HD-2010 2 x 26650 mod. Edit. 6 amp driver 7.22.12. 9pm run time test added. 18.8.12 updated running gear.

This is a work in progress at the moment as the final led I will be using, U2 1A is still in the mail (I hope). The flashlight itself was bought from DD and is a Tangsfire.

The original spring in the tailcap was a disapointment as it was dry soldered on only. This is the furtherest thrower I own and so far like it a lot.

The mods were done for no other reason than it could be and I dislike no memory and flashy modes drivers. It will not be driven as hard as the standard flashlight but in the end I dont think this will have much effect.

Some people have recorded really high amp readings on this flashlight and if someone can tell me why I should not I'm really tempted to try one of these or similar driver and see if anything fries.

If anyone has some home brewed ideas about coloring aluminium please let me know, though in the skin it looks pretty good in its raw state.

The pill is made from copper bar. I have increased the dimensions as much as possible to help with heat dispersion away from the led.

The driver was from Lightmalls and I think it is similar to what e1320 uses in some of his mods. Very similar but not the same one as in the above picture.

The spring was added to stop damage from dropping batteries in and allow the use of protected and non protected batteries. I will have to source a blow torch to solder onter this pill as it just sucked the heat out of my large soldering iron.

To stop the reflector from shorting on the led I have cut a plastic washer from a hard plastic fruit juice bottle sitting on a piece of baking paper cut to size. The baking paper is there as I'm not sure if the plastic will melt. I have some Insulators on order form IOS.

The temporary led in it at the moment is an XML U2 2S tint. Light throw appears to be similar to the standard flashlight at 100 meters.

Using 2 x King Kongs at 4.05 volts output is 1.44 amp high, .1 amp low and .48 amp med. All measurements were taken at the tailcap end.

The tube.

Assembled

Here's a couple of other flashlights for size comparison. Left to right.

Ultrafire 504B, modded JM05, modded HD-2010 and Trustfire TR-3T6 3 cell format. The modded JM05 can be found in Foys review of this flashlight.

I will do beam shots when the new led turns up.

Comments, criticsm, and new ideas welcome. Thanks.

Pretty cool, DNF. Some run time with the HD2010 would be great and that pill is awesome.

Foy

Gotta love it.
Great looking copper heat sink you got there!

Looking forward to the beamshots with the U2.
Do you think there will be a visible difference against a T6 ?

Thanks Foy and Old. As I have previously mentioned I'm a great fan of both of your work that you do on here.

Suncoaster (you must be on the QLD coast somewhere?). If you read from post 60 on this link you will find my thoughts and pictures on the U2 2S tint led that I have in this flashlight. It does not have a green tint at all as others have asked but comes across showing the color in things as they would appear during daytime. I'm changing this to the 1A tint as reading Foys comments on his 980L has me wanting a b___h (very bright) of a light.

Edit. I'm not sure what the standard led is but I asume that it is a XML T6 1A. It is a very white light compared to the 2S tint. At 100 meters the HD-2010 in its standard form lights up the tree that I linked to in the background look very vivid. The white branches show up very white and the green leaves look slightly washed out.

DROOOOLING over that copper pill!!! If you ever decide to sell these please let me know. You can push 4-5A with a copper direct bond XML.

thats some Excellent work. thanks for sharing

It was a bit nerve racking as I have never machined copper before. I would love to offer to make these pills but it takes me a long time to do anything (ask my wife). I bought a foot of 1 1/4 inch and the same in 1 1/2 inch copper bar. Cost me $145.00. Luckily it machined up ok the first time unlike the battery tube. Bugger. I have been reading jamio mod with great interest but am a little lost on his pill. Post 34 on this link https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/8515 .

The copper direct bond I reckon at the moment is a bit out of my league. More learning to do. I'm not a young bloke any more (not saying that I'm not that old either) but this forum has seriously got the creative juices flowing again. To you all, thanks.

Gorgeous pill! You could drive it at 4A all day long with that bad boy! I’d bump that driver up but that’s just me. Run time with 1.4a should be killer though. 8)

I would be in, too!

If anyone is interested in the dimensions of the pill I'd be more than happy to put them on here. Thanks all for the positive feedback. If anyone has got ideas for a different driver, 5 amp with memory and no flashy modes and a softer action swich for the tailcap please let me know. I've been spoilt by the switch in the JM05 which is very easy to push and smooth. The Tangsfire switch is very rough in action and has an extremely heavy spring.

Here are a few Beam shots from tonight. The tree in the background is 120 meters away. The pictures are not quiet as bright as they appear in real life. Shutter speed was 2 seconds, should of been 2.5 seconds as the pictures in Foys JM05 review are what they appear in real life. I will take more pictures when the XML U2 1A and 5 amp driver turns up.

Saik SA7 XML T6 3C 2.4 amp (My first led flashlight. There is not much of this flashlight that is standard).

P60 UF 3 Mode 3 amp

TR 3T6

JM05 XML U2 2S 2.9 amp

HD-2010 XML U2 2S 2.8 amp

The following is a couple of shots of the different tints.

XML T6 3C (Saik) XML T6 U2 (HD-2010)

P60 UF 3 Mode (I guess this is a XML T6 1A) XMLU2 2S (HD-2010)

The different tints are more obvious looking at the plants in the foreground.

Thats a heck of a copper pill.

Yes it is a chunk of copper. A real bugger to get enough heat into to get solder to adhere to it. I'm sweating making the next one that I do not make a mistake on it and have to redo it. The new driver I have coming will not fit in this one.

How do you con the Mrs that you need two flashlights the same so that this one can stay as it is?

Wow awesome job, that’s some amazing machine work. I really think that driver is fine, you might get another 300 lumen tops pushing it to 4+amps and it won’t be sustainable so I wouldn’t bother plus the spacing on that driver is just about perfect.

Thanks E for the input. Are you really back from your holiday? You have only just left.

I'm afraid your to late as the driver I pm'd you has been ordered. Its Foys fault and everyone else's that raves about 4 amps plus from this flashlight that it is going to get built. I have given Mrs, MRsDnf you pm addresses so be warned that you may all be recieving her wrath.

Seriously I just want to do it for the buzz whether its a dud or a winner. Cheers.

I am back at the house for the moment we are having a graduation party for the misses tonight. I wouldn’t want to miss a house full of drunk college girls now would I.

What are you doing here talking to a old fart. Get out there and show them all how bright you are. Show them your flaming flamingo drink skills.

Congrats to the Mrs and thanks for the barter.

Nice light.
nice pill

I am an old fart to at least twice as old as most of her friends, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

It’s only 9am here party doesn’t start for another 12 hours so I have time for my nap.

Shhhh. Some people may think you should be working on this. https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/9345. This would keep me busy for the rest of my life, (No I'm not leaving any time soon), not partying on your holiday. I hope its not a Nanna nap and just a nap.
