Mod an older River Rock light?

About 6 years ago I bought a River Rock light (pictured below behind a Solarforce for comparison) that is still one of my favorite form-factor lights. Hefty, solid, smaller than a Maglite but bigger than a P60 style. I would love to mod this light. It has a convex lens that throws a very blue but very defined beam, almost like a spotlight, but it is quite dim and does not throw far.

I emailed River Rock and they said : "We do not have an upgrade kit for our lights. Typically, the head is attached with Loctite so it cannot be removed. I have seen a few of our other lights where a user replaced the LED with a new one but they knew how to match the LED power correctly and were able to solder it in place without damaging the circuit board. Not an easy modification.

I tried to get the head off the body in a vice, but only succeeded in scoring the knurling on it. Anyone who has ever messed with one of these, I would appreciate your help!

Bill

Remove as much as possible then boil the head. See here for how it goes.

The industrial strength swearing is obligatory. If you don't do that bit, it won't work....

:)

At work, i sometimes use a heat gun to disassemble parts that are put together with Loctite. Be carefull not to burn your fingers, because the Loctite has to be very hot, and aluminium is a very good heat conductor...

On the bigger parts i use a blowtorch (oxigen + acetylene) instead of the heat gun, but i don't think that will be fine for the anodising on the flashlight. (It can also melt the aluminium of the flashlight in a few minutes...)

Very, very important information:

While working, you need to have your tougue on the left side of your mouth and not on the right side.

Well after leaving it in the freezer all night, I finally got the head off.

The emitter is in the body just above a traditional side-switch. Not sure how to get that out or what I would replace it with.

Almost a shame there aren't more high-Lumens 2"C" cell lights, I like the size and heft of this light.
