Review: SolarForce T2

I haven’t seen a review on this light yet, and had been wanting one since they announced it a few months ago. Ordered it last week and it arrived yesterday :). Figured i’d share some of my opinions on it and give you all some pictures!! I also ordered one of the new SF battery cases, there are some pics of that also.

^Real hinges instead of a plastic folding hinge, this thing is built well and i’m happy with it

Square thread, best pic i could get with my aging DSLR

^ Great knurling as usual

^ Group shot with a few of my other SF lights

I am really impressed with this light. The size is perfect for pocket carry and the clip works well for me. Light has a great fit and finish, i noticed no flaws on mine. 3 modes, head tightened all the way is high, loosen is med and then tap the clicky for low. Modes are spaced very well, and i am EXTREMELY happy they didn’t put a strobe on this light.

If you notice in the pics, there is no way to remove the “tail cap.” Not sure if this is a bad thing, but i can’t take any readings with my multimeter because of this, lol. Also, i wonder how you change out the clicky…but it doesn’t worry me.

The head of the light is smooth and can make it difficult to twist between modes, i wish they would have added a knurled ring or something for grip.

This is a great light for the money, and i am really impressed as usual. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a AA light. Hope this helps anyone who was on the fence!

Any questions, just ask and i’ll do my best to answer!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Personally I think they should have made only the bezel stainless, but overall this light is very appealing. I also like the fact that it isn't glued together.

I can picture lots of folks doing an instant emitter swap to neutral white XM-L2

That Solarforce battery case is really nice.

So last night, i was using this light for awhile when i was doing some wiring in my car. After a few minutes on the medium setting, the light started to buzz/crackle/hum…it didn’t do this on high or low, just medium…

Should i be worried?? Never had a light make noises, lol…

Sounds like some PWM whine maybe...it's usually present on medium.

Thanks for the reply. Is it a normal thing? Any way to prevent it?

Thanks a lot for the review! Sticky’d.

Thanks for this review!
I’ve been using a 2AA maglite with the terralux drop-in as my EDC for most of the past year. (It replaced a really cool 1XAA Balder that kept turning on in my pocket and burning a hole in my leg.) But I recently began riding a bike to work and needed something with 3 modes.
This light is perfect! I’ve been using it for almost a month now. Full on, it’s bright enough to use in traffic. And the “moonlight” mode, which is actually still fairly bright, works well on the wooded bike trail part of my commute. I don’t blind the joggers or myself in the darkness around me, but I still have enough throw to see what’s down the trail.
And it’s the same size as my maglite, so all-day pocket space stayed the same, as well as my batteries (Eneloops, of course). I also have found that I use the momentary on quite a bit.

And it looks more like a light saber than my maglite (says my 7-yr old).

What a deal for $25! It took 3 weeks to get here, but it’s just in time for the season change. I’m thinking I’ll buy a round of these for the B-in-laws for Christmas.

Again, Civic - thanks for the review.

Oh - and this is my first post. I had to join up so I could say thanks. LOVE THIS FORUM!

08CivicSi - Thanks for the review.
“If you notice in the pics, there is no way to remove the “tail cap””

These look like a way of getting into the tailcap. Sorry about borrowing your photo, I haven’t got a T1 to have a try but a pair of round ended pliers might fit in the scalloped shapes. If the rubber is squashy enough maybe a drill chuck like the Enlan pivot screw?

“Square thread, best pic i could get with my aging DSLR” it wouldn’t be a Canon would it? my 10MP EOS400D and EOS40D both give 533 px tall when reduced to 800px wide.
Good pix anyway.

This is great for doubling as a kubaton. Also you can order a sheath for it from Solarforce. Hope they offer a deal on it soon, thanks, Ed

T2 is on deal now, so I lift this thread also.

22.99USD

edit: Oooppps, was it Only 25USD before? :expressionless:

Sorry for the delay, thanks for that, Ed

My father needed an 2*AA and I thought that the T2 would make a good contestant. He ended up choosing the Nitecore MT2A, but I think I’ll get the T2 and/or the Z2 as well. Not a huge fan of the UI though. Great review, thanks for sharing!!

Terrific light for the price, I think the UI is brilliant.

Question: given the conservative drive level, would it be safe to replace the XM-L with an XP-G or a Nichia 219?

Should be no probs at all.
