[2016-06-11] Crackdown on rudeness

Thanks SB. I realize now that I saw that yesterday.

From the thanks button poll / thread.
At the risk of belaboring the point, I’d like to remind everyone once more that the Rude! button should not be used to express disagreement or disinterest in the post, or to express dislike of the poster. It’s only meant for rude, lewd, or conflictive posts. Another synonym for this button would be “Inappropriate”.
Perhaps it would be useful to add that to the Rude! confirmation page. Especially if you suspect that some people are using it like that. Though, I can see that it might feel a little long with that added.

It’s working as is now, sb is wise to let it settle down.

“If you keep fiddling with it, you’ll eventually break it.” — mothers, everywhere

Basically this is how the Rude! button works. I try to deal with problematic users on a case-by-case basis, so there are no hard and fast rules about X number of Rude! hits = ban, but it’s always a last-recourse option.

I love these slippery slope arguments, soon we will be arguing that if we allow grass to grow then aliens will be coming to enslave the human race. Bit of a stretch, and there are two or three steps missing, but those aliens are coming

Your right, no need for it.

:+1:
Yes and amen!
.

I’m still reading, so maybe someone else has already mentioned this, but I’d think making the Rudeness Meter itself clickable, linked to /my-problem-posts might be neat.

Good idea! Not sure how easy it will be to do technically though.

I can mark my own posts as SPAM, but I cannot mark them as Rude...

Do I have too much time on my hands or what?

Yes

Schelling fences.

Fascinating. Lately i have been thinking about path dependence, the last time i read the wikipedia article it was very confined in its implications. If A leads to B leads to C and in general we aim for improvement of the human condition then it explains why the last several millennia has shown progress, though very slow and very painful. We also have to contend with those who prefer to reverse progress that has been made.
I think this Schelling fence is overthinking, we do not have to define irrationality as an arbitrary point, we can instead go by logic, by thinking ahead one can figure out how much sleep one needs, how long it takes to fall asleep on average and wake up/getting ready and transport to work and establish a bed time. Going further one can use melatonin or blue light blocking glasses to advance the body clock and feel tired earlier, though i would typically only suggest this if medically indicated. I suspect this hypothetical person is a night owl and not a morning lark

I don’t either but I love the idea and if anyone can pull it off, you can. Perfect way to access your own problem posts.
I also wanted to give you a tip-of-the-hat SB for the way the rudeness meter is displayed now. :face_with_monocle:
When I stayed up way too late reading the 300 or so posts as of last night when I found this thread I saw a few people were disturbed by being smacked in the face with a rudeness meter while browsing BLF…
I must admit that concerned me too while reading about it. You’ve changed it since that statement was made though. The positioning, scale and color choice you’ve adjusted it to make it all but invisible now while “BLFing” at least as a non-offender. Just another aspect of this move that has been well thought out and expertly executed. I wish I lived close enough to truly buy you a beer. :+1:

:person_facepalming: means oh good grief, :LOSER: is the insult one(right hand Palm out, 3 fingers curled).

I think facepalm :person_facepalming: is up for interpretation. To me it means that you find something completely absurd, ridiculous. And by extension the person who said such a thing, might be an idiot. If you wish to take it that way.
And honestly I tend to see it that way myself.

But I do kind of like our new facepalm simley. :innocent:
I just wish we didn’t have to lose our confused one Which seemed to happen at the same time as when facepalm and thumbs-up appeared. Poor confused, he’s been banished along with santa and my favorite ghost

I think I have only :person_facepalming: my own posts so far, I tend to see it as the fail or absurd emoji depending on context. I have been using :sushi: a bit lately, someone possibly Halo… said it never gets used so I thought it would be good to work it into conversation more often, not that sushi makes any sense but it is tasty.

If Santa is true to form he will return in about 6 months

“She was looking kinda dumb
With her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an ‘L’ on her forehead…”

A facepalm (sometimes also face-palm or face palm) is the physical gesture of placing one’s hand flat across one’s face or lowering one’s face into one’s hand or hands, covering or closing the eyes. The gesture is often exaggerated by giving the motion more force and making a slapping noise when the hand comes in contact with the face. The gesture is found in many cultures as a display of frustration, disappointment, exasperation, embarrassment, horror,[2] shock, surprise, exhaustion, sarcasm or incredulous disbelief.[3]

I like the ” :person_facepalming: “. I mainly use it in PM’s to friends in relation to myself, concerning something I have said or done…
