PD68 Review: Thorfire S70 - XHP70 Monster

69.28mm
They fit, but it really is a tight fit, I would recommend cells to be shorted for this one.

I know my KingKong 26700 cells didn’t work, but they were only a tiny bit too long. I would expect anything under 69mm each to be fine.

Those of you that have this light, how do you like it? Do you agree with my assessment?

Thanks The Miller & pilotdog, I will get cells no more than 69mm long then, probably unprotected button/semi button top.
Just got to dig through the minefield of 26650 cell specs & claims :frowning:
Thanks again.
BTW I haven”t got mine yet but am looking forward to it arriving greatly.
Got a pair of Thorfire C8s” & I am very impressed with the build & finish of them so hopefully the S70 will be equally as good.

I like it, workng on a review.
Made the beamshots yesterday.

Cool thing, at 800 meter is the castle.
yesterday night I looked at the tower after they shut down the show lights.
I looked through a monocular in the direction of the towers, since I could not see it in the dark.
S70 on Turbo and bam there they were! Very cool.
When the weather permits will test the S50 tonight, to see if it can do the same.

Mine’s been working great. Quite a value for the cost.
Running King Kong 26650 4000mAh ICR26650 button tops (67.7 mm) - good fit
and used Sanyo/Panasonic NCR18650GA 3500mAh (69.0 mm) - very tight

Hmmmm…

So for this S70.

King Kong the best bet?
https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10003591/1263001-king-kong-icr26650-37v-4000mah-li-ion-rechargeable
But it show 68.4mm?

Edited: Vs Vappower 4200

Or Vappower 5200mAh?

Which is more preferable?
Cos i getting “x” numbers of batteries.
For J18/X100 as well, on top of S70.

Thanks.

I was considering King Kongs but wonder if there is enough advantage over a 3400 mah 18650 cell to make it worthwhile getting them ?
On paper the capacity gain is only roughly about 18-20% whereas if you got 52000 mah 26650 cells the capacity gain is roughly 50%.
Obviously I know that the above is dependant on the cells actually having the claimed capacity in the first place.

Your biggest advantage is much less voltage sag. Factory 5.5 amps or modded to even higher and 18650’s get warm and lose some capacity where 26650’s are just sailing through. Looking at the test done by HKJ the 3400 mah Panasonics have 3040 at 5 amps. The 5200 mah Keeppower have 5080 at 5 amps, with voltage staying much higher the whole way. In Panasonics favor I don’t fear their unprotected cell. The 26650’s need to have PCB’s.

I wasn”t suggesting not to use 26650”s but to use 26650”s of around 5000-5200 mah in preference to 4000 mah to get longer run times.
Why do 26650”s have to be protected ?
For one thing I don”t think that protected cells will fit the S70.

Since I intend to use the S70 on Turbo much of the time (resetting after 3 mins as needed), I wanted a high-drain 26650 to ensure best performance.
These appeared to be the best balance of performance/capacity that would fit properly:

Do you think that they would out perform an unprotected button top of around 5000-52000 mah that is rated at say at least a constant 10 amp then ?
Is this the same cell as the graphs are for a King Kong http://www.banggood.com/2PCS-INR-26650-E-Protected-4000mAh-3_7V-Li-Lon-Rechargeable-Battery-p-917357.html

Sounds like a 5000-5200mAh at 10A would be fine - I just couldn’t find one short enough to work…

Seems like the same cell but the quoted length (if accurate) is longer (69.5 vs. 67.7). Mine are a tight fit already.

Because the 26650’s are made in China and I don’t trust the quality control in multi cell lights to them. Single cell lights don’t get uneven voltages. The PCB’s add that level of safety.

I have spoken to HKJ & he has recommended Keepower IMR 5200 mah unprotected button top cells at 67.40mm.
Here is his review of the cell Test/Review of Keeppower IMR26650 5200mAh (Black) 2015 | Candle Power Flashlight Forum
I am going to go with his recommendation

Sounds good - let us know how they work out. I need a some backup 26650s.

PD, I have one I ordered from Amazon for review and I LOVE it! Measured a bunch of lights tonight on the IS and included the S70.

4,545 OTF lumens and 9.22A being pulled at the tail (2*4.61A). No mods performed and running KK 26650 cells. Wonderful light!

That would explain some of the beam shots that I have seen where it would appear that it is more than 3000 lms

It is impressive that is for sure.
Nice to see them understate specs, normally it is the other way around.
The S50 has longer runtimes then Thorfire claims, also very nice.

i think you canot add the Amperes from cells in Series

4,6A stock is still impressive
