[07-MAR-2016] Current status of BLF upgrade process

I know itā€™s a joke but there are some very cheap small wifi modules that could fit in larger lights. Of course beyond the cool factor it doesnā€™t seem very useful. Plus there is the issue of battery life and I think the aluminum body of our lights might reduce the signal.

Halo and Bort,

As I was typing my message which was indeed originally intended as a joke aimed at SB, I started laughing because everything each of you said went through my head in the time between brain and screen.

I am certain that Toykeeper could (and probably will) make that happen from the programming end and yes, even now this ā€œcouldā€ be a reality though Halo I think you are correct in saying that it is not practical beyond the ā€œcoolā€ factor at this time based on current hardware, at least within the ā€œbudgetā€ category. It wonā€™t take long though for the hardware to make my joke a reality to become available.

Anyone care to place a wager on whether or not this will happen in the next 5 years? Iā€™m not a betting man, but I predict my joke will be in some of our BLF lights within the aforementioned timeframeā€¦ :face_with_monocle:

5 years is quite awhile. Iā€™ll bet someone builds one within that time. You could seriously do one now. Donā€™t even need serious coding like ToyKeeper and others do. You could likely get by with some arduino level stuff. A SRK type light would probably be easiest since it has room and 4x18650s. And I think the cost would be more in time / effort than price. The extremely popular ESP8266 wifi modules start at like $2. All thatā€™s stopping someone is the will to do it. :face_with_monocle:

There is that asgard bluetooth light, not sure if it can do this if modified but its probably could if you had a desire to go modding crazy.

Do they still sell that asgard bluetooth thing? Wasnā€™t that a flop? And I recall it being flaky.

Have I mentioned recently that I love this forum?

Sorry SB, I didnā€™t mean to hijack your thread. Seems to be a theme around hereā€¦ O:-)

Was going to mention the Flex Asgard, but Iā€™m too late. It probably would have been more popular if they started with an EDC-sized design first.

I donā€™t really want network communication protocols in my flashlight though. I mean, if I want network-driven lights there are already lightbulbs which can do itā€¦ Or, you know, cell phones.

Besides, in 5 years SB will probably have BLF developed to the point where itā€™s self-aware.

Lol. I do this to avoid serious coding. Iā€™m not really a specialist of any type, more of a generalist, and I like variety in what I do. Canā€™t quite say Iā€™m ā€œten miles wide and one inch deepā€, but maybe half a mile wide and a couple feet deep? I dunno. I seem to be pretty okay at a lot of things but awkwardly unexceptional at all of them.

Anyway, Iā€™m glad SB is getting so many options working. Iā€™m also glad people tolerate my ramblings. Sometimes it takes me a while to realize Iā€™m thinking out loud.

Hey, SB!

I just went to click on My Account, overshot it, and clicked the wrong spot. Oh, oh ā€¦ I just accidentally logged out.

But, no, I was still logged in!

On closer inspection, I see that youā€™ve provided a separate window for logging out, just like you said that you would.

Thanks! No more accidental log-outs!

You have a large community of flashaholics that beg to differ with your humble opinion of your own work. ;) You saying you arenā€™t an artist doesnā€™t change the facts oh Sorceress of light. :)

indeed, Toykeeper is held in high regard on BLF

I was also going to mention the Asgard. But this also appeared on the front page: Wi-fi enabled LED bulbs - Phillips Hue alternative

very good point, it doesnā€™t have to be a flashlight bulb, those wifi light bulbs already have the necessary hardware.
Lets hope they are open source

One of these days Iā€™m going to learn to keep my mouth shut when I donā€™t want to get compliments or de-rail threads.

Itā€™s like the kid who took orchestra class for a few years and can play violin better than anyone in an average pub, but they wouldnā€™t make the cut for a serious orchestra. Iā€™m that kid, not the acclaimed concert solo violinist. And Iā€™m totally okay with that; Iā€™m not looking for praise or reassurance. Itā€™d get boring doing the same thing long enough to get to an expert level.

Edit: Iā€™mā€™a just be quiet now, since I suspect I may be trying to get out of quicksand by flailing. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled forum tech discussions. BLF is pretty much back to its former level of functionality, but this time with some pretty sweet upgrades. And Iā€™m pretty sure SB sprained some part of his brain with all those long hours of PHP code. This kind of injury only be treated with copious amounts of beer.

 Sweet, glad someone noticed. Thanks to whoever it was that originally gave that suggestion.

It was me! <:-)

Well, not exactly. I pointed out the problem of accidental log-outs, especially when using portable devices. Youā€™re the one who came up with the idea of putting the log-out in a separate window.

I may have missed this, but is there any plans to allow more then 40 posts per page?

Please donā€™t be afraid of compliments, it means your appreciated

Very possible!

FWIW weā€™re currently on 30 per page. Unfortunately SB has mentioned that the new forum software version seems to have severely broken this functionality. Itā€™s on SBā€™s radar that weā€™d like to have adjustable (10-300) posts per page the feature back if/when possible.

For my own part I previously browsed on 30-per-page and only adjusted upwards to 300 when I needed help finding a specific post in a larger thread. The current thread-search functionality works better for that so Iā€™m quite happy with 30.

Itā€™s currently at 30. The reason for that is due to the former default of 30, and most of the old links that users have posted to specific posts in a thread are relative to a 30 posts/page scheme. So by maintaining it at 30 most of the old links are finally working still work.

I was thinking about adding another tab at the top of each thread for a very long 300 posts/page overview with no images or formatting, kind of like the ā€œmobile viewā€ that some forum platforms have. This would kill two birds with one stone, also being useful for users that like to save long threads for offline viewing.

I remember that being a bug in the old version,. Also i liked 300 except the what you got today and home depot deals thread because they would take several minutes to load
