Hopefully this won’t be a wall of text but if it is can someone tell me what I doing wrong? All paragraphs are double spaced (at least when I typed them)
I got the 2 TN4A’s on Friday that that I ordered.The NW version.
So I played with them a little and the E.U.L. batteries do seem brighter than Alkalines, but Ill have to play with them some more. First time I thought it made a huge difference. The second time I was pointing at something farther away and they were still brighter, but the difference did not seem as big. Different night, different object to look at so maybe it was just perception.
I really like the TN4A, but getting in turbo mode is sometimes iffy. I don’t think it’s the light. I don’t double click fast enough or add a third click sometimes. Just my fumble fingers. One thing I did notice is turbo mode doesn’t make as big a difference as I thought. Almost twice the lumens, but it doesn’t seem twice as bright. High is really all I need, just got the more lumen bug I guess.
Now I need to find some good rechargeable batteries and a charger. Thought I’d go with eneloop pro’s and maybe the nightcore charger. I know the pro’s don’t take as many charges, but I’m not high use. The battery will probably die of old age first.
Yea, it takes a very large difference in lumens to make a noticeable difference in percieved brightness. Sometimes the turbo mode isn’t really that much brighter to the eye, even though in reality its 50% or more lumen output.
The struggle is real! Just wait until 1000 lumens, which was mind boggling at one time, now just seems kind of meh…
Lots of posts on this over the years. The human eye apparently has a logarithmic response to light rather than a linear one. The consensus seems to be that you need about 4 times the brightness to perceive a doubling in output.
A good driver (light) will have levels chosen to give a "visually linear" increase in output but this will result in some odd numbers of lumens when viewed on paper. It also takes dramatically more current (= less runtime) to make small increases at the upper end of the performance curve.
A good start if you want to know more would be to check out some of Toykeeper's work on the subject and most recently, the modes she programmed for the BLF X6/X5 lights.
Nice lights the TN4A, by all accounts. You really can't go wrong with Eneloops but the Japanese Sanyo branded varieties have shown better performance retention over large numbers of cycles (>400) than the newer Chinese Panasonic versions. I'm not sure whether testing has been done for the Pro version specifically.
New ? The boxes the lights came in did not have a yellow dot on them and just 2 O rings. Did Thrunite change packaging? and was there supposed to be a third larger O ring. Saw the differences in some vids I watched last night.

Helps if I read the manual I guess, (No face palm smiley, but I’d use it if it was there). 2 O rings come with the light.
Found some energizer 2300 mah hr batteries in town and an Energizer brand universal charger. So that will work for now. The red light came on with Duracell Alkalines after about 20 min of use. Switched from high to turbo quite a bit. Anyway, Alkalines don’t last long. I
I’ll get a better charger and pro Enaloops down the road
If the TN4A is like my Sunwayman D40A (another 4xAA ~1000 lumen light), then the flashlight is probably drawing a little over 2 amps from the battery on turbo. There’s just no way alkalines can deliver that kind of current for long. I use regular Eneloops in mine, and they’re great.
My TN4A gets used mainly for the moonlight mode in the wee’n’s bedroom - it has literally been going for months on end for around 14+ hours a day on moonlight. It gave up the ghost a few days ago so whacked in my fresh eneloops and I’ll have another look at it in a few months time again!! I have the occasional blast at turbo as well, just to keep the wee’n on her toes (only joking). It is a cracking torch and I love mine.
