This knife is new at Manafont. For those who don't know, the Fallkniven F1 is one of the most highly regarded bush knives around. Now this knife on manafont looks identical to it, laminated blade and all. The photos of both knife and holsters are identical making me think they used real F1 pictures. The measurements listed are the same as well.
I emailed them about it because if the photos are of the 'replica' then for $13 it is definitely worth a look!
What kind of input/thoughts do you guys have for me?
That company deserves no business at all. Aside from the knife you linked to, they also ripoff off (and freely use the names) of Spyderco, Columbia River and SOG...thats just with 30 seconds of looking. Cheap flea market ripoffs of real knives.
The risk of receiving a crappy knife is pretty high. For that kind of money I would rather buy a Mora. This is reminding me a lot of my fake Buck , which is never used, but I keep it as reminder to never buy fake knives again.
I believe I have the knife you linked, though I got it from PA. Mine came with a fake leather sheath, you can take a look here (pictures show the actual item). The look actually is nice and it has a full tang (not x-rayed this time, but tested with a magnet). The blade is a tad thinner than 4 mm and has a full flat grind, other than that it looks and feels almost like the real thing. Don't know yet how it holds the edge yet but the handle is fine and I expect the knife will do its job well.
Re ripoff vs real: Funny thing is that I have quite a few "real" knives from Gerber, Puma, A Wingen, Spyderco, etc. that hardly see any use because they were so expensive and I don't want them to break, chip or get lost, so all the rough and "real world" work when going hiking or canoeing is done by the cheapies or homemades where I don't mind too much.
I would stay away. Fixed blade knives is where I would spend a little more money to be sure that it was made well.
Will customs allow you to receive knives in the mail ? I know of an ebay seller that sells factory seconds of some Ontario knives. The mistakes are on the handels and such, not in the steel.
Could you buy a Ferrari with the look of a ferrari made of plastic and with a engine of 50cc ?. This knife can look great or equal to the original but the steel must be a butter steel or it can break itself at the handle etc. Perhaps for collection but in real use....
I ordered it because it was dirty cheap, I loved the look, and even if its not that great at holding an edge, I just got a Spyderco Sharpmaker and that thing puts a razor edge on anything you want The knife will make a fine looking beater knife if anything!
If it's the same as the one from PA you will be satisfied for the price. It's easy to sharpen but edge holding is similar to a blade made of 420 steel i.e. useable but not great.
Just used my Mora topline allround today:). I can get to tree topping hairs with only the smith tristone arkansas stone set. It has shaving type steel and it’s not prone to chipping at all. I just went in the forest yesterday, and was cutting down some buckthorn with it, like a machete. Probably hit stuff with it over a hundred times, no chips. And the handle is very comfortable. And despite it being stainless forthis version, it’s not super abrasion resistant, which is good, makes it easy to sharpen.
That knife on manafont, I can guarantee you will have crap steel that won’t hold an edge and will have a bad heat treatment.
Moras all so come pretty sharp, many have said it’s one of thesharpest knives out of box. And due to it being a scandi grind, it’s easily sharpened again. But I myself put a microbevel on it for even more edge stability.
I own way more knives than I’d even like to think about (this flashlight thing is relatively new for me), but when I go camping this weekend, I’ll take a Mora.
For those of you that haven’t been there:
Ragnar is a gentleman and a scholar.
But back on topic, we just need someone to do a head to head test of that Manafont F1 versus the real thing on cardboard and do some batoning, but that’s probably a whole ’nother forum……
I hear so much of these Moras. Which one would you all recommend for camping/canoe trips into the wilderness…bushcraft I suppose you’d call it. Which style, blade type, carbon or stainless etc.
