It’s beautiful with that new-penny look. It’s just not so good looking years later. I think the stainless offerings look pretty nice too, and would hold up better over time.
The main thing I don’t like about the Maratacs is that they start out on high. I know that’s a matter of personal preference, but when I’m out in the woods at night I prefer a level that doesn’t destroy my night vision and alert my presence to everything with eyes in a half-mile radius.
Ooh, if so I want one. I was going by the description on the County Comm site of the “Extreme” models, but now I see that Maratacs differ in terms of mode order. I may just have to give myself one like yours as a Christmas present.
Does that really matter? My aluminum lights (and my stainless one too) don’t fail because of heat. It might be a theoretical advantage, but not a practical one.
Sure. I guess the question is really whether people buy them for heat dissipation, or because they look cool; and if the former, whether it really makes a non-negligible difference. People’s perceptions can differ from reality.
if you meant ‘neglible’, then I agree, at least for a light this size, your hand and blood circulation are more helpful w/ heat than the difference between copper and aluminum…
I’ll admit, I’d buy one for the cool factor - if that had a $5 or maybe $10 premium.
I read on CPF about someone who put a Nichia219 into the copper AAA, and he found that the heatsinking from led->pill->body wasn't that good in the stock Maratac (so he improved that). So if you are not going to mess with the light, don't expect miracle heatsinking from the copper body (but do go for the looks ).
