anyone got the latest tesco 2aa cree?

I was in tesco and saw a new 2aa cree light for 10 pounds but never bought it as i have a bit more self control these days. I had a quick look at the led and it was a cree I’m not familiar with, so I’m guessing it was a xre2 or xpe2 as it was a lot smaller than a xpg.anyone got one? If so are they regulated, how bright etc…….probably pick one up next time I’m in there

I picked on up a couple of years ago. I know they have changed the design since. Not a bad light for a tenner. Guys at work love em, make good Christmas stocking gifts.

is there any photo available?

XP-C perhaps?

No sorry,i was just browsing and to be honest only looked at it for a very short while. The xp-c after a bit of googling could be the one, next time I’m in there if i don’t buy one i will get a picture and pop it on here

Also has a programmable 1AA? flashlight at £14.99.

edit; http://www.tesco.com/direct/aa-mytorch-programmable-led-flashlight/123-5090.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=123-5090

That’s a pretty good price for the Nextorch mytorch, but Tesco sell them via Maplin, who are out of stock.

They also have what i think is a 2D cell cree torch for 14.99, similar led, small die definately a cree, didnt take much notice at the time, looked well made, ideal candidate for some mods methinks… Looked at the 2xAA lights mentioned, because they said on offer £2.99, or some other low figure. Just about to grab a handful when i noticed the boxes had been moved around and £2.99 was for some plastic piece of junk. Blah

But I wouldn’t pay 15 quid for such a tiny LED!!

Had a look at lunchtime.

The 2AA has a sort of fenix e20 / e21 thing going on style wise. The head has very few threads holding it on I counted only 2 threads on the three I had a look at. Good solid o ring at the head and tail, the tail has a lot more threading and a long spring with protruding switch. No tail standing. The Led centering varies but most look ok, anodizing looks to be HA II as the ones on the shelf have gathered a few scuffs.

£9.95

The Two D cell torch looks a lot better build wise, fair amounts of threading either end , side switch and a decently centered LED for £14.99

Overall for robustness I’d go with the 2D, dont know if the head threads on the AA would survive a small drop, Lens on both seems plastic & reflectors smooth.

Leds have the look of a Mini R5, small emitter dome on square pcb with white squares at two corners.

Is there a ban on camera imports to the UK or something?

Well I’m not going to buy them and I cant really do a breakdown and beam shot test in the shop

Plus setting up the tripod and photographic plates needed would probably upset the shop management

Was it this one?

I got it last year (Dec), think it was new then. After Christmas I also picked up the 2D version.

For off the shelf budget lights in the UK I think they are good value and performers.

The 2AA one uses an XP-C and the 2D an XP-E. Plastic SMO reflectors and plastic lenses. Build quality seems fairly ok. Smooth threads and well centered LED’s. O-Rings at all the joins.

I’ve not taken mine apart but the pill looks removable but I doubt the best for modding.

Finish is matt black, presume some sort of anodising but I don’t know exactly. Seems similar finish to the current 2012 Edition Solarforce L2M but might not be as robust.

The 2AA has quite a ringy beam, but very good throw and moderately bright. Again not bad for off the shelf AA powered.

With the 2D:

The 2D has a side switch and is quite compact compared to a 2D MagLite. This light performs brilliantly. I kid you not when I say it out throws my new Crelant V9CS rated at 658 lumens with an XM-L U2!!!

Sizes compared to a Mag 3D:

2D Tesco CREE:

Some comparison beamshots:

Youve shown me that 2D beamshot and I’m thinking mmmm £14.99 that’s not to bad really. You can see what I mean about short head threads on the AA though.

Think I might get one of those 2D

It really is quite good for the money tbh. Ok not a monster like some of the lights you can buy online and wait 3 weeks for, but then it does run on D cells and is off the shelf available.

I’ve got a Small Sun ZY-T13 which is raved about as a good thrower for the money, and it is. But you’d be amazed how close this Tesco 2D performs to. Smaller hotspot and less bright spill, but throw is not hugely different and it still puts out quite a lot of good spill light.

As you can see from these pics the hot spot of the Tesco CREE 2D seems to have similar intensity to the Small Sun.

Yep there aren’t loads of threads. Seems pretty solid though. And by coincidence I’m using my 2AA one as an EDC today.

Those beamshots are a real surprise!!, didn’t think they’d perform as good as that

Wow some great replies here and some great work by Chicken Drumstick! well yes these are the lights and after this help I have been recommending them to my friends at work, most who still have mini mags!!!

Compared to an Incan Mini Mag the 2AA is very good. But a long way off the 18650 lights we talk about on here. I also think it runs better on lithium primaries than Eneloops. And the beam is dingy if you are white wall hunting, but fine outside. Would make a great car backup light.

The 2D is a seriously good performer in its own right, even more so considering the power source it uses. Again a little ringy on the beam but not bad at all on my example.

Probably not the most mod friendly though.

I got a 2AA tesco one a few years back, for a present for someone, when walking the dog, it has been dropped, trod on etc, it’s an earlier version of the 2aa shown, main difference being the end is rounded, but has actually changed colour, it was all black but now the end cap with single clicky SW in it has gone a nice shade of brown.
Performance wise I think they are great for a 2aa, a tight beam with not much spread.
One issue I did find was using NIMH these often wouldn’t fit, of if they did were really tight and couldn’t be got out again.
I used a blacksmiths drill bit and mounted drill and body in my lathe to make body internal slightly larger, did the trick.
Runs off either NIMH or GP AA, would certainly recommend as a cheap reliable tough light.

Hey you lot!

I was in Tesco last night, and I had a look at these two lights, the 2D cell one had sorta, 1 quarter OP at the base of the reflector, and the rest was smooth!

I had one in my basket, but I put it back as I’m awaiting my first Jacob A60!!

The Tesco one looked well made, good quality, but the thing that stopped me was the OP mixed with the smooth reflector, basically I wanted to know why the manufacturers might have done that, and if anyone has seen this new generation Tesco torch, unless of course they already had this dual reflector, and I merely hadn’t spotted it!!

Cheers all,

Rob
