Custom P60 from a non P60 host -

I do like my P60 hosts , I think the picture tells it all .

But today I just want to talk about 3 non P60 hosts that were very easily converted to P60 , My first LED flashlight , the Romisen RL B7 , the SAIK SA-8 and the EDI T29 .

The first thing that needs doing is to make the original lights into empty hosts .

Remove the factory pill and reflector ..

With the Romisen , the pill will drop in from the front , remove the lens ring , and drop in the P60 module , it may or may not want the outer neg spring , I have gone both ways in the past .

Screw the lens ring back on , and thats it , you have moded a light to P60 . Easy right ?

Now my Romisen is XM-L , and has the new 2 mode + Junk KD SSC P7 driver [ Why cant they do Hi Med Lo ??? ] , and if you look carefully , you will see that the reflector to bezel relationship means there is no bezel block ! Full output , and ............. 900L due to no blockage [ If only the driver didnt have a junk mode and had memory , this would be my No1 XM-L ]

The SAIK SA-8 is a little different , it has a reflector retaining ring , that holds the reflector and lens in place from the back of the head ..

So simply remove the ring , pull out the reflector , pop in a P60 module , put the retaining ring back gently , dont break the lens . and there you have it , it is that easy !

And lastly the EDI host , again the same as the SAIK SA-8 , it has a retaining ring to hold in the reflector + lens ..

Remove the ring , pull out the reflector , pop in a P60 module and viola ! another mod !

Now any host with a large enough head should be able to be moded to P60 if your looking for a easy upgrade , My SAIK is 3xAAA , and I am currently running it as such with a Solarforce 5 mode drop in , and it runs fine [ ok output is down as Im actually running DRY Cells - cheap nasty ones at that ]

But if your 3xAAA has an external tailcap , then you have the option of 22600 , [ internally threaded bodies may not - Solarforce L2i for example ]

So there you have it , its as easy as can be ...

And if your like me , you may have a few P60 modules in the spare parts box doing nothing , and should you ever be tempted by a cheap light , only to find the output is not even close to advertised specs , you could maybe pop in a P60 module . Maybe ?

Nice job as always old. You also have a very good lookin' and huge collection of P60 flashlights.

What drop-in is in the silver L2 (?) on the right with two extensions? I like the switch on that bad boy too.

I am a big romisen fan. I am so off to find a RL B7!

Hi, I am REALLY sorry to bump an old thread, but I came across this thread while searching Google for a way to upgrade my old Romisen RL-B7 and noticed that you have done just that with your light. Is there any way you can tell me which parts you used to upgrade yours? I am not familiar with what goes along with "p60" upgrades and while i'm obsessed with lights, i haven't ever gotten much into the modding side (though i am wanting to!).

Thank you in advance :)

P60 is the name given by Surefire for the self contained pill / reflector assembly containing

Reflector - pill [ pill has LED and DRIVER ]

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/cree-r2-wc-3-mode-0-100-led-drop-in-module-for-wf-502b-and-flashlights-alike-3-6v-8-4v-17593 Here is a ramping P60 drop in assembly ...

You can source the drop ins from , Kaidomain / Manafont / Dealextreme just to name a few ..

Also you can source the parts to build your own ...

LED needs to be on a 16mm base or smaller

Driver needs to be 17mm round ...

Again for parts , Dealextreme or Kaidomain

To mod the RL-B7 , you just need a P60 assembly of choice ..

Pull out the old pill and reflector ... and replace with the p60 assembly , from the top [ lens retaining ring ]

If memory serves , there is a reflector retaining ring , which you can possibly use to adjust to get the p60 pill sitting correctly ...

Thank you so much for the reply! So, after browsing DX last night I found these 2 drop ins and they both seem pretty good

Would these work as "p60" drop ins for my Romisen? If possible I would love for this light to be a little thrower, it uses an 18650 battery, as i'm sure you know since you own one. Are all P60 drop in's the same size? Or do they have to be modified to fit? Thank you for helping me learn! :)

Generally the XR-E throws better than the XP-G ...

But you will most likely find the XP-G the more useful ...

Yes - if its P60 , there generally in the same ball park - P60 being sort of a specification .

No , should just drop right in ...

My RL B7 , has been XR-E P4 - R2 - Diamond Dragon , Luxeon K2 TFFC , SSC P4 and P7 , XP-G R5 , and recently it has become XM-L

The RL-B7 was my first real LED flashlight , and had I been a modder , could have been also the last one , its a great little host .

And if I had been more frugal , I could simply have updated it as better emitters became available .

Ok, one last question! Are there any good US dealers for drop ins? Id rather not wait 3 weeks to receive whichever one I decide on

Thank you so much for all your help!

Nice collection, congrats.

Ok, I got the P60 drop in today :D. Ordered this one CREE XM-LT6 5-Mode 6700K 450-Lumen from DX's US warehouse and it only took 3 days to arrive at my house, across the country, which is pretty cool. Drop in fit great after i removed the spring around the bottom of it and so far it's working great. I do wish there weren't 5 modes because i will never use them but oh well, can't have everything.

I did have a question about heat though. The drop in does not sit against the side of the light, so i'm curious if I need to do anything to transfer the heat of the light to the body. The drop in does seam to get very hot, as i can feel the heat coming from the lens when it's on. I noticed in the picture of your Romisen that you have something around the reflector, i assume to help with the heat?

Wrap it in Alfoil , a nice tight wrap , might take a few goes to get it right , as there is a lot of space to fill ...
