Defiant Tactical 1x AA @ Home Depot

Came across a nice tacticool light at HD, of course I went in to buy household supplies  . For a whopping $7 and change I couldn’t pass on it. First impressions; not bad , build quality is actually pretty nice. Body is some kind of plastic. Matte black, solid feel to it. Plastic lens, nice OP reflector. Aluminum battery tube. Sturdy pocket clip. No Momentary activation (So much for a tactical light) LED looks to be a unknown Cree LED (Q?) 1 mode . Packaging says uses 1xAA, tried a Li-ion for fun  turned on for a few seconds, started flickering so immediately turned off. I’m guessing a negative with Li-ion. NiMh are okay. No mention of water proofing but there are o-rings front and back. Output is probably right on with FL 1 standards of 56 lumens as advertised.

If you take a picture of the LED we can identify it for you.

Looks like an XP-E. How’s the plastic material feel? Like, chintzy plastic? Or more like Glock polymer?

Haha… not close to glock polymer but not cheap plastic. Similar to Pelican flashlights.

+1, can't say for sure that it isn't a XP-G with out a better focused picture though.

It looks to small to be a xpg. Compared it next to a xpe and looks to be an exact match.

XP-E and XP-G substrates are the same size, the only difference is the die size which in my expierence is very hard to tell. The easiest way is how many current spreaders (little lines) it has on the die.

Oh, ok thanks for that. It must feel pretty decent…I’ll pick one of these up. The reflector looks like an O-L special, so I imagine the beam is pretty smooth?

Yes, very smooth. Neutral tint too

I have to admit that I have never really been a fan on 1AA lights. But my L3 Illuminations L10 has certainly gotten me to better appreciate this form factor. So it was only the other day that I actually decided to pick up this guy from Home Depot. All I have to say is that it’s not bad. It’s not NEARLY as bright as my XP-G2 L10. But then again, it’s only rated at 56 lumens. And like ALL Defiant lights I own, it makes good on its lumen rating with a decently good tint. Battery life is about 2.5 hours on a Duraloop, which certainly isn’t too bad. But one of the GREATEST things about this light is that it is one I will actually be willing to use. There’s just something about that orange L10. I just don’t want to beat the thing up using it every day. But the Defiant? Because it’s a cheap plastic light that is easily available (ie available locally rather than mail order), I don’t care if it gets dinged up.

On the ither hand, I’ve been wondering if possibly an emitter upgrade coukd improve this light. Not sure what kind of emitter it uses (XP-E maybe?). But I’m thinking that a newer, more efficient emitter may significantly improve output and runtime.

I think I read on another forum that this light has a Cree XPC in it.
