"It lit my kids face on fire" e-cig explosion

That model doesn’t come with a battery but takes 18650. I wonder what battery he was using?

Besides that, the whole concept is stupid to me. Forget the actual vapor part of it, I wouldn’t put anything drawing that much power into my mouth.

I feel terrible for that guy :frowning:

This has nothing to do with minors though, if it was an adult using it the results would have been the same :frowning:

I wonder if it had a ultrafire/chinese model battery or a name brand Panasonic/LG type battery.

It’s time for an absolute ban on lithium cells coming out of china. Too often, regulators want to blame lithium cells in general, and stop import completely or restrict from airlines, etc. That isn’t sustainable, obviously. But, we can and should permanently ban Chinese cells.

The general American public (and many legislators) Can’t/Don’t/Won’t differentiate China from Japan or Korea. They would end up pursuing a ban on all loose cells. Besides that, I don’t think it would really solve anything. All those hoverboard problems came from battery packs that were pre-installed. Some of them even had Japanese cells and the circuit boards were what caused the hazard. Are we going to ban everything from China?

exactly, we understand the nuances of li ion batteries, lawmakers would not

Personal responsibility needs to be re-instated. Every time something like this happens it’s never the person who did it, jut the device. If you want a e-cig, i have no problem with that, but learn the dangers asscociated with it.

That aside, I do feel sorry for the kid. That’s gonna be with him for the rest of his life.

Yeah, I was just dreaming… :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m sure it was a Chinese cell. There are only a few places to get a Lithium Ion cell in Canada, which are extremely expensive. I’m experienced, but a kid or an average joe wouldn’t know were to look. $20 18650 or $4 18650 with a free charger and free shipping. To most people it’s just a battery, so go for the cheapie. I’m a smoker, and every time I’ve considered trying out an e-cigarette, the thought of a Li-Ion almost in my mouth makes me cringe. Even a Japanese or Korean cell.

Funny that the article does not even mention the battery, let go question it, while over here it is the first and only part we are talking about. That says something about the general knowledge about li-ion powered devices.

You are right. Even the press wouldn’t have enough knowledge about the subject to pose the question.

People are so used to alkalines and eneloops that the possibility of a cylinder battery exploding rarely crosses their minds, even though an ecig seems to be about 80% battery. What else would explode? The juice?

Hell. I get nervous holding some of my modded lights in my hand.

Always hold them off at arm’s length to the side — same as if you were shining the light toward someone who might shoot at it.
Don’t point the tailcap at your body.

Joking? Me?

Announcing the newer, safer, e-vaperator — keeps the dangerous part 24” away from your face.

Until you inhale.

A freind of mine was so proud of his e-cig mod that he built himself. .2 ohm coil he claimed. I tried to explain that such little resistance was likely between the test probes, and the coil was a dead short. He wouldn’t listen. When the trustfire cell popped out I couldn’t leave the room fast enough. I bought him an Efest high discharge cell just so I didn’t have to pick up the prices of him later.

I think it should all be banned in the US. All e-something and vaping. It will prove out after all the testing, that is is worse on the lungs than smoking and I also truly believe all forms of Lithium batteries should have never been allowed in the US. It is the most toxic stuff for battery technology and the least stable of what it out there. I know, I know, but I still never carry lithium cells of any type and won't. I stick with NiMH or Alkalines.

I mean absolutely no disrespect Old-Lumens, but isn’t the camera you shoot your youtube vids with powered by a Li-ion battery?

You’re not wrong when you say the stuff is unstable. What really makes me nervous is a tesla or other electric car in a wreck.

He was probably hitting on a sub ohm RDA. The one he was using looks like it had venting holes but looks also like they were blocked over by the cool scull sticker over the bottom. Dumb! Plus it is a mechanical mod meaning it does not shut off if you keep holding the button down. Most all young vapers use them. All these vaping devices should have a blow away section once a vent is immanent. Like a passive pressure sensor that opens the bottom of the device. Remember, I came up with the idea first here...lol.

I tried the sub ohm stuff but it draws too much current from the battery for my comfort and the battery does not last as long. I went back to a regular 1 ohm RBA where I could at least get a day of use. Plus I do not use pen type mechanical devices, or any mechanical devices for that matter. Use only new high quality cells. Never had a vent or heard of one around me. All my devices have a 10 second cut off. The vape shops around here do not cell the cheap cells, only the good ones. I'm pretty sure this kid must have picked up some cells and a charger from ebay, ultrafire most likely. Shops around here also do not sell the poorly made pen type mods. Ebay needs to ban them because that is mostly where they are all coming from.

Go type 18650 battery right now into the search box of ebay. Little bombs ready to blow kids faces off, a very high percentage of them. Ebay will be the last to pull them because they are making so much money on them right now and have been for years. Then click the sold box on the left to get an idea of how many of these are making it out to people.

Well the main problem here are not the batteries!
It is the mods done to these vapors some people are pulling 20 amps how many flashlight do you own they pull 20 amps? from a single cell?
We mod flashlight and are weary of them but these guys do crazy mods pulling insane amounts of current and they don’t blink?

I will edit this so he was using a Wotofo Phantom and apparently these are popular to do hybrid top cap mods? but they are dangerous apparently? i do not smoke so i can not say.

There’s been considerable speculation as to the cause of the li-ion problems. Can you cite the source of your information attributing circuit boards as being the culprit? 0:)
