Review: Fenix E01 - another review of classic

In a survival situation, there are a few essentials you should never forget – shelter, water, food and rescue. However, in order to be capable to do that 24/7, what includes nighttime, you should never omit one thing – the light. Candles are cool, but there’s nothing to beat a good flashlight.

For me, ideal flashlight has to fulfill these specs:

  • very common battery type (either AA or AAA)
  • long runtime
  • waterproof and shockproof
  • medium beam distance with good spill
  • affordable

There were 2 that fit to my AAA specs category, Fenix E01 and Klarus Mi10 (review to come) .

So, let’s have a look at Fenix E01 first :

  • aluminum body
  • Nichia white GS LED with 10 lumens
  • 21 hour runtime ( 11 hours “sun”mode, 10 hours “moon”mode )
  • waterproof IPX-8

Body: From what I can say, this flashlight is a little tank. It’s very sturdy, waterproof, it’s lacking reflector glass (what I think is more positive than negative thing = no glass to break) and it’s tiny! Not much bigger than single AAA battery. There are a few color variations you can choose from ( black, olive, gold, blue, purple ) – I own two golds. In fact, it’s more orange with yellow tint, than gold – that’s why I chose it, they are very easy to find. Fenix E01 is virtually indestructible - there were a few tests where it was frozen to the block of ice and the light was still running!

LED: Fenix chose Nichia GS LED for their E01 line – I can say, there are many better and brighter LEDs, like CREE XP-E, XM-L or newer XP-G Gen 2, but light output is not what I was looking for. In a crisis, there will be lack or resources and batteries are among the first things to go. I choose AAA, because you can find it literally everywhere, just have a look around: clock, remote control, mouse, RC model, almost everywhere. Fenix E01’s Nichia GS LED gives constant output of 10 lumens, which is electronically regulated, so there’s nothing like continuously fading light while battery drains – it gives constant, steady output. Battery capacity decrease was solved by two automatic modes which Fenix calls SUN (10 lumen) and MOON mode ( less than 10 ). Advertised runtime is 21 hours, which depends on battery used. Overall, 10 lumens is just enough for the tasks, I was a little surprised by the beam distance – in a dark, I’m able to light up objects up to 35 meters! That’s fantastic for such a little light. The light is white with a little blue/violet in the middle – what I consider a little drawback.

Oh, and I forgot one detail: this little tank costs around 14$ ! Definitely very affordable..

RATING:

LIGHT OUTPUT: 5/10

BUILT QUALITY: 9/10

VALUE: 10/10

LIKABILITY – total rating: 8/10 - recommended

My E01 love story goes like this. I once bought the E01 too, 5 bucks or something. When i got it, i waited until night. Inserted battery, turned the E01 on, couldnt stop lmao and thought it was the greatest joke ever among flashaholics. The next day i woke up, sold it, and was happy ever after. The end.

Welcome to BLF. Great review

Welcome and thanks for really good made review ;)!

Great review. I gave my wife an E01 and she loves it. It’s perfect for her: easy to carry and use, tough, long battery life, and a nice beam.

I just got one a few weeks ago, and I like it for what it is. I didn’t expect a torch. I fits into my world. This size of light is great when I’m backpacking. And I totally agree its great if power’s out and I can’t recharge batteries.

I do wish mine had color output like yours in the photo above. Mine has a very purple hue to it.

BTW, thanks for the review.

Thanks, happy you like it. I’m going to write a few more - Klarus Mi10 to be the next - it’s really heck of light! Shame on me to say so, but it leaves E01 behind… Wait for comparison shots!

I’ll look forward to it. The Mi10 is a bit price IMO…I know you’re getting more, but I just have a hard time seeing a light that isn’t going to be used a lot cost me that much.

Looking forward to Mi10 review. A very nice light!

Hey Kreisler…I know some deep caves in Mexico (where the angels fear to tread) that I could take you to and leave your ass in there…bet you’d be glad to have that E01 then……and don’t worry, I’d search your skin flint ass to make sure you had no other lights on your person. Think you’d ever make it out of that cave? The E01 would save your bacon BOY… LMAO

Don’t be hating on Fenix E01 now. It is one legendary tough bastard of a light. 8)

I bought my Fenix E01 in March 2010 and has been on my key ring ever since. I've dropped it dozens of times over the last 2.5+ years and the thing just keeps working. I can't even remember when I put a new battery in it. It's a great buy it and forget it kind of torch. So all I can say is "I love my Fenix E01!!!"

I want your opinions. Look at this picture and tell me I should be bugged. I look at other beam shots and I feel mine its way too purple. This is on a sheet of paper. Would you call Fenix?

Nice post. Got the same light (same colour too) and carried with me wherever I go.

I bought one for my GF to keep on her key chain. 2 months later she had dropped it…
Good thing it was cheap.

Anyway, that one was also very purple, nothing like the beamshots in this review. If my memory serves me right it’s supposed to be quite purple, the Nichia led used is like that. I wouldn’t worry.

Don't hate on the kriesler 4000 other people thought the same thing .. it gets a 10 out of ten for toughness a Thrunite ti blows it away 30hrs on 3 lumens and the firefly version is 175 hrs ? It offers up a sweet tint to boot .. If they cleaned up the tint mess it might have some merit ..a purple light light to me ..is just unacceptable ...

I assume kriesler could probably find a eo1 on the cave floor from when a caveman used one in the Paleolithic era and dropped it because he thought the tint sucked and it was dimmer than a lit stick.

too funny :D

..well.. i should try a Thrunite Ti one day, just to make sure that it is not as likeable as my 8 units of e09.

*right now* my 1xAAA light on the table is E10 body (with perfectly working SS clicky) + ITP A3 head (and pocket clip) + Protected Gray Ultrafire 10440 (47.1mm long ones!!). beats da living cr*p out of the e01 ;)

And about ruggedness .. heat-shrink wrap does the trick.

Would love to see a pic of some heat shrink wrapped lights. That is a great idea that I wish I had thought of. On my larger lights like my UF-2100, I have used inner tube from a thin tire road bike and I get a rubberized light for free. Makes it more durable and grippy and warmer in the winter.

Here on my 1xAAA lights. The idea with party balloons makes it a perfect method.

Thanks very much! Frontpage’d and Sticky’d.
