I’ve only just realized that good lights dont need to cost over 100 dollars. Although I’ve never owned one, when I think of the nichia 219 I think of McGizmo and Malkoff M61 219’s.
I would really like to have a premade light with a 219, but I’m really not interested in spending big bucks on a really basic low output light, besides the fact that P60 hosts wind up too large (for the lack of power) and of course McGizmo’s are far out of my price range.
Do any of you guys know of a cheap 1xAA / 14500 light that can be had with a 219?
As a last resort, I am definitely interested in host light suggestions that can readily accept the 219.
I just thought it was worth asking if such a light existed. It isn’t like the emitter is any more expensive than XPG’s and XML’s that everything has. I thought there might be some cheapo light out there that comes with one. Is there? In any size?
I don’t know about perfect. Neutral tint are best when bright, and that light doesn’t seem to support 14500. But it’ll still be the only one available.
I doubt it. High CRI only sells to snobs or for very specific needs. The general public (and following the chinese budget companies) go for output numbers, and the Nichia is ok, but average in that aspect. Cree sells!
I’ve had a couple lights modded with the Nichia, I also got dropins done by Nail and Vinh. The one I use most is the smallest of the bunch. An AA or AAA over 100 lumens would be pretty sweet. (Not a wow light)
Me to I put a Nichia 219 in one of these F20 type hosts and use it for my walking around the house at night light. It’s really nice easy to build and reasonably priced.
I follow you from the technical standpoint-scotopic/photopic vision, the Purkinje effect and such. In practice though, I find the visual benefits of a neutral high-CRI emitter such as the N219 still apply in diminuitive or simply lower-powered lights because I almost always use them up close where I want to observe small details with non-garish tint. Kruithof’s curves are also interesting.
Yes it definitely still applies since even what we consider “dim” lights (100lum) are still relatively bright. I mostly mentioned it’s not “perfect” since a lithium powered 200-300 lumens is even better. That’s not a huge diff in the dark since the pupil adjust to some degree, but going from a lit place to unlit you have a reference in indoor lighting and aa powered is noticeably dimmer.
