Cree changed production process for XP-G2 emitters!

This confirms one of mine theory I talked into XP-G3 thread and that was about neatly sliced XP-G3 vs de domed G3 emitter where I claimed that there should not be great difference between this methods.

So sliced(neatly sliced as low sliced as possible) vs de domed = very low advantage onto pure de domed one.

Indeed, slicing is needed especialy in b158 look loke hosts where ppl usualy swap the emitter/driver pill on demand…with an IR or red/green for instance

Ofc you can always use a HI in those……IF they dont die that fast as they do :)…especialy those tints with lower K rate( 4500 and under.
By default they are OK though…yet after 5amps the sillicone layer near the bond wires starts burning or they just suddenly die

Well since S4 2C is only available in “new improved version” I played a little with remaining old XP-G2 S2 1A emitters…

And guess what?

One of them hit 5.8A!(checked several times with pause on unmistakable Uni-t clamp meter) Angry blue appeared on half of emitter (I did not fried it… just a second or two), and that is something I never saw with XP-G2 emitters… Samsung 30Q used.

Then I had to change Djozz FET driver bypassed spring for original UF 1503 high resistance spring (reading 5.4A after), and unsolder tail switch bypass wire, and angry blue disappeared for 200 kcd results in UF1503( not bad but nothing special).

First time I had to enhance resistance on Djozz FET drivers… I don’t know why but it was funny to me  Am I nerd?

What I know now that Djozz FET driver takes out maximum out of LED and battery if done properly (filled vias on AK-47 + bypass from that vias to top of the chosen driver spring(FT carobronze) gives direct + contact with battery and led)

has anyone tested those : http://intl-outdoor.com/noctigon-xp16-v2-mcpcb-cree-xpg2-s3-3d-led-p-846.html if they are old style ?

If the reel information picture is correct and updated: the package date of the S3 3D is april2015, while the S4 2B (that is currently new style at intl-outdoor) has an earlier packaging date of februari 2015.

Djozz,

Hope you’ll test and find even better emitter than old style G2 S4 2B

I can do that no better than anyone else: if the led has the old-style appearance, it will have the old-style throw increase upon dedoming, cooler leds a bit more improvement than warmer leds.

I actually looking forward on your future findings of emitter that will be better for throw than old series of g2 emitters.

Maybe other LED manufacturers like Osram, Philips, Samsung etc. can make something good.

Osram for example has the best and the brightest 850NM and 940NM led on the market. So they are capable of making something good for sure.

Osram’s top die illuminance led is the 3rd gen. Oslon Square, FmC has gone at great length trying to dedome it and checking throw, without getting close to the old style S4 2B.

The 3rd gen Oslon’s came very close (~7%), & would be a suitable replacement, if they could be easily dedomed.

I recently came across these, which appear to be binned higher that the 3rd gen’s that we have tested.

I have bought a small quantity to test, but they pose the same dedoming problem.

I remembered that wrong, sorry, so it is close.
Thanks for the good work, FmC !

I am looking forward to see this one in action… Neatly slice should also be good method.

Please keep us informed

And you Djozz of corse

Is there a feedback to Cree?
If this site,(club) here is wholeheartedly against the new batches products, isn’t bad for them?

It has been said before: We are NOT Cree’s target customer, and we are NOT even a large portion of their sales worldwide. If they were to care about us, it would be out of the kindness of their hearts, because we don’t have enough financial pull to matter.

Theodor41,

I would like to tell them to return production process to previous state but who am I and who we are??? That is real question….

Maybe the best answer is from DAVIDEF:

Any news on Osram Oslon’s ?

The new S4 2B that you tested had a 30% drop in lux, but the one that I tested had much less than that, I would estimate within 10 or 15% of the old S4.

Like I said, there seems to be a large variation in Vf for the new S4. If you get one with a lower Vf like I did, the performance is quite close to the old S4.

I am not the only one…

I would not recommend new S4 2B to anyone… But if people want to try than why not? Myself and quite a few forum members here are heavily disappointed with this emitter.

But luckily and thanks to Wkhchin81 i managed to get some of good old XP-G3 S3 2B emitters so I’ll reply soon how they performed.

I have some of them too , but I’m out of hosts and time right now :stuck_out_tongue:

My diy test should be not relevant to anyone but Djozz test is different story:
