Are cells supposed to warm at all when charging?

My tenergy 18650’s don’t warm up at all when charging for some reason. Aren’t they supposed to?

No, warming is generally caused by the combination of internal resistance and high charge rates. Since yours are new batteries they should have a low internal resistance so they will not heat up.

Lol, cool then. And are you always in this section Scaru? Maybe just the front page…

Is the internal resistance caused by the inner materials of the cell oxidizing?

I just hang out in the new posts section. :) What charger did you get?

Edit: Just realized it said it was the tl-100 in your other post. Since it charges at 350ma then your batteries will probably never get warm since it is a slow charger.

Cool battery during charge indicate awesome battery (low internal resistance) & also good charger that doesn’t warmup or transfer heat to battery.

I have few Sanyo cells salvaged from old laptop packs. they measure only 1000 - 1500 mAH. sometimes they very hot during charge (near end of charge) sometimes really cool.
I found all 8 cells from 12 randomly warm during charge. Noted that cells as ghost 18650 :stuck_out_tongue:

Wanted a shekor, but got a tl100. It’s just a tenergy charger if you don’t know. Seems fine, the transformer?, in the wall adapter thing doesnt get hot, only barely warm after a few hours. Though, I have a nice hobby charger but It’s in my dad’s garage all the way in the back, so it’d take an hour or two to get to it. He’s got ALOT of stuff in the garage, well, his wife does :).

I only charge for like 3 hours yesterday after getting the new batteries, so I put in light, and it they worked. Probably used around 10 mins top total high time, which I believe is 3 amps. And I put on charger while I sleep, don’t worry It’s in the same room as me! And so I put the batteries in, and nothing, take everything apart, put together, nothing, switch order of the cells, nothing. So I use one cell at a time, only one works. Then after like a minute of just switch modes and stuff, the one cell that did work stops working. I feel them, no heat, so I put on charger, and they’ve been charging for around 2 hours. I just woulda thought that 8 total hours of charging and only 10 mins of run time on 3amps would’ve left them with plenty of power. Maybe it’s something else, don’t know, just waiting until my charger gets here, gonna go order it right now! If they end up just being duds, I was fortunate in having ordered them for batteryjunction, which I heard has pretty good customer service, and shipped from connecticut so shouldn’t take long to get a new pair.

Though maybe that being 2600ma cells, they were a little old, so the charge that came with them would be lower than expected…

I understand you don't have a DMM so you can't check the voltage. At this point I would recommend digging out the hobby charger and charging them with that. Then you know they are fully charged.

Well, my parents are divorced and I live with my mom, so next time I’ll visit my dad will be next weekend, and I think the DMM will come here before then, probably like 3 or 4 days.

Oh ok. Then I would just stick them in the charger and let them charge all day. That way even if they were fully discharged then they would hypothetically charge to full capacity in 8 or 9 hours.

Sounds good! I’ll probably just wait until the red light goes green also just to see if it works.

You need a DMM to ascertain what’s really going on - PLEASE be safe.

Is it working now?

Lithium batteries are really efficient at charging. They should only increase a couple of degrees if any at all. If they are getting hot, like another poster said earlier, you should discard them. They are dangerous.

Sure is, used for a couple hours with a couple friends going in a creek and catching fish. I can say then, the Crelant 7g5 v2 is pretty waterproof. I had it like 6 or 7 feet under water a a few minutes at a time for an hour.
