ar lens question

will they work on hids? where can i find 75mm lenses? thanks

Yes but don’t forget they also need uv filtration. No idea where to get one, try some manufactures direct (goog might be your friend.) even if they wont supply direct they might be able to point you in the right direction.

thanks, more searching i guess

look up a cheap camera lens filter on ebay with multi coated lens (ar) and UV. We use these to protect the actual glass element in the end of the lens, making the UV filter the one that gets scratched instead of the lens. The aluminum mounting ring usually has a split ring holding the glass in place. A 77mm mount should have a 75mm piece of glass in it.

What a good idea! optically in a sandwich with possibly the original lens but light side…. umm maybe my own diy lantern to HD conversion might be on again….

One question not really done serious photog for 30 years, in those days the uv filter (at least the ones I had) needed a correction to the exposure applied, I think the very good quality HIDs Lenses are around 90 to 95% transmission (at least that was what I was told) Are the camera uv filters the same as in my day or better now?

It’s an argument, of course, but a majority use UV filters on every lense simply for protection. Leave them on all the time. I do. But then, I buy B+W and they ain’t cheap!

You might also check www.flashlightlens.com for their AR coated lenses in water white and borofloat. Not sure if you could get a 75mm but I think I remember seeing that size when scoping out parts for a project that I ended up scrapping due to rising costs.

Looks like 78mm and 89mm in borofloat at 94% transmission are their biggest lenses.

Good link thanks, unfortunately no mention of uv might ask them, but the double coated lens look good for non hid use, if the shocker boys could get the size they need that might solve their problems.

Here’s a starting point for a ~75mm UV AR coated filter. I have no idea how close you’ll come to these specs on ebay, search for digital filters to get the multi coat and common UV protective lenses are probably what you’re looking for.

This one is a house brand, more or less, ProOptic carried by Adorama in NYC. Their prices are always competitive and they have free shipping on a great many items. This filter is $19.95, you may or may not be able to do better at that diameter.

Happy hunting!

Be aware that a lot of cheap supposedly UV blocking filters are nothing more than plain glass and many are not even coated!

Thanks again  now got a new avenue to explore and plan… Got to start seriously saving for an upcoming light in April but the lantern HID is back on the to do list…

In my time I also used the uv filter to protect the camera lens. but as most of my cameras did not have internal metering so depending on filter there were some sums to do…. Optics these days really seem to have made giant strides.

Yup had one of my eyes damaged by some sunglasses turned out they were in fact fakes (though I bought them in a high street chemist) so did not have proper uv protection. Am always suspicious about what I buy nowadays.

Adorama is a known entity, I’ve bought several thousands of dollars worth of camera gear there, I know. So they claim this one is very comparable to the big brands, it is. Would I use it on a $2000 lens? Hmmmm, would def have to check into it further….my brass mounted B+W’s are in the $80 range for Multi Coated AR UV’s. But if you’re just gonna pull the lens, the frame hardly matters.

We once bought “name brand polarized lenses” for my wife who suffers migraines. She wore em at the pool, of course. The chlorine flat out killed the cheap polarized glasses poste haste, shredded the polarized layer. They weren’t major expensive but they certainly weren’t cheap. Next time we went with Oakley’s and have never looked back.

found these… http://www.edmundoptics.com/optics/windows-diffusers/visible-windows/anti-reflection-ar-coated-high-efficiency-windows/1919

So that 46-101 is what you’re looking at, right? At 3” (75mm) you’re gonna want a 3mm thickness I’m thinking. Have to check that and see if it’ll fit.

You can bet I bookmarked that site!

Luck!

Once again cheers, and it’s in the uk

Yeah I was wondering what the difference between the 46-101 and the 46-102 was. Good site!

If you expand the window with the + sign the only difference I see listed is that the 46-101 listed tolerance of +/- .76 so it could be off by as much as 1.5mm from the smallest to the largest sample. Other than that I don’t see a difference.

I wonder if, getting something like this and finding it a bit on the large side, a diamond cutting wheel on a dremel would work to slightly reduce the diameter of the glass? Of course, breathing protection, eye protection all sorts of care would have to be taken grinding glass down!!!

Hi V6,

I have the 46-102 3” x 3mm thick lens. I found this site some weeks back. The difference between the 101 and 102 is the 101 is a rectangle or square, the 102 is round. If anyone orders from them, make sure you check the description carefully.

Now that it’s right there pointed out, I have to wonder why it was so easy to miss? 3x3 vs. 3” diameter? I’m getting too old. :frowning:

Thanks, the 102 it is then!
