Sold Out! O-L Modified Maglites 2D W/3-up XHP50, FET, cosmetics, BEAM SHOTS NOW

Thanks for the heads up, that is good news Old lumens.
There will be some giggly school girl moments indeed!
Looking at the pics I see 7 bezels. Who gets lucky number 7?

Solar, have you ever tried to build as many as 6 duplicated custom lights? When you’re a small guy like us, things have a way of going wrong. So I bought an extra Maglite and dressed it so Justin would have the parts needed in case something happened. Hence, the 7 bezels.

I was wanting to be greedy and have an option on that 7th light if it wasn’t needed, but have since opted out in favor of Justin doing what works out best for him. I’m not perfect, my machining is elementary (having only started in Sept of last year, although I do TRY for perfection it’s fleeting) and so the thought process was to allow culling, if necessary, on the parts.

Making a run of 6 custom lights is not an easy thing to pull off. (Difficult enough to complete one!) Justin is well known as the MagLite Guru around here, so if anyone can do it, well, this project is certainly in the right hands!

Edit: Y’all all know I talk to much already anyway, so I just want to add something. This project has some kind of blessing on it already. How do I know that? Because I have had a great deal of difficulty with the part-off tool and this lathe. Cutting the fins, precisely and to the same depth, is not something I’ve had much luck with (I have had enough trouble parting off that I typically use a hack saw and then clean up the part with a face cut.) But those 5 cuts, in 7 lights, went exceptionally well on this occasion and so I can say, without hesitation, there’s definitely something special going on here!

I might also add, that it’s because of Justin and his challenges that I’m able to do most any of this anyway. I am not a machinist, but I took a 70 yr old high speed steel planer blade and ground a profile onto it to make cuts in these lights, specifically for Justin’s request. And it worked, beautifully! Blessed, I’m telling you this project is Blessed! Y’all are some seriously lucky folks that get these lights…

I certainly feel lucky to be involved, both for the performance potential of the light and for the names involved in building it. I’m pretty handy myself but there’s just something about being able to support other people’s enjoyment of the hobby that I find really rewarding, so I consider myself very lucky to be included in this one.

One question though — I just realized I don’t even own two 26650 cells. I’ve got one, but its in use in another light and I prefer to buy new matched sets for multi-cell lights anyway. So how about a recommendation? I strongly prefer to buy my batteries from US-based sources, so what would you guys recommend from either mtnelectronics or illumn.com? Performance is primary consideration, runtimes come second. Price isn’t an issue.

Pick up a couple of the extremely high capacity Trustfire 32650’s from Richard at mtnelectronics.com They’re 6000mAh and they deliver more current than 26650’s in a couple of fat lights I’ve tested. For example, 3 Efest 26650’s in the 4200mAh capacity in my modified TR-J20 fell over 600 lumens shy of what the 32650’s give. And with that capacity, it’s a no brainer in these lights!

Edit: It might require a small modification at the tail cap to use 2 of those, just remembered that. The 32650’s are longer than “D” cells, as such the tail cap might need to have the very outer diameter bored slightly to allow the cell to fit inside the tail cap, and the spring moved to the bottom of the tail cap instead of sitting on that shelf. I should have thought about that and asked Justin if he wanted me to make that mod while they were here. I can still do it of course, we’re not that far apart both being in Texas… totally up to him.

Yeah, cause Texas is a small little place…

I have no idea how close you two are and wouldn’t ask for anything special, so I’ll leave that up to you two. The stock tailcap is fine with me but I have no tools to machine it out, so I’ll still need that 26650 recommendation if it’s coming that way please.

Efest 4200mAh Dark purple cell. Basen. King Kong Gold in 4000mAh capacity. I find the Basen and Efest 4200 to be directly comparable and top of the heap, although there’s more controversy around the Basen.

Have a look at imrbatteries.com, they’re Houston, Texas based and have great prices and a goodly amount of stock on hand in quite a few options.

Edit: And of course they’re currently out of stock on that 4200mAh Efest! Ugh. Richard at mtnelectronics.com would be my next place to visit, followed by illumn.com if need be.

EditII: Well yeah, relativity being a matter of perspective… 3 hours is comparatively close around these parts.

Most of the higher capacity cells do not make the higher drain needed. It's either high capacity, or high drain and you need high drain, to see the full brightness of the light. They weren't designed for long run times, unless you just simply run them on lower modes. If you run only lower modes, then these would be higher capacity, for longer run times.

Dale, I can barely make one of anything right the first time so I can appreciate the hard work going into these lights. I’m sure you guys did a exceptional job putting these together, that’s why I wanted one.
I just ordered 2 of these. 26650
They seem decent with a good review. Of course the Efest and King Kongs are out of stock.

Thanks guys!!
Chris

There are 7 lights. The 7th was to go to Dale, but he opted to let me sell it, for the money, since there are so many bills right now. The 7th member was the next in line who wanted one, but they were all gone. Easyrr

So, the lights will show 7 instead of 6.

So, not to be a nuisance or troublemaker, but I picked 6 so I’d have the last one — 6 of 6, plus I like the symmetry. It’s not a big deal, kinda silly really, but if Easyrr is willing I’d like to trade with him. Let him have 6 and I’d like 7 of 7.

Please.

But if not it’s okay. No hard feelings.

Just send him a PM and work it out and let me know by Friday, because I will be shipping everything on Saturday. Sorry if it was a big deal, I never thought about that.

@ emarkd - You can have #7.

Thank you all! Sorry to make an issue of something unimportant.

Here's the first ever set of logo marked O-L Maglites. I should have done this a long time ago. It took getting close to death, to make me realize just how much I wanted lights with my name on them, LOL. Well, at least these guys will have something unique and probably never copied again. I always like doing one of a kind lights, but kinda, sorta I like this short run too. Of course, somehow between me and the engraver, it reads Old-Lumen, not Old-Lumens, but I have learned that Murphy lives in my back pocket now and his laws get me just about every time I turn around!. Old-Lumen will have to do. Hope it isn't a deal breaker for anyone.

Lights will be assembled Thursday evening (05/12/2016) and ready to ship on Friday. I have contacted the buyers, so it's a done deal!

Beam Shots tonight after 10PM CST

Whether you like it or not OL your lights are legendary and this logo sits proudly as it should on the above light. Can I send my light back to have it engraved?

Actuyally, just go get it done there, then maybe you can have it done as you like. I won’t tell anyone you had it done.

Just WOW  waiting for the beams

The engraving looks great and this thing sounds like a real photon monster. Thanks a million!

I think it looks amazing! Thank you so much! Paypal sent! I’m so excited to get mine in hand!

Where did the reflectors come from?
