[2016-06-11] Crackdown on rudeness

Still 0/10 YAY

SB please do not feel rushed a whole new category is way too much work, I thought just remove “sticky” tag

Oh man I am do happy we did something for you! So much deserved!

Are you back to –1 RC?

I’m the proud owner of 6 on the rudeness scale. It was 7 yesterday after I posted an emotional comment about the massacre in Florida by a deranged ISIS sympathizer. I guess I did go a little overboard with my anger, or did I?

Personally, I consider swearing to be rude no matter the emotional level or the amount I agree or disagree with what you said. I’m sure a few of those 7 came from that alone. fyi

swearing or racist posts will be my primary use of the “Rude!” button.

question: If the owner of a “Rude” post deletes said post, does that remove the Rude! votes from his counter, or do they remain?

I understood, and deleted my post and opologised to those I might have offended

Mine remained

In 6 days they will be gone. SB knows your not a problem poster so i don’t think there is any harm done

They remain. Since the rudeness counter can’t trigger automated account blockage, it’s not really a problem per se if the counter is temporarily high. It’s mainly intended for the majority of our members that really do care about getting along with others, so they can be aware of how their posts are being perceived by others and make amends if necessary.

 Thanks Sharpie!

Yes, good idea. I’ve been thinking over the technical path toward implementing this functionality too.

I have not marked anything “rude” yet, so it wasn’t me. But I did read the post you are referring to and considered trying out the feature. What you did was a general rules violation, not necessarily rule #1, but it was all the others. I decided against pressing the button. But some people did and you have been inquiring why ever since. That’s why.

The last thing I want to do is to offend anybody. I realize sometimes my emotions get the best of me when it comes to violence towards innocent people, especially in the name of religion. I’ll do my best in the future to control my emotions without swearing.

If Swearing is rude lol I’d suggest never take a holiday to certain parts of Australia lol! We have some of finest bogans in the world. (red necks or yokels) which ever you prefer lol

> overboard with my anger, or did I?

I didn’t click the ‘rude’ button but for whatever it’s worth, when I saw a candidate’s talking point — a controversial one —
I thought that might not work well in this thread where people are asked to stay nonpolitical.

Talking points will only get harder to self-filter til the election, as what seems obvious to one of us may seem mistaken to someone else.

There’s no “backing away slowly with no response” button.

But it’s hard to say “Gosh will Darn this person to Heck” with a straight face!

I think swearing, especially online, is one of those areas that some folks are always going to be more comfortable with than others. For me personally, if the kid is old enough to be here, or even old enough to be able to read over my shoulder, then they probably already know those words anyway and I don’t worry too much about them reading them online. Those words are out there, in the world, and as a parent I think its futile to try and shield my kids from them. Video sites scare me a lot more than text-based forums.

So yeah, personally, I swear online sometimes. I’ve even done it here. But then I swear in real life sometimes, too. My online personality and my real-life personality are in sync. Honestly I think its kinda silly how we give so much more power to some words than others, even when they mean the same exact thing. So If any of you ever meet me in real life you know exactly what to expect

All that is kinda beside the point though, because this place isn’t a democracy and swearing is clearly against the rules. So while I personally don’t find it rude, it is inappropriate here by decree and I can see how others may choose to click that button because of it.

I get it. Even though I’m 64, I’m still in the learning mode.

i LOVE the idea of a NICE (or THANKS) button!

-> Members collect “thanks” for helpful comments or good reviews - anything that helps the community
-> that number should be be public below the Username so anyone (especially newbees) can easy identify our heroes
-> only 5 (or10) “nice” can be given per user and day
-> a list of “nicest posts of the day/week/month/all times” would be great

Personally it has nothing to do with kids (I don’t have any). I just don’t like to see it myself. I won’t go into my philosophical reasons for that because it would definitely be divisive.

That being said, I probably wouldn’t hit the Rude button anyways if it wasn’t against the rules like emarkd said. I won’t usually fault people for staying within the rules. On the flip side, if there wasn’t a rule and profanity was the norm, I wouldn’t be here to start with.

………………….

In regards to the nice button, I’d fear Rude people using it to get a lot of “Nice” in their tank then use that to be really awful in a couple of posts without going in the red so to speak, or having multiple accounts to up their Nice level. As long as SB still gets notified when a post is especially rude, I suppose a “nice” button would bring an air of positivity.

Yea a button opposite the Rude button is just going to justify rude behavior.
