Could somebody recommend a battery for my Convoy S2+?

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing OK.

I have had a Convoy S2+ for quite a while, and also vape, due to this I have been using Samsung 25R’s and LG HE4’s for the torch.

The thing is, I understand that a different chemistry battery may be better for my needs, such as runtime, and maybe even a protected cell, if this is needed-but I do not actually understand protected batteries not owning any myself.

I get good runtimes off of the 25R’s and HE4’s, but would like something a little longer lasting, as I use the light for my bike.
The thing is-I don’t have a clue regarding batteries that are not IMR/IMNR, and realise I will not need a battery that is capable of such an amp load as the aforementioned batteries.

I would preferably like to stick to the big manufacturers, although AW or similar would be OK.

So-would a protected cell benefit me for my needs, or not in this case? Also, the largest capacity batteries I currently own in the 18650 format are 3000MAH, LG HG2’s and Samsung 30Q’s-these are all married though, so I can not use them in the torch. I could purchase a couple for the torch if they are a good choice though.

Will I get much more runtime from a battery more suited to the S2+, or is it a good idea to stick with the 25R’s? I understand the 25R’s to be very safe due to my other hobby, their datasheet and test results, but if I can get a better battery that has a lower CDR (EDIT:Lower CDR if it is a better battery for a torch) for my torch/flashlight, that would be great.

Thank you all, Conan.

which version of Convoy S2+ you’re using (like how many amc7135 chips version you bought?)

With your knowledge on vape batteries you can apply the same to flashlights. Protection is unnecessary for S2+. You protect the battery yourself

The 25R is a good cell for a convoy light but if runtime is all you need then the best battery so far is the Sanyo NCR18650GA with 3500mAh

I’d say even a cheaper Panasonic NCR18650B is long lasting enough for a long bike ride

Thank you for your reply :).

That was silly of me to forget, it has 6. I got that version as I felt it offered the best performance for my needs.

If I am honest, I have forgot a lot about flashlights-this is why I asked about protection. I will have a look at the Sanyo NCR18650GA, 3500MAH, that should last well, I tend to find Mid mode is well enough for my needs, so it sounds great.

I will purchase a couple of these for exclusive use for the Convoy S2+.

Thanks for the advice, and all the best, Conan.

Look at the LG MJ1 too. Same performance of the Sanyo GA, but it’s usually cheaper.

If you take care of your cells protection isn’t necessary, as the Convoy has some built-in. But I don’t see any reason to not get a protected cell either (besides slight cost difference).

Thank you for your help.

The LG MJ1 seems to sound like a good choice, 3500MAH, 10A cdr, I will have a look at some graph results comparing the Sanyo to the LG.

I only own a Convoy S2+ that uses 18650’s, and it is more than adequate for my needs, and due to the inbuilt protection of the S2+, is there a benefit to getting protected cells if I will be using them in this torch alone? If there is, I will go for a protected cell, if not, I will likely go for the LG MJ1 after viewing some test results on the battery.

Thanks again, Conan.

Protection is built in unless you reprogram the flashlight differently

What chargers do you use?

The convoy has low voltage protection. Protected 18650s also provide over-voltage and over-current protection in addition to low voltage protection. Doesn’t hurt to get protected. But those who only use very good chargers, know the risks and precautions often go for unprotected cells.

How does the "low-voltage protection" work in the Convoy S2+?

Is it a true "low-voltage cutoff" that turns off the flashlight when the battery gets too low? If so, then there would be little advantage in using a protected battery. This assumes, of course, that you are also using a quality charger.

If it is only a "low-voltage warning," however, that flashes the beam to alert you of a low battery, then it is still possible for the flashlight to over-discharge its battery. This can happen due to accidental activation or operator error. By the latter, of course, I mean putting down your flashlight, and forgetting that it is on!

On the other hand, the maximum current levels your S2+ demand are low enough that there is no reason not use a protected battery.

I would probably buy the protected EVVA version of the Sanyo/Panasonic NCR18650GA 3500mAh battery. Mountain Electronics sells it for a good price. Not sure whether that one is available in the UK. Protected KeepPower 3500mAh is also good.

I doubt the EVVA 18650GA will fit the S+2. I know the EVVA MH1 doesn’t and the 26F protected only fits if you take the label off. Even then it’s tight.

Thanks for the heads up.

I’ve been using protected keepower cells for mine from Gearbest for about a year at the rate of one recharge for each 2 days. No issues whatsoever.

Both EVVA 26F & 18650GA fit in my Convoy S2+. The GA is pretty snug but no problems really. All bought from Richard at MTN.
One nice thing is that protected batteries will never rattle in the S2+.

I don’t own the s2+ but I heard people using “laptop batteries”.
You take an old laptop battery and carefully disassemble it (see youtube for instructions)
and you got some free batteries.

I was able to get between 4-10 free batteries from each laptop

I recognized a lot of them being sold on ebay, charging $4-6 each and not disclosing that they are obviously “recycled”

The Samsung 4.35v 18650D1 is incredible impressive!

4.35V cells sag pretty quick below a high drain cell if you go higher than 2A its not worth it

I had thought that was the opposite. Mountain electronics posted some tests.

My EVVA NCR18650B protected is the only battery that actually fits well in my S2+. I just got some NCR18650B protected cells from IMRbatteries, and they are too wide to fit. I also have an Anker branded Sanyo 3350mAh, and that one is too wide as well. Ugh…

very strange in my Convoy S2+ the 18650B protected fit and still ratling a little
I put additional heatshrink to my unprotected cells to eliminate bad rattling

maybe you bought a fake S2+ with other inner diameter the S2+ was about 19mm?

Is there a way to tell? I bought mine from Banggood.

Usually Banggood delivers the real ones, maybe a batch with other tube diameter

too bad its not easy to expand the tube inner diameter
