Build/Mod: Zoomie with Brynite B158B host (wider flood mod)

Yeah, I promised Martin I would send him the link to my first build with impressions, so I’ll do it today even though you have, and suggest a B158C

Yes. I sent an email to an email adress I found on Brynite’s website and asked. I was contacted by Martin, a very good person to deal with. He can be reached at ledflashlight@brinyte.net.

Hi Mike ,

You have done a great job. It has drawed our boss’s attention, I will translate the entire article to my boss and engineers and wait to see whether there will be any change in our future flashlights.

You know we really have a short product line on photography light on land, even we have several photography flashlights for diving, but we really have no such a flashlight which is used in photography on land.

You showed us a direction of how to design our next flashlight. We will take in some of your experience.

Thank you for your advancing spirit and effort.

Sellers that actually follows BLF user experiences.

Well done Brinyte… If you can make even floodier B158B then why not? Wider beam for even more versatility

Hi there Martin.

I just sent an email with some photos and more detailed explanation of the suggested changes for the host (or new model B158C maybe?). Let us know if it is possible and if there would be a minimum order requirement to make a batch. Others here at BLF might be interested in such hosts or lights.

Idk, but it seems that making a specialized or extended pill would be the easiest way to do it, but there may be more to it than I am seeing…

If they move the cell this 8mm closer to the front as well could that not make the length 8mm shorter?

Yep, the specialized extended pill is the easiest. kiriba-ru is making it for me

This is what I suggested:

Add 8mm of threading to the inner tube, and remove 8mm of the fat part to keep same length on inner tube. Original on top, a crappy photo edit of what I’d like it to look like on the bottom:

For this to work the outer tube has to be 8mm shorter. Original on top, another crappy photo edit on the bottom.

The light will only be 8mm shorter when it’s in full flood. Otherwise length would be the same.

Of coarse maybe Brynite might prefer to make the extended pill and offer it as a separate part for flood extension. Personally I’d rather see changes to the host, would keep weight down a bit, especially if using kiriba-ru’s original copper pill vs extended copper pill, but I’d understand them if they preferred making a new pill instead of a new host.

Ok. I see. I was thinking they would have to extend the Tailcap spring and leave the length the same. If they shortened the body and extended the threads, I agree that would me nice.

I think you are onto something with the extended floody pills. If kiriba-ru makes some, I am in for 2. I have also contacted Brinyte to get my hands on a couple B158B hosts. Your innovation is much appreciated.

Thanks for you suggestion, sir. Our boss has seen this post and this post gave us an inspiration, and we might consider designing flashlights with floodier beam light in the near future.

Cool. I would think that Kiriba-ru would be happy to offer them to others, but that’s for kiriba-ru to announce. I am unable to do a larger buy and then distribute as I’ll be gone for three months starting next week. My pills will be sent to a relative where they will be waiting for my return in November.

I received my B158 host today, and swapped the pill & reverse clicky switch from my B158. First impressions are great. I am definitely a fan of this host. It may even surpass my Jax Z1, which is saying a lot!

It is great to know you have received your light host, it is long journey. Maybe we should have chosen DHL instead. I am eager to see what will happen with your B158B host.

Mike C, let’s begin by saying that I didn’t understand everything you’ve done as I’m still a flashaholic newbie :stuck_out_tongue: , but I got the total picture and I must say it’s a great one! :+1:

I’d like to understand one thing:
Was it necessary to use that driver retaining ring (1st and 2nd pic at your OP) in order to center the 16mm Noctingon? Using only the plastic ring (4th pic) wouldn’t center the led on the star good enough?
I’m asking because I want to mod my B158 (1st mod I’m gonna do  ) and it’s the first time that I’ve read something like that regarding B158’s moding. I’ve also checked that mhanlen doesn’t do something like that at his mod video (3’50”–4’00”).

A piece of copper wire bent into a circle would do as well. Anything of even and correct dimension would work. I suspect the driver ring was just convenient.

Thanks for your answer.
I understand what you mean, but my question is if it’s really necessary to use something in order to center the 16mm star, cause mhanlen didn’t show something like that in his mod video and Mike C’s post was the first time I’ve read about it.

For me it was. A 16mm Noctigon had way too much clearance. I guess one could use adhesive to stick it in place and manually center it, but that kind of work is nothing I want to do myself.

Got it. Thanks.

A 20 mm round mcpcb might just fit and self center.

Nope. As written in OP, it doesn’t fit.
