BLF Newb 1st purchase check in please

According to pilotdog68s test the short tube does fit the EE.

I recently got these two lights from Simon:

Convoy S2+ Gray, T6 4C, 7135x8, mode option 2 (low, mid, high)
Convoy M1, T6 4C, 7135x8, mode option 2 (low, mid, high)

Here are my first impressions:

  1. I wish I ordered S2+ in black. The gray looks very good on it’s own, but standing next to absolutely gorgeous matte black of M1 - there is no contest.
  2. I am glad I ordered both lights with 7135x8 driver. The high mode is extremely useful, even if you can’t use for more than 5 minutes on S2+ because of the heat.
  3. The 4C tint looks very nice. I would like to compare it to 3B in the future to see which I like better. That said, the tint is a bit different on my two lights (bin variation?).
  4. I am glad I ordered both lights with mode option 2 (low, mid, high), I don’t need blinking modes, and single blink on low to switch groups would be annoying.

Of the two lights I like M1 more. If you don’t mind slightly larger size - get M1. Better yet, get both of them, and C8 XP-L HI too, while you are at it (that’s what I am getting next).

I think you’ll be happy with your purchases. I always go for the most powerful version and use lower modes if needed. Some people don’t recommend charging internally because its charging in a sealed tube and if something goes wrong. Potential bad things. But if it has a good cc CV algorithm and over charge protection should be fine. I charge my nitenumen with on board charging and my handaccu with the on board charging. And I charge my vape unit evod pro with the onboard charging. Never a issue. Wouldn’t hurt to check the charged battery with a multimeter to see where it terminates at. I trust technology today for the most part. And the newer imr and inr battery chemistries are about impossible to make blow up. Unless you throw them in a fire. They just vent. Basically your vaping batteries of today. The older ICR were the ones with most of the issues. Stay away from any batteries with fire in the name and you’ll be good.

The eagle eye x6 and convoy c8 are nice lights as well. They are a little larger. There are times I use my x6 as my every day carry. One of my favorite lights. And during winter months a c8 fits comfortable in a hoody or jacket pocket. There are some people here who will build you a complete modded light.

Mostly agree with Speed4goal, with the exception of the robust 32650. The TrustFire 6000mAh 32650 is the best one available hands down, even outperforming most of the top 26650’s. But that’s the only TrustFire I’ll buy.

Chances are that if a cell vented inside a light it’d blow out the switch. Don’t know. But I’m a bit leery of taking the chance myself.

You are fortunate to have Convoy as some of your first purchases. I ended up here looking to mod some of my junk lights. In the end it’s not worth it when you can buy a Convoy for less with genuine emitters. I am still the type of person that likes to do things myself & fortunately Convoy offers Hosts to do as you wish.

Just bought an X2R today. Will prolly end up as a gift to someone or an emergency light because of its charging possibilities.
Threw in an X6 host cause I really like my Astro SS size and power potential.

Welcome to the forum!

You’ll be happy with what you bought, but for just 2x more you also could have also gotten a C8 to see which one you like better. And they would have arrived at the same time and in the same package. The S2+ is more of a flood beam, the C8 has more throw to “reach out” there, more of like a “classic” flashlight beam with a hotspot for reach and spill for in close. See how this works? “Now would I like this more?”. It’s not too late to order one.

I have an S2+ in grey and it’s just classy and is one of my EDC lights. The other EDC is a C8 but the S2+ is the easiest to get to.

OK, so just poop on it all after the S2+ and C8 and get an L6. Trust me, you’ll love the thing, just maybe not the size and even that can be worked on as far as carrying it goes and to get it out of the hand to free it up (I’ll call it cross body “purse” carry). The L6 has low modes for huge runtimes and close range usability, and still can reach out well over 100 yards for identification, and to blind in closer if that’s required. It’s close to the perfect light at this time. It’s my night time chore light and to investigate things that go bump in the night here in rural Maine USA. I used it just last night for vermin removal, as I needed two hands free for another tool, but we don’t need to go there.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone…. yes I have been eyeballing other lights, mostly just Convoy so far though as there seems to be a consensus of great value.

Are you one of “those guys” Speed4goal?

Tell you what, I’ll send you my new EE XR2 packed full of BC bud and you send it back with a triple Nichia 219B, TIR lens, copper heatsink and I am afraid I haven’t learned enough about drivers yet to know what to ask for but I trust your discretion….

Whats BC Bud? Is that a new driver I’ve not yet heard of?

Welcome to BLF Fesso :+1:

It seems like you’re hooked already  but don’t worry and stay calm- that will keep the peace at home till Mama asks why the credit card bill is so high :open_mouth: It’s a great hobby and glad you’re with us.

Phil

Welcome to “The Addiction” & BLF ‘Fesso’!! Good luck with keeping it under control… you’ll probably need it. Cause no truer word were ever spoken than those above……

S2+ is a good choice. In fact most of the Convoy line are good choices, I’m sure you’ll find that out for yourself before to long though. :money_mouth_face: :money_mouth_face:

Be sure to not overlook the M1…. it is a really nice little light.

Hey Speed, did you mod your X6 or keep it stock. If you modded it what did you do?
I was about to order an X6, I like the form factor more than the M1. I came across this thread.

LOoks like if this comes to fruition it might be worth the wait.

Man-0-Man how I wish I was around a year ago. I would have loved to get the that Copper/Aluminum X6/X5 set…. the copper looks so very nice ! I guess I could keep an eye on the classifieds….

Ok, maybe I am getting ahead of myself here but I was thinking instead of buying a Eagle Eye X6 from Gearbest maybe I should try to build one up from a host. I think I just ordered 2 EE X6 heatsinks from user “Nitro”. I think I would need that right?

Hey Dale, if you are still reading this thread can you point me to an easy to follow build thread for a triple emitter EE X6? I noticed you mention them on a few threads….

EDIT: I saw your X6 shootout thread but I can’t seem to find a clear step by step build thread anywhere… is there such a thing?

I really really like the form factor of the X6, it’s a cool looking light…
I like the idea of building up a light even though I really don’t know shit about the components yet especially all the driver options…. Am I crazy to try this as my first “mod”? I am certain the technical resources are here… it’s just a matter of sifting through all the information and hoping for answers to my noob questions…

I built my own LED reef aquarium light a few years ago so I am somewhat competent at soldering and electronics ect….

Thanks

Just read your comment, I’m not one of those guys yet who would be comfortable modding a light for someone else. But, if you talk to db custom, or djburke they will get you taken care of. Db has built more triples then anyone I’ve seen on here. And built a collection of 160 lights none stock. He has built 4 lights for me so far.

DJ Burke has a thread on here called c8 build services. He will fully build you a c8 decked out for around $35 including shipping. Even cheaper if you supply the host. I’m sure there are others on here that would be happy to throw one together for you. People are real friendly on blf and pretty much help people out for not much more then the price of parts.

PS you know you can build a triple s2 there are pretty common now a days. And x6 triples. One of those guys on here will get you taken care of. But if your already wanting to build triples and such invest in some high drain unprotected batteries.

I could recommend some drivers just depends on what direction you want to go with the light. But dB is king of the x6 provably built 60-70 of them send him a pm and he can probably walk you through the mod if you wanted to do it yourself

I LOVE the Eagle Eye X6. I also really like making triples from it. You’ll need a 32mm Noctigon from Intl-Outdoor, these have a center pad as well but I drill through that for the wires to come up through from the driver. The pads are XP sized so XP-G2, XP-G3, XP-L or XP-L HI, even the Nichia 219B or 219C. You can get the 32mm mcpcb from Richard pre-loaded with your emitter choice, as you can get the FET driver from him as well.

The 32mm mcpcb is a bit too big, it needs to be filed down to 31.7mm to fit in the X6, this is not very much taken off and can be accomplished in a few minutes with a large file or a belt sander. Careful if you go the sander route, easy to go too far or get it out of round. I like to lay a file on the table and run the mcpcb down it’s length while rotating slightly, change grip at the end and continue around several times til it fits. On a belt sander it’s best to have the bare mcpcb as it will get much hotter, much faster and it helps to be able to dunk it in water. Edit: Alternatively you can drill the center hole first, put a machine screw through the hole and hold it snug with a washer and nut, then mount it in a drill to spin it like a lathe, this will help keep it true, whether using a file or sandpaper or even a belt sander or rotary tool. Edit II: Tapping the center hole to match your choice of screw will help ensure you have it rotating true and not wobbling. It’s obviously quite important to get the hole as centered as possible if you are going to be using it to spin up the mcpcb to file the outer diameter to fit the X6.

You’ll also need a Ledil CUTE-3 35mm optic, Richard has these as well, so once you have the spacer from Nitro you can get the rest from Richard or piece-meal it out from different vendors. Intl-Outdoor might actually have the CUTE-3, haven’t looked in a while.

With XP-L HI’s you’ll get the most output and the result is a tremendous amount of light from such a small host. Nitecore claims their TM03 makes the most lumens from a single cell, but they’re wrong, the X6 Triple slays it! lol (I built a Titanium X6 with a Quad CUTE-4 optic and Nichia 219C emitters that makes over 4000 lumens. This is much more difficult as there is no mcpcb to use so it takes individual components and some lining up)

One day I wouldn’t be surprised if you get a offer to work for nitecore or thrunite or something

Maybe if I showed em my 10,000+ lumen lights after all their bragging about a measely 2800 or 3000 they’d wake up? My TrustFire TR-J20 is making right at 15,000 lumens. Sorry, 2800 is hard to get excited about these days. I’ve built Quad X5’s that made a bit over 3000 on a 14500 cell. Got a friend up in Connecticut that goes camping with a little X5 I built for him, has run black bears out of camp with it. Game warden was quite impressed. lol

My word……………… :+1:

You got any threads out there about some of these “monsters” Dale??

My, what big eyes you have! :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: Are you aware that Richard builds the biggest monsters anywhere? He built an TR-J20 that made over 30,000 lumens! (34,000, I think it was) He replaced the 12 XM-L emitters with 12 XHP-50’s. Freak, really.

I was actually just kidding Speed. Running with your joke from the Canadian battery source thread…

Thanks for your suggestions… so much to absorb here.
