ENEDED

Sure you can use 18650's or AAA triple carriers. AAA's would probably kill high output though, but never seen any attempts to use 4 of them in one light.

well IF it comes to ordering this big guy I will surely pop in 12 AAAs just to see how it works

I am still not certain which emitter is the best choice for this light for a DD without a driver. What should I get if I want to run it without a driver? A dedomed xm-l2 U4 1C or dedomed xp-l V6 2C?

A dedomed XP-L V6 0D will give you closest tint to CW

I have another question. Is the difference between an overdriven xp-g2 vs xm-l2 worth it? Will the throw increase from roughly 700kcd with a dedomed xm-l2 to 900kcd with a dedomed xp-g2 be worth the additional effort and expenses of a buck driver and modding the battery carrier for 2s2p?

Too bad the pill is so shallow or I would buy the Boss just to build a light that has a fail probability of 98% from the get go. I would do this just to satisfy my own curiosity.

I would use a step bit and expand the hole in the bottom of the reflector to 20mm and flush mount a Carlco triple optic in the bottom for no other reason than to see what would happen.

Not sure what you mean. I measured and posted the pill area is 9.5 mm in height for the cavity - more than enough room to piggyback in a typical FET driver. How much space do you need?

Im not sure. I’m still thinking about the logistics fo heat sinking since the MCPCB would then be hanging inside the pill below the emittier plate. I guess there is a possibility, I’m still chewing on it. I’d have to design a separate platform for the noctigon to sit on and still be able to transfer the heat out through the body. Everything I’ve come up with so far would require thermal epoxy. I’ve experienced many fails with epoxy solutions already.

The emitter plate is huge, I mean big, and if you stay with a single 3V emitter, there's not a ton of heat there. The shelf is so wide, you might be able to go deep with the a heat sink directly under the MCPCB and still have room for a piggyback driver off to the side. There's a bunch of options. I'd look at securing it better to the body on the side - you have a lot of room there, specially on the top side around the reflector.

Normally I’d jump on it and figure out things as I go, but since mounting an optic inside a reflector might be a bad idea from the get go, I have to think about cost. With the Canadian dollar in the tank, I’d have to calculate close to an extra 40¢ On the US$. Suddenly it’s getting a bit pricey.

Hi, how do you center emitters in the Boss for the best throw? And how “deep” should a led be in the reflector? thanks!

We call it “focusing”, and varies quite a bit based on the LED you are using - XM-L2, XP-L, XP-L HI, XP-G2, etc. Then de-domed changes things too. Right now, the BOSS1 I have needs to come out of the reflector a little for the best throw. I’m using a dedomed XP-L.

the cell 26650 are all in parallel right? because the working voltage is between 3v… has anyone measure the runtime? with the standard drive…

Yes, parallel. No, didn’t measure runtime but you can do the math. If you use four 4500 mAh BASEN’s, 18000 mAh total, and pull 3.5A, as I measured stock, that’s over 5 hours, but actual runtime will be higher, probably 6-7 hours because as the cells deplete, the amps drawn (and output) drops.

It’s a light made for throw and long runtimes.

awesome……

Minor update for 2017 version. New version now includes sling strap and tripod mounting hole.

And also upgraded CaroNite 26650 5600S from one of the sellers. Tempted to buy one more for mod, but I got 2 already.

This light is so heavy with 4 cells loaded; not suitable for EDC, even mid-long hour carrying

In this 2017 revamp, did they make the threading better?

Vinh sent me a Modded Boss1. It has his programmable driver and does 570 kcd and 1400 lumens otf. Im going to order a UCLp lens for it so maybe ill hit 600kcd. That would be plenty.

I really like this light, Its so obnoxiously heavy its hilarious. I use keeppower 5200mah for this light so 20,800 mah lol. I actually perfer the shallower wider reflector as it makes the spill wide and the hotspot neater and sharper and larger.

These are my measurements taken at 10m. beamshot below is in order of list

1)Deft edc X Enthusiast 510 kcd(my card says 404kcd but I always measure much higher no mater how well I calibrate. I think Michel measures very conservatively
2)M25c2vnT (618kcd)
3)Bossvn 570kcd
4)K50v3vn (has xhp35) 535kcd

Im on cpf more then on here. Im on so many forums some just get more love then others lol. But I just love how far TOM E drives these leds. Never knew 1900 lumens was possible with xlm2 u4.

Im sure Vinh could do the same but I think he tries to strike a balance between power and reliability as he sells a lot of lights so this bossvn is kept to a still respectable 1400 lumens.

I hit over 700 kcd when playing with focusing of the dedomed XPL, but I know vinh can do focusing better than I can. I had it out on the 4th - it's impressive.
