Car lock lube question

What do you use to lubricate car door locks? i wonder what the locksmiths recommend?

I heard WD dries out too quick, Graphite is sticky and not good for humidity, 3&1 dries out and leaves thick residue, silicone does not attack existing corrosion.

Sewing machine oil works well

Thanks for your input guys...

So far we have sewing oil and high pressure grease.

The sewing oil seems too think for this application but if it works, it works. I have used gun oil myself. I suspect it has the same consistency as the sewing oil. I have even used lambs fat in a can!

I'm not sure what high pressure grease is. Is it oil, silicone, teflon based?

Break Free CLP gun oil…

I have always heard you are suppose to use a graphite lubricant.

I’m guilty of using WD40 too, but WD40 isn’t a lubricant. Helps free the lock up if its sticking quite well.
WD40 is more of a solvent and a rust dissolver.

Actually it is a wax. Also known as Wanton Destruction 40. It will eventually gum up whatever it is used on. Avoid.

I have never heard that one texaspyro.
Where did you find it contains wax? I know its 50% mineral spirits but does it really contain wax?

I use the stuff all the time machining steel and aluminum.

There was a company that was using it in an industrial product. They started having field failures. They had it analyzed and the conclusion was… wax.

Thanks for the info Texaspyro.
From what I understand about the product the ingredients where kind of a secret. The wax I guess is just another one of there secret ingredients. Just wanted to get to the bottom of this I had never heard that before anywhere. Good to know, there really is no telling what they put in crap we don’t know about.

WD 40 only good thing for that stuff is removing adhesive residue comes clean off 8)
I personally use Plus gas for freeing out parts never had problem.

I’ve used lithium based grease for locks, also Teflon grease and Rocol dry lubricant before now I’ve not had any adverse effects
just regular attention spray/dab every so often.

I use Slip 2000 EWL for all kinds of metal on metal contact lubrication, works great. Best lube I have used. MILITEC-1 is also good stuff. Little bit goes a long ways and lasts long time. Not sure how they will effect o-rings in flashlights though.

I love Ballistol for everything. It is organic, doesn’t harm plastics, clean oxidation, protect and lubricate very good. It just doesn’t work well on flashlights as it is slightly alkaline. It may over clean your flashlights anodizing, but works really well in mechanics ang guns.

For the key lock itself I shove in the tube of a WD-40 can and give it a shot. Locksmiths prefer you use graphite, but it turns to mud if you get it wet.

For the lock latches I use spray on lithium grease and machine/motor oil on the hinge pins.
