[2016-06-11] Crackdown on rudeness

Will there be any indication that a post was removed, something like?

Or

The atmosphere was so toxic lately i though about giving up on BLF (wich comprises of 99.999% fantastic people), iā€™m probably not alone, this is a very welcomed and smart solution in the spirit of BLF, thanks SB.

Now if we just had a way to mark someoneā€™s behavior as rude when they pull a kreisler.
(he had an ongoing habit of posting rude things and then deleting it an hour later)

Doesnā€™t seem like itā€™s an issue though. I havenā€™t noticed that happening since he left.

I did a BLF search, and I had the opportunity to mark the results as rude, lewd, or conflictive!

I actually came to the thread to mention the exact same thing. ^

Why is the quote button missing from the OP? Or has it never been there? As far as rudeness giving you severe headaches sb, l can you send pills not available over the counter that will fix this as well as other problems with no problem. Cheap to.

As a professional that works in mental health I see general increase in emotional immaturity and poor communication skills among certain groups of people. I have my theories about the cause but no hard data. It seems that the increase in communication methods (i.e social media) has led the a poor ability to communicate with people in real time and desensitization regarding their actions towards others.

Bravo.

Overall my experience with this forum has been positive

Also, please remember that BLF is not Reddit or Slashshot, and I donā€™t want it to turn into that either. So please do not use the Rude! button just because you donā€™t like or donā€™t agree with the post or the poster. It is intended exclusively for use on rude, lewd, or conflictive posts.

Very interesting, marsalla. Doesnā€™t surprise me either, given the way that society in general is turning. So Iā€™m glad to see a lot of people here that are trying to buck the trend.

Regarding the button on the search results, thanks for letting me know, it should be fixed now.

About the quote button, yes, unfortunately it went MIA during the site upgrade, and I canā€™t figure out how to get it back. Sorry!

As for the possibility of a rude original post getting marked many times as rude and being removed, yes, it could happen, although I set higher limits for an original post. But this goes back to what I mentioned earlier about not responding in any way, shape, or form to inappropriate or rude content. Of course, everybodyā€™s opinion of whatā€™s rude and whatā€™s not is different. But if enough people mark an OP as rude and it gets removed, itā€™s a pretty sure bet that the OP was out of line, and therefore any follow-up comments would also be promoting something that is bad for BLF.

I also tweaked the method of Rudeness points expiration:

Originally it would expire a rudeness point 24 hours after it was given. This would make it so that if the user created a rude post and then disappeared for more than 24 hours, (s)he could come back and potentially find a clean 0 rating for rudeness with no indication of how offensive it was.

So I changed it so that now, the overall rudeness score will tick down by 1 every day. This change has been reflected in the OP.

This ā€˜rudeā€™ button is a nice antidote to rude posts by rude ā€˜membersā€™ !

Kudos to our admin for being so patient and reasonableā€¦.letā€™s all hope they all get the message and not abuse the patience of SB.

I just tried marking one of my old posts as rude, but got a ā€œwebsite has encountered an unexpected error messageā€, maybe it was just from the load of people trying it, but fyi.

However, the reason I was trying it was to see if there was a way to easily see which posts were marked rude and which ones Iā€™ve marked rude so corrections can be made in case it was updated by the poster?

It is also important to note that all of these labels like ā€œrudeā€ and ā€œtrollā€ are used to silence those who choose to dissent from majority opinion. So if you think differently, you must be rude or a troll.

Oops, sorry, looks like I broke it. Should be working now.

This would be a lot more difficult to implement on a technical level, but itā€™s definitely not a bad idea.

Now, ah, could the button appear on the ads as well?
Iā€™d like to tag the whatchacallit MilitaryMonster700 adsā€¦.

I think Iā€™m just joking, but these days with smart coders I can never tell in advance whether Iā€™m joking or wishing in the presence of a wizard, and Iā€™m often surprised by what can be made to work.

This is an important point. One of the major instigating factors of fights here is when people start throwing around insults and labels like that. So the original post in this thread tries to be very clear; if you feel somebody is out of line, be it ā€œnormalā€ rudeness or ā€œtrollishā€ rudeness, please refrain from calling them out, and donā€™t have any interaction whatsoever with the person. Instead, hit the Rude! button and contact me if itā€™s an extreme case or becoming a pattern and I donā€™t notice it.

But please also keep in mind this recent addition I made to the original post:

No smoke without fire.

Youā€™re definitely not alone, I even notice some being unnecessarily rude to you and theyā€™ll get the button when itā€™s justified.

Itā€™s a good deterrent.

 Well actually yes, you are in the presence of the Google wizardry, which usually targets relevant ads, but occasionally gets them dead wrong. Sorry about that, those are ads that Google personalizes for you, and no two people get the exact same set of Google ads, and I donā€™t have any real control over what they serve up for you. With that being said, if you continue to see a really annoying or really inappropriate Google ad on this site please let me know and I can block that advertiser. The emphasis being on ā€œreallyā€, because Iā€™d prefer not to be deluged with more administrative tasks.

Sorry thatā€™s not possible at the moment. In retrospect I guess this is a fairly important feature for this system to work better. Iā€™ll see what I can do.

I wonder if TKā€™s ā€˜killfileā€™ could also be implemented as a button.

Because I think thereā€™s, for most of us, some sort of comment that (while not ā€˜rudeā€™) hits a hot button.

And some folks do enjoy banging on their favorite buttons to see who gets upset, vs. who applauds.

ā€œā€¦ this flashlight fries the craven illiberal hearts of lotus eatersā€¦ā€¦

That sort of thing. It means nothing but it incorporates a few buttons that might touch tender spots in someone who sees a buzzword.

Those are the sorts of posts where a ā€œdonā€™t want to see this ever againā€ button would be most helpful.

Yeah, I can edit the CSS in TKā€™s ā€œafter darkā€ to enable the feature now. I do. Works great.

But how many among us who see something that pisses us off react by immediately wanting to go copy and paste a bit of code so we donā€™t have to get pissed off?

Backing away is, you know, the right thing to do. Itā€™s also the difficult thing to do.
