[2016-06-11] Crackdown on rudeness

For those who donā€™t mind using a browser extension, you can paste this in to limit the maximum nesting level of quotes. Use the ā€œimportā€ feature in the ā€œStylishā€ extension.

@-moz-document domain("budgetlightforum.com") {
/* hide quotes deeper than 3 levels */
blockquote.quote-msg blockquote.quote-msg blockquote.quote-msg blockquote.quote-msg {
    display: none !important;
}
}

ā€¦ or install the same thing from the userstyles site: BLF limit quote depth (3) | Userstyles.org

I think thatā€™s an acceptable compromise. Can you change the text so that ā€œrudenessā€ only appears once, such as ā€œ0/10 rudenessā€?

Iā€™ll have to mess around with the underlying code a bit (which I didnā€™t write), but thatā€™s a possibility. Thanks!

Now i know what rude means!

Was hoping and waiting for something like that in the time of the cometa double troubleā€¦
On the other hand,i have 0 out of 10 - so what does it mean?

Good idea SB! Go on like this ā€¦

It means youā€™re quite terrible at being rude! :stuck_out_tongue:

I demand a recount! :laughing:

sure

I am really liking the new ā€œrude buttonā€ feature. It levels the field for all members.
Rude is rude whether one is a seasoned BLF member, a one day old new person, or anywhere in between.

Since this feature was implemented I have noticed there has been an almost immediate change in the posting behavior of some in all three of those categories.
[ I would fall into the ā€œin betweenā€ member myselfā€¦ā€¦ in between seasoned and new. :wink: ]

I like the fact that each individual can see their ā€œrudeness quotientā€. Even though it has shrunk to super small, I hope it does remain visible to the individual.

I think a ā€œthank youā€ or ā€œ+1ā€ button at the bottom of a post would give others the option to acknowledge a post they wanted to without necessarily having to quote it and reply. Thus keeping threads cleaner.

I also think this should be unique to each post and not combined for a cumulative total or go toward karma points.
That only has the potential to turn things into a circus and / or a popularity contest.

These are my thoughts on the matter. YMMV
.

Also, what pilotdog68 said below sums it up perfectlyā€¦ā€¦.

I use my tablet a lot when on BLF. Real easy to accidentally hit that button then because of touch screen feature and small size. Maybe make the rudeness button a two stage design. After you hit the button asking are you sure you wish to use this feature?

It already has that feature. :slight_smile:

Glad to hear that. :+1: :slight_smile:

I continue to think this is a silly and unnecessary addition for a forum. I notice how silly it is every time I see the counter that shows 0 rudeness/10 rudeness. lulz!

Check your counter again. I just marked your comment as rude. :stuck_out_tongue:

Itā€™s nice that we can see which posts were marked rude. Iā€™d like to know who marked which posts rude.

How do we see which posts are marked rude Yeah, Iā€™d like to know that too.

edit: never mind, I found it RIGHT HERE

At the risk of sounding like a brown noser, the above is perhaps a definitive description of someone who makes a good moderator. As with politicians, anyone who actually WANTS the job, is probably not the right person for the job. This system (the ā€˜Rudeā€™ button) that you have set up, offloads a little bit of the burden onto the rest of us, and reminds ALL of us to keep our attitudes in check.

I strongly disagree with those who claim that ā€œlabels like ā€œrudeā€ and ā€œtrollā€ are used to silence those who choose to dissent from majority opinionā€. While they certainly CAN be used in that way, an objective observer can see through throwing labels around. On the other side of the same coin, dissent can be (and in fact MUST be, to be taken seriously) expressed clearly WITHOUT the use of rude and trollish behavior.

Sb, I think this is a great way to help moderate without active moderating. I respect the freedom allowed here and do my best to never take it for granted. Iā€™ve said before though that a group of people this enthusiastic about any particular thing is going to have plenty of passionate people. We enthusiasts do get fired up on a topic from time to time and say too much or go too far. I know I have. This is a good way for people to see what does and doesnā€™t offend. It also embraces the cultural and ethnic diversity of our forum. Some of our members could easily offend someone out of lack of English skills. This will be helpful there too.

The effectiveness of this has already showed itā€™s worth. Just a few weeks ago things were escalating to uncomfortable levels in a few threads. I saw a marked turning point and behavioral shift back towards the friendly helpful BLF I love. I didnā€™t realize you had put this in place until just a few days ago and just found this thread last night. Well done once again my friend. Bravo! :+1: :beer:

Absolutely. If you wouldnā€™t mind please mark one of my posts rude. Iā€™d like to see this system in action. I assume you realize I marked yours just having as a bit of fun to test the system. :slight_smile:

Edit: I meant that I like that people can see which of their posts was marked rude, not that who marked it should be shown. Who flagged what absolutely needs to be anonymous to all but SB.

Definitely not. :slight_smile: Sorry, but that would undoubtedly start feuds.

Hi J-Dub74, hereā€™s the link to see your posts that were flagged, if any:

Sorry I havenā€™t figured out a way yet to make this menu link only appear for logged-in users, so itā€™s not on the left-hand column yet.
