PD68 Review: Thorfire S70 - XHP70 Monster

I finally received my light in the mail today. Very happy with an as is factory budget light and that rarely happens. Output, 4 mode spacing, size, itā€™s all as advertised. Current readings and a thorough stripping is not happening anytime soon. The two modā€™s I do see are as follows;

1st thing I noticed is that the batteries are tight regardless of length. Springs are thick and well coiled. One modification I like to do on high amps light is stick these in. Gold Plated Beryllium Copper Spring 5mm H x 11mm D Both this and the original spring is 1mm dia. however the replacement is a better material. This should now allow the longest batteries listed to be used. My choice is King Kong 26700 with a magnet. Probably only replace the one under the driver to allow the tail spring to give that battery tight push needed for different lengths.

2nd thing is to look at the driver for a modest current bump.

Output is impressive, but all mods are on hold until my shoulder heals Iā€™m in day 13 of rotator cuff surgery.

12 dayā€™s to the UK using Deutsche Post.

:crown:

This will be my first powerful light purchase. The brightest light I currently own is an old maglite 3D I popped a P4 in years and years ago. Iā€™ve gone a little crazy lately since joining the forum and ordered a half dozen lights or so, but this S70 is the one Iā€™m really looking forward to. Can anyone else confirm that the keeppower 5200 unprotected 26650ā€™s are the way to go? I ordered two of them but will order something else if needs be.

Those batteries should work great in your light. Plenty of current plenty of run time.

I run them in my S70
Also have a look at this thread Thorfire S50 / microReview + Budget Mod
Apparently this simple mod on the S50, 1 blob of solder, can also be done to the S70 giving a BIG increase in performance, although the S70 is already a very bright light as stock

The Keeppower 26650 5200mAh batteries should work fine.

However, if youā€™re the type of flashoholic that tries to squeeze every last lumen out from his flashlights, then Iā€™d suggest trying one of the top performers recommended by Mooch:

  • AWT Yellow 75A 4500mAh
  • Basen Black 4500mAh
  • Brillipower Green 80A 4500mAh
  • Efest Green 20A 4200mAh
  • MXJO Yellow 35A 3500mAh

Plus this one, recommended by many of our BLF members:

  • Efest Purple 40A 4200mAh (Tested well by Mooch, but not recommended by him due to one dud cell.)

If you compare the Keeppower 26650 5200mAh curve ā€¦

ā€¦ against those of the top performers, youā€™ll see a considerable difference (0.3V to 0.4V) in voltage sag under 15A loading.

At the 5A loading of the Thorfire S70, the difference between the top performing batteries and the Keeppower 26650 5200mAh batteries would be much less (say 0.1V to 0.2V). And that difference would be more than compensated for by the longer run times of the Keeppower batteries.

Got myself 2 Heter 4500mAh cells from Gearbest for the S70
They measure 10mR and 5000mAh
And the S70 seems a little bit brighter with them compared to use it with protected 18650 cells I used to test with.
Oh they were $11/

And welcome to BLF!

hey guys i used my lg 18650 HG2 fully charged at 4.10 volts gives me about 4.6 amps at the tail-cap so that puts the figures around 4000 lumen.

On my light the illumination on the side switch is very dim and is barely visible, in the photoā€™s in the OP the rubber looks translucent, on mine itā€™s light grey. Even in complete darkness I can hardly see anything. :frowning:

The bezel is extremely tight and wonā€™t budge, I have strong handā€™s too. Iā€™ll try another way.

my side switch is the same i think the side switch wont last long it already feels crapā€¦

Hmm mine feels good and lights up fine.
Seems like you should pm Thorfire here on BLF so they can send you a new part.

They might say, ā€œWhat illuminated switch?ā€ as thereā€™s no mention of it and itā€™s not shown in the photoā€™s on their website, nothing on Banggood either

Hello! I got my S70 from BG and my side switch is also grey and the indicator is barely visible. I if some one knows a place to buy clear replacement cap that would be nice.

For some reason the stock output wasnā€™t that good (turbo 1.7A at tailcap) but after one solder blob turbo went up to 7A and high is now 2A. Much betterā€¦

Received my S70 from BG yesterday. Same problem. The side switch is grey with very poor illumination.

Iā€™m waiting my S70 from BG too.
Do you think itā€™s defective batch of S70s?
On this video https://youtu.be/usVnB_lPFQA?t=546 indication is pretty bright.

It could be. The one on the video is nothing like mine.
On mine there is a crescent shaped faint illumination to the left of the T on the switch and a barely discernible tint to the rest.
Its the only fault that Iā€™ve found though.

Doesnā€™t sound right. Got mine on Amazon and side switch is clear and brightā€¦

So do you have good current on high mode? More than 5A?
What we can do with this tiny defect (i think all flashlights from BG with discount will be with weak side indicator)?

I was wanted buy it on Amazon. But they did not sent S70 in Russia.

I got mine via freemeā€s BangGood discount link.
Clear cover to the side switch that shows the green, orange & red well.
The cells are on charge & I will post a tail cap reading later.
