PD68 Review: Thorfire S70 - XHP70 Monster

Side switch issue. It’s an 11mm switch botton. The retaining ring screwed out with thumb tension on mine. It does have 4 notches for needle nose pliers. Be careful or you’ll stab the electronic switch.

So do you have good current on high mode? More than 5A?
What we can do with this tiny defect (i think all flashlights from BG with discount will be with weak side indicator)?

I don’t have the means to run any tests. Sorry.

Just done a tail cap test with a pair of freshly charged Keeppower 5200 mah IMR”s & got 5.24A.

I got my S70 from BG via freeme discount and all is well. Not as bright as my modded J18 but that will change when somebody is kind enough to post a how to mod of S70 video (so I don’t break anything). Actual lumens seem higher then those on spec sheet, but that is just by eye. Old Lumens has tested turbo at over 4500+ via sphere but I don’t recall any mention of other modes. I am using king kong batteries.

A simple single blob of solder is all that is needed to take the amperage up over 9A Thorfire S50 / microReview + Budget Mod

the S70 is a bit more “complicated” to open+mod as it has no pill

unscrew the battery tube
unscrew the driver retaining ring
tilt the driver in the cavity (watch out not to rip the eswitch wires!)
find the resistors ans place a solder blob over one
remount
done

Nice! Thank you. Is a spring bypass required? Any guesstimate on lumen output after mod? How does the mods effect lower modes?

Cheers!

What exactly did you mean by “liked to de-tune it a bit from where I have it now”?

- Is 9A too hot? Or is it just too much wasted energy?

- And what would you have liked to have targeted … 6A? 7A?

Overall, was it worth hotwiring or would you have been happier with just the simple spring bypasses?

Also just did a tail cap reading with a pair of freshly charged Thorfire 5000 mah INR”s & got 4.94A.

And just did a tail cap reading with 18650 Efest 3100 mah IMR”s & got 5.01A.

Tail cap reading with a pair BASEN 26650 4500 mah IMR , got 5,4 A

stock driver?

Mine is a stock driver.
Surprised that the Basen”s give a higher tail cap reading than my Keeppowers although DMM accuracy will probably be different between myself & Gerrit.
FWIW I am using an Amprobe AM510 with stock leads.

Mine is also a stock driver.

I do my measurements with a Brymen 876s and use 13 AWG wire

Keeppower IMR (black)? Those are pretty average cell imo.

Just killed the clicky switch while trying to bypass the spring… :person_facepalming:
But have already ordered a new one, including some 0.2 ohm sense resistors to mod the driver.

How what did you do?

The switch was still mounted on the PCB while I was soldering on the spring side, suddenly I saw some black stuf flowing through the via’s.
Yes, that was the switch that was melting….

Funny thing is, this wasn’t the first time it happend. :person_facepalming:

To prevent that I always hold the switch by the sides while I solder in the wire. When it approaches too hot to hold it’s time to let it cool down. :stuck_out_tongue:

According to HKJ”s review they are a very good performing cell Test of Keeppower IMR26650 5200mAh (Black) 2015

Also usually no 2 lights will give exactly the same readings even if using the same cells & test equipment.
Have a look at the graphs on post 99 here PD68 Review: Thorfire S70 - XHP70 Monster
A difference in accuracy of the DMM of only 0.3% would give the Keeppowers the same tail cap reading as the Basen.
