixture, MUCH brighter than the CFL I had previously installed. At least they seemed that way without the long warmup time the CFLs had…

keltex78, that’s not a bad price, and 6 to the pack is just the kind of packaging I was talking about.
Just an FYI, those 99 cent bulbs will be back at Lowes for a Black Friday sale and they are the same exact bulb as the 2 pack for $3.98 and quite possibly the bulbs in your 6 pack. If like them and you can stand the crowds, you may want to get some this BF. HD and Lowes are the 2 first stores I hit each BF morning at 6AM
HD always has free coffee and donuts
beam0,
Would you be willing to sacrifice one of the GreenLite 800 Lumen bulbs by cutting the dome off with a hack saw?
I am assuming that it also is made of vinyl and it would be nice to see how it is constructed. If not, I will be passing thru PA in a week or so and can try to find some at a DT out there. One of the things I am interested in finding out is if the bulb is made to sell for $1, or there is a PA subsidy behind the price.
