[07-MAR-2016] Current status of BLF upgrade process

Oops. I’m afraid it’s a bit difficult to add them back now. The configuration section of the Smiley module is refreshingly devoid of all semblance of design and usability.

But… when there is time, after other things, right? Right…? :(( :((

By the way, have I told you what a wonderful Admin you are recently? Exceedingly kind, intelligent and handsome too. Not one to forsake even a poor little ghost.

At the risk of looking like I’m calling someone out (there are plenty of examples, this is just handy) is there any way to limit the amount of quoted text?

Post 265 above looks like this on my phone:

Google Drive link works maybe?

Maybe it doesn’t bug anyone else, I feel like quoting the ENTIRE post is rarely required.

I could limit quotes to a certain number of levels, but I’m not sure if everyone would like that.

IMO while the number of quote levels was excessive in your example (fairly minor forum-etiquette issue), the real issue is simply that the forum’s styles do not change at all on smaller screen sizes. The margins/spacing in use there exacerbate the issue greatly.

For example, compare these two screenshots:

Some forums limit to the last quote, but i agree that its not an ideal solution. One thing i have noticed is some forums have the link to the quote

One could implement say last 5 quotes, every quote links to its source hence the first of the 5 link to the last one, which would show the previous 5, which links to the previous, so a few clicks can get you to the first post without having the crazy long quotes

I’m sure i am explaining this badly, trying my best

G'Day SB,

SB, it is now working, thank you Very Much.

Ooooopssssss, I saw the <Mark Read> button at top left & I pressed it while in this sub-forum, BUT it marked the entire forum including all sub-forums as read.

I assumed it would Only mark the current sub-forum as read (as it did previously).

AFAIK, the only <Mark Read> button that marked the entire forum (including sub-forums) as read was in the "root" forum ie: http://budgetlightforum.com/forum

Is the current behaviour wrong, Or?

Thank you Very Much,

George

I’m for a reasonable limit on quotes. I don’t know what it would take to ‘tile’ them in a stack (click on what you want to see) of to collapse them by default then add an “expand” button to read them.

That’s really been my biggest issue since I signed up here so I’d say you’re doing very well indeed SB.

Phil

I just did a quick test and found that it’s fairly simple to hide any quotes deeper than N levels. I tried to put in a placeholder for “(quote omitted)” instead though, and it didn’t work. So it’s easy to do if you don’t mind not knowing whether there are deeper quote levels.

I also made the dark theme use less padding around quotes, so it doesn’t turn into a vertical column so quickly.

With it set to N=3 (limit to three levels of quoting), the same post looks like this:

One big downside of doing this is that it might encourage people to quote even deeper, since they might not be able to see that they’re including so many levels.

Edit: FWIW, this can be done as an independent stylesheet so you can get the same effect regardless of what theme you’re using. If you want, you can try it here.

Oops, sorry about that! You’re right that it would probably be clearer to only have it in the root /forum page. It’s changed now.

For my part I do my very best to limit the amount of text I quote. When a heavily nested quote appears in my quote it is because I believe that the context is either very useful or entirely necessary for understanding what I am writing. Sometimes in busy/large threads with multiple conversations a big quote is easier for everyone.

I feel that an arbitrary limit on the number of quote levels is a bad thing.

I do think that Javascript could easily collapse some of the quoted posts in an expandable box. That would be worth investigating IMO. I’m not volunteering.

+1

OK, I re-enabled automatically subscribing to threads that you participate in. There is a new setting in your user profile under "Subscriptions" if you want to disable this feature.

Please note that email notification are not working yet. That will take considerably more time yet. Sorry for the delay!

What about broken smiley images? IIRC the Advanced Post Editor may have been inserting emoticons directly as images in the past. I could be way off base on that one. See this post for example: Building a short arc searclight - #20 by ImagioX1

I agree. It’s inherently a violation of scope for the forum or stylesheet to alter the content of people’s posts. If someone makes a mess, it should show the mess accurately. But on a per-user basis it can be nice to have an override switch. So there’s a depth-limit stylesheet, a cheap band-aid for when people are sick of the mess and want it fixed now.

Deep quoting can sometimes be useful, and I’d prefer not to eliminate it entirely.

I try to make sure that the only unnecessary data in my posts is my own incessant rambling. Sorry about that.

Yes I believe you’re right. I’ll look into it.

Thanks!

I went to go look, and I noticed something else. The location field seems to have gone empty in the past day or so. It used to be “Personal Information -> Location” with a value in it, and now it’s “General -> Location” and empty. I restored the old value, but … did everyone just lose their location data?

By chance, I took a screenshot of that yesterday. It looked like this:

It’s not lost, I just have it disabled for now. They are deprecating the old user Profile module in favor of Profile2, and in their typical clumsiness they provide no upgrade path. I do need Profile2 for the Subscriptions system functionality, so I installed the new one and disabled the old one. But if everyone strongly prefers, I can keep digging for a way to migrate the location data. My preference would be for everyone to fill it in again. But you guys/gals decide.

Sorry for all the hassles. Did I mention that the Drupal upgrade process is terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad?

I lost my location data, too. My location data is disabled, too.

How will anyone know I'm from Raccoon City? }:-)

No worries. It’d be ideal to migrate the data but, if not, I doubt it matters much. I understand that Drupal upgrades are rather unpleasantly like trying to pass a kidney stone.
