What thrower to get?

So im looking to get a really good thrower, ive been looking at the TN31 style or even the Armytek Barracuda. but how is the useable spill? Is it worth getting a light with massive throw if im lighting up something farther away then I can see, and not lighting up things closer to me? it the TK75 maybe a better option? I don’t want a ‘wall’ of light, I like a nice focused beam.

I’ve always loved a focused beam, but as of late, playing with my Skyray King has me loving high output. If you’ll spend the money, you can get both in the TK75. I’m fighting off the urge to buy it even now! And I LOVE, love, love my STL-V2. But sometimes, nothing takes the place of just massive amounts of light!

I have quite a few flooders already and a couple so so throwers, so I would like to get one really good thrower.

for the money i guess one can argue the best thrower is probably TN31. built and quality is top notch.
it’s one of the light that you’re guarantee will be happy out of the box.
with other cheaper lights… you probably need to mod it first to get it to throw farther ( if you know how to mod it of course…)

The TN31 has a clone; Supbeam K40. There are a couple of threads on here, and a member sells them through his web store. A decent price shipped to Canada.
Another member has real good prices on TN31 XM-L2. I don’t know if he ships to Canada though.

Other throwers to consider are Crelant 7G5CS with the collimator head, which MD-Lightsource has on sale right now, free shipping into Canada. Pure throw no spill in that configuration, and you can still go back to the original head for a decent reflector thrower.

My mid-range thrower is an HD2010 modded with an XM-L2 on copper SinkPad, driven at 5A+. It measures a decent 90kcd after 30 seconds. Stock, a good HD2010 can throw around 45-50kcd.

I haven’t done much modding, but im not opposed to it, I have the equipment to do it, just not always the time :)…

I have a HD2010 right now, great all rounder, but looking for more throw. Hows the useable spill beam on the TN31 in real life?

Right on Thrunites website they have the XM-L2 for $165 with free shipping. If im going to pay $120ish for a clone I would rather spend a little more and get the real thing I think….

Solarforce S1100 is the same price as that K40 and it's, well, Solarforce.

There’s HEAPS of TN31 beamshots around, you’ll probably be able to see the small amount of spill you get from them.

That XML2+sinkpad is with dome intact, I presume? Because my T13 pushes 90kcd at only 3A, stock T6 emitter+base, just dedomed.

If so, wow, imagine 180kcd from your single cell HD2010 when that emitter is “soaked”

I have an XM-L T6 dedomed HD2010 as well, throws around 85kcd. I just jo not like the nasty hotspot it has, as well as the greenish tint. Probably needs a reflector adjustment.
Getting above 150kcd in the HD2010 would be great. Maybe an XM-L2 T6 0D tint would dedome about where the tint should be.

Anyone using the word “love” 3 times to describe 1 flashlight gets my attention. But which one if you don’t mind me asking? You talking about the $35 one at fastech? Or a single emitter version?

I noticed the one at Fasttech is 3 x XML. I was referring to the usual one. I got mine at DX for around $50 a year and a half ago. First one was a Uniquefire and it shorted out. They replaced it with a Sky Ray STL-V2 and it’s been great, even with 2 Trustfire 18500s. It has great output and the beam is wonderful and white. It is regulated also. You can’t really see further than it will throw, and unlike the Defiant 3 C XM-L with its tiny, less useful beam, this gets it right. And the body is thin and easy to hold. It has momentary on and is never ceases to amaze. Hence, the 3 loves!

I get neutral on all my dedome except one, which gets greenish tint just like you described.

I REALLY wished I had taken more notice on before and after tints, just so I can buy exactly the tint needed.

But I did take note on that greenish one. The one that turned green was around 1B or 1C with dome, turned upper 2S / 2T after dedome. I dunno… normally I’d expect that tint turn to 2C or something. Maybe dedoming tint shift is just not exact science after all?

Not gonna throw as far as TN31… Great light though, if not different style…

These images will give you an idea of the useable spill on a TN31 (This is the XM-L2 version running a little higher than standard current), they are 'very' close to real life brightness.

If you can handle the spill starting about 8 feet in front of you when walking. The useable spill is actually very good.

+1

Thanks for the pics! I ended up ordering the new XM-L2 version right from the Thrunite store. figured $165 was a pretty good deal, and cant hurt ordering straight from the manufacture. warranty issues(if any) should be easy. plus I got DHL shipping to Canada for $6

I think -JOE- is selling them cheaper, and the advantage is he checks em out so you know they are good! There's been some QA issues with ThruNite's lately. I think IlluminationSupply handles US service for ThruNite, not sure bout Canada... Joe's post here: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/17394#node-20178. From reading the post, not sure of the current price and CA will be extra. Would have been worth checking out though because of his testing of the units prior to shipping and maybe quicker delivery.

I asked Joe about Cdn shipping; $30 unfortunately. :frowning:
I will hold off on the TN31for now. I have one more thrower to add to my list, then I’ll focus on modding what I have for a while.

shipping should be fairly quick, I hope anyways. they quoted me 2-4 business days for the DHL service. For $6 I think its worth it. now lets see if they deliver….
