the road to flashaholism is painfull

I’ve just submitted $200 or so of orders……

Out of that, I think I ordered a spare emitter for myself, the rest is parts to build up kits for other people thar wont appreciate the subtle nuances of the builders art.

If I’m honest, I’m feeling slightly depressed about the whole thing :frowning:

I’m sure they will appreciate the sentiment (and the nice light!), even if they don’t understand the intricacies.

Hey Scrooge, its the thought that counts!!

Only kidding……they don’t deserve such goodies!

A work buddy bought a “3W Police” single AA torch on ebay for about £2. Knowing that I have a weakness for torches he excitedly showed me “just how bright” it was… it wasn’t great, the colour troubled me (purple/blue) and the switch was cr@p.
Needless to say I sorted it out with a new driver, led, reflector and switch free of charge and he said “it doesn’t look as bright now”……

AAAAAGHHHHHHH !!!

you aren’t obligated to make nice lights for people who aren’t really interested, just buy them a romisen rc g2 and be done with it, cheaper and more then enough for their needs

if I point out some defect in a project, people (other than blf’rs) often say to me - “no one will notice that except you”

and I say, I know that, but that’s why I do a job right…because I notice.

anyway, I was expecting to see a photo of a thumb that caught a slipped drill bit, as we’ve seen here a few times w/ such titles as the OP. glad to see that wasn’t the case

You’re supposed to use your backstock of old emitters and drivers on those, let their money replace that old outdated stuff with modern new parts for your own builds! Ask Steve, he’ll set ya straight!

I think you need to play with Scaru’s 7-up P-60 for a little while….

Can you please send Gords one of those pink unicorns or ponys or something, a rabbit perhaps, to cheer him up?

i agree, i would charge them a bit less then new item prices, but i would make non flashaholic lights with parts i have since they aren’t going to appreciate the added cost and better performance of the new stuff

+1 do getting rid of older parts/emitters if people don’t really appreciate the subtle differences. (In other words, upgrading your own lights, and still selling good lights)

Generally ,if you don’t like what you do, then don’t do it.

I saw the parts you ordered in the fasttech.
I like your choice of emitter. Just curios about some of the parts…
-Do you have experience with the driver? Mine seems to drop rapidly while doing a tailcap reading. Ill have to double check my work on it. (the specs Fasttech have in it are all over the place, but I knew they were somewhat off before I ordered)
-Are you sure it will fit the pill (without some work to it)?
-Is there a reason you bought the UR18650ZT instead of the UR18650FM?

Now don’t you feel so much better? One Kute Kustom Kitty just for you. Thanks Chloe.

gords you should do a few builds to sell and then get something for yourself

Thanks Chloe, I had to forward this to a couple of cataholics

Protestants too

Gord I was starting a thread naming you "The modder to most watch this year "

before my computer rebooted and I lost it all.

BLF members noobs should be watching list .

I have other lists too :P

Which list would I be on?

That is the whole thing about being a true addict. Yes, the roller coaster of emotions, elation, pleasure, guilt, — isn’t it sweet. Love/hate — I love to do this, but I hate myself. I have been thinking, we should all get together, and write a flashlight will.

Dearly Beloved, I hereby bequeath my entire fortune in flashlights to my dear _ of whom I have thought so much of, that I would depart this world and leave……wait just a minute, I am taking them with me, my grubby mitts are going to lock down on that TN31 and no one, I mean no one, is going to pry it loose….embalm me with Lithium and stick a torch in every orifice…

Gords, we all suffer the same disease. I build lights for two reasons...

1. I like it!

2. Money.

A guy came to pick one up last week. When he ordered it, he whined about the price. That doesn't happen too often and I really don't like it. It honestly hurts my feelings. Just can't help it.

He called to check on the light a day or so before it was ready and asked... " If I come early to get the light can I watch you make something?" ... A little reluctantly, I said yes. He arrived and I had his light laying in a Honduras Rosewood wooden box on the bench. He opened the box and just stepped back without even touching the light. He just stood there a minute and stepped back to the box, hands shaking, he took out the light. He had water running out of both eyes.

Long story short he was here about two hours... never laid the box and light down. He held it like a mother holds a child...and when it was dark, we went out and turned it on and again, the tears flowed and the gent let out a war hoop that made the dogs bark for a mile. SO... I learned something... it helps your heart to share what you do...sometimes even when you really don't want to. In the beginning, I nearly refused to build the light...because I didn't like the guy much. I would have lost more than money... THREE TIMES he has called and thanked me for building the light. Each time, I got that good feeling inside, the work got a little easier, and the expenses a little lighter. Share not just the lights...but the work you do... it helps. The Best to ya. Dan.

At least you are completing mods . I’ve spent quite a bit and all I have so far is a pile of parts and disassembled flashlights. I think I had some newb ambition but I’m having a hard time doing what you guys make look so easy. It’s still enjoyable though, sometimes you have to sit back and remember what you’re doing is fun.

And from the customer side of things, to see what you guys do is amazing! My Texas Poker that Photon Fanatic built is incredible and I just wish I could pick it up personally, but I’m in Temple and he’s in Massachusetts, hardly possible. He shared pics of the build though and that made it like standing over his shoulder…incredible experience! The price is perhaps a little tough to bear, but it’s worth every penny and then some for the work he did and the way he went about it. I’d gladly do it all over again, and just might… next time I’ve got $500 or more to spare!
