[07-MAR-2016] Current status of BLF upgrade process

These all dns problems in 99% cases come from change done incorrectly and not from “dns being slow”.

DNS zone contains TTL record which informs dns resolvers how long they can cache information. Properly done move is like this:

- assuming current TTL is 4 days (for example) -> lower TTL to 5 minutes

- wait 4 days until all cache entries on resolvers are known to expire

- then do changes (remember that TTL is only 5 minutes now, so that’s how long resolvers will cache the information)

  • changes can also include restoring TTL to old value

First impression, I like the new Look.

It still looks like snot in a sock on my monitor, but that’s Winders’ fault as much as anybody’s. The ad at the top is wider than the screen, so I sometimes get the Horizontal Thumb because of the ads. No “Width=100%” on ads, eh? I’ll repeat my standard whine, that script kiddies (the ones who wrote the middleware we’re using here as well as FireFox contributors and Winders code puppies) need to get some sort of clue and test their work as if they once met a “professional” programmer. (“It works on my system” would get you a stern talking-to at the Help Desks I managed.)

Question: I really liked the old “Subject”’ (whatever it was called, I forgot) line on Replies. That appears to be gone now. No heartbreaker, but it was a nice touch (IMNERHO, of course) to be able to lead off with a pithy sentence to summarize the upcoming post. The existing “Subject” lines are gone too. (I only use the “Simple Post Editor”, but if I have to change to the ‘Complicated’ (“non-Simple”) one — oh, well.)

PS: Speaking of professional programmers, did you forget that “The first half of a project takes the first 90% of the time; the second half takes the other 90% of the time.”

I’d like to revise and extend my last comment and add my vote that this most-useful feature be restored. Dittos to Buwuve and the Green Lantern.

Help please. I tired to add a picture in a reply to a post. I used the same method I always do. It didn’t work. The ‘save’ and ‘preview’ buttons were not highlighted. Can some tell me how with the change, thank you!

Re: the subject line. Subject line is only needed once when the original post is being made. Having it change like it used to didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

SB, I didn’t realize the update was mainly about security. that definitely is number one reason to make changes. Mobile friendly would be nice sometime.

Wow looks really slick SB. Keep up the great work!

More comments:

1. Subject line on each post _ Not a big deal. Already don’t even notice it’s missing.

2. Emoticons with asterisks, like scratch_one-s_head and smile don’t work.

3. No longer can respond directly using only emoticons. Not a big deal. Members will quickly learn how to deal with it, by adding text or a space. (You can even add then immediately delete the text or space to get the emoticons to “stick”.)

4. As noted by TK and others, the direct link to post addresses works like a charm.

5. Text Format interface has been simplified. Much of the visual clutter is gone. Nice change.

6. I miss my listing of posts that used to be under My Account. Is that feature permanently gone under this revision? Or has it been relocated somewhere else?

People are asking about the location thing. It’s still there, you just click the username to see it. Like 1dash1 is in Hilo, Hawaii.
Personally, that is more than good enough. It’s one less thing being repeated down the page.

Links are not posting properly, see these posts for details

I noticed from the recent page you can click on the new post on a thread, but if you click on the thread itself it opens and says “X new”, but you can’t click on it to get to the first new post.

Hmm, seems to work for me. Is it possibly the issue I mentioned earlier in this thread where slow-loading images cause the page to “bounce” even though it starts off loading at the right post?

Yes I know that you make heavy use of the email notifications. Meanwhile don’t forget about the My Subscriptions page for keeping track of activity in your subscribed posts. The page with its new post notifications is still working fine, it’s just the email notifications that are broken.

As someone else mentioned, you can just click on the user’s profile to see what they have filled in for the location. But I’ll still try to figure out a way to get it back on the user’s details in the thread.

Yeah, I tried to change the TTL a few days before starting the migration, but my registrar told me they don’t allow changing it, and that it’s only set to 3600 seconds anyway.

I think the few remaining users with DNS problems still are the ones on corporate networks with local DNS caches that aren’t being refreshed.

Actually I was thinking about this too. But that would also create other problems such as massive 100% banners on a normal screen in maximized mode.

Ha, isn’t that the truth!

Hmm, it seems to work for me with the Simple Post Editor:

Perhaps i have not explained it well, if i see a page that says for example “2 new” i can click on “2 new” and it goes to the right post
If i click on the thread and not “2 new”, it opens from the start, it says 2 new near the top right, but there is not a link to go to the first new post like there used to be.

And in the Advanced Post Editor:

Ah sorry, gotcha now. Did you try the “First unread” button?

I did not notice it, i used to click on the X new, legacy knowledge scratch_one-s_head
sorry about that
