Am I missing anything with my thinking on 18650 batteries?

Have been trying to get some good 18650’s for my SkyRay King and I have a thought.

I ordered some Trustfire flames from China, and the seem to have disappeared somewhere into the Universe. I also bought some of the Green Ultrafires from DX, two of them came dead with acid on the ends. So here is my thought, any reasons my thinking is off?

I also have some Ultrafire 4000’s that I currently use. Those can be bought in the US and at your door in about 5 days. Actual capacity has been tested by various places at about 1500 to 1700 mah. And that seems to be about right in my King. So tell me why wouldn’t this be better:

8 of the Ultrafire 4000’s shipped to my door in a few days for $20 (For all eight.) Now between the 2 sets, I now have the equivalent of one set of batteries with an actual rating of 3000-3400 mah. The downside is that you have to change batteries somewhere along the way.

4 of the Trustfire flames shipped to my door (if they ever show up!) for about $20. Only one set at a rating of about 2400 mah. (Maybe.)

So for the same price, quicker shipping, and a runtime on my light of an extra runtime on my light of an extra 25% to 30%! Without the hassles (minus having to change batteries more often!)

Any thoughts? Am I misssing something?

Yes. Order some from Kumabear. You can get protected Keeppower 2600mAh cells for ~$6 each. Don't try to go cheap on batteries, it will come back to bite you everytime (eventually). It's not just about capacity, it's about safety, longevity and quality. Over time, cheap batteries don't save you anything and probably cost you more.

+1!

As BR said, capacity is but one aspect to consider, more importantly is that they are quality protected cells. Also as high-powered (high current draw) and multi-emitter lights become more prevalent, you'd want to future-proof your purchase by getting quality cells that can handle these lights.

Whats your question exactly? You may get more runtime for less money with the hassle of exchanging the cells at some point, true. The King isnt critical because cells are run in parallel.

Dont ever try to use 3 cells at 1000mAh, 1500mAh and maybe 800mAh in series. Capacity of cheap cells might drop more quickly than the capacity of better cells.. some people like to take the risk, I think LiIon cells are dangerous enough not to risk anything for a few bucks.

Also, if you search for LiIon accidents, they happened with cheap/crappy cells. Go figure.

i ran the green with clear wrap panasonic protected 18650 from focalprice in my king. 8ish/battery shipped.

they appear on there from time to time and i buy a few more when they are on there.

much better budget decision than ultrafire batteries.

So that's why. I was looking around FP and couldn't find and Panasonics, when I just bought some a few months back.

SKU that appear from time to time? Now that's weird.

yeah i clicked on the original link in the original thread on here and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt
